Economics of Specialty Corn Production in Missouri
Joe Parcell and Ray Massey, Extension Economists, and
Bethany Mattingly, Undergraduate Research Assistant
Overview of U.S. Specialty Corn Production The grain/oilseed industry is undergoing change. These changes are driven by more discriminating consumers and by competitive processors. Advances in plant genetics and processing technologies work together to produce and process grains and oilseeds that have specific food-, feed-, and industrial-use properties. While the current market for specialty food-, feed-, and industrial-use grain and oilseed products is relatively small, interest in growing these crops is increasing. Processors who want specialty crops offer incentives, in the form of premiums, to producers to grow them. Missouri producers have shown particular interest in growing value-enhanced corn varieties. The map below indicates the primary growing regions in the United States for five types of value-enhanced corn varieties. North and extreme southeast Missouri are included in these regions. Production Economics and Farm Management
Teaching
Production economics and farm management is a field of science trying to point out those economical principles, according to which a farm or rural enterprise should be led to achieve the desired economical result. The Major can be divided into accounting, management, production economics and appraisal. Teaching is concerned on basics of management, production and cost theory, production planning, organization and administration, and methods used in performing and researching these activities. Understanding principal concepts used to measure economical success, like profitability of enterprises and factors affecting it are a vital part of studying. A wide range of teaching methods is used. These comprise cooperative learning, lectures with demonstartions and group works. Learning environment in most lectures and group works is constructed so, that students and teachers are in active interaction with each other. Recommended complementary studies for students in this major are marketing, food economics, agricultural policy and microeconomics in national economics. Graduates of Production economics and farm management have found their employment in the fields of teaching, research, administration and extension services. Many of them also work widely in private companies and as independent entrepreneurs at home country and abroad.

Production Economics and Farm Management
Research
The research object of Production economics and farm management is a farm enterprise. Basic economic concepts of enterprises - profitability, liquidity and solidity together with the factors affecting them are under thorough examination. The research in this discipline can be characterized as applied research. Typical for this kind of research is that it is practical and problem oriented. It attempts to find and describe solutions and propositions to solve managerial problems. Finland is the northernmost country with considerable level of agricultural production. Production conditions in Finland are totally different compared to conditions in the main production areas of the European Union. This generates great challenges to research work performed in the field of Production economics and farm management. Research results achieved in foreign countries can seldom be applied to Finnish farm enterprises as such, which leads to abundant national requirements to research in this field. High quality of the research work performed in production economics and farm management is secured by integrating to other domestic, nordic and international research projects.
