Farm management research for small farmer development manual focuses on research methods appropriate for small farm analysis and its orientation to determining the needs of small farmer development. Related materials are available which describe the bridge between farm management and systems approaches such as Farming Systems and Farm Management for Asia: A Systems Approach . The purpose is to provide Ministry of Agriculture personnel and field staff of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society with materials on the basic principles and tools of farm management economics. It is expected that with this exposure to farm management economics, they will be better equipped to assist farmers in improving their farm management skills and competitiveness.

Farmers all over the world have to decide what to produce and how to go about it. In the tropics, small farmers have to work with a limited resource-base which usually does not lead itself to highly productive systems of consistent crop and animal production. Yet those people who live in developing tropical countries should be concerned that their farmers do produce more from the limited resources with which they have to work. The principles of farm management economics and the applications of the tools and techniques of farm management analysis and planning can help small farmers in tropics to produce ‘a bit more’ from their lot. For the benefit of teachers and students of agriculture, farm extension advisors and agricultural planners and managers, this book sets out the principles and practices of farm management economics on small holdings in the tropics in a clear, simple, useful and usable way.

A farm management economics approach to extension: Water use efficiency on irrigated dairy farms in northern Victoria and southern NSW Daniel Armstrong Department of Natural Resources and Environment
Kyabram Dairy Centre, 120 Cooma Rd, Kyabram VIC, 3620
Introduction
In northern Victoria and southern New South Wales (NSW), efficient use of irrigation water is important to the future of the dairy industry. Limitations on the availability of irrigation water, rising costs for this resource and environmental issues have resulted in increased pressure to improve water use efficiency (WUE). Water use efficiency is defined as the amount of milk produced from pasture per ML of water applied by irrigation plus effective rainfall. A large random survey of irrigated dairy farms in northern Victoria and southern NSW (Armstrong et al The WUE innovations that appear most likely to be adopted are those that result in increased farm profitability (Barr and Cary 1992) and improve labour efficiency (Kaine and Bewsell 2000). While improving farming practices may be necessary to maintain the regions natural resources, farmers need to balance this industry and community imperative with their individual objectives. Ensuring that adoption of information on sustainability issues makes individual farmers better off is an important aspect of being a responsible provider of information. Farm management decisions needs to consider the complex combination of human, production, environmental, economic, and financial components of the business (Makeham and Malcolm 1993). To understand the complexity of decision making processes, in-depth examination of a small number of businesses is generally more beneficial than surveying a large random sample (Sterns

In addition to administrative work as County Director, Laura's Farm Advisor work includes research, education, and outreach in farm management with a focus on record keeping, financial management, crop budgeting, and marketing. The overriding goal of her farm advisor work is to help strengthen farm businesses—especially those that are small, beginning and/or limited in resources. In order to achieve this, her efforts are focused in two areas:
  • Extending knowledge and information to improve business skills for the short-term; and Performing research and other program activities that will ultimately provide area farmers with research results, thus tools, to help them make informed choices and business decisions for the long-term.

6. REFERENCES
This appendix gives the authors' perspective on farm management in the context of management per se and of farm systems. It outlines, first, the concept of management; second, the distinctive features of agriculture that make farm management different from management in other fields, particularly industrial management; third and fourth, the major characteristics of farm management theory and of its practice; and, fifth, how government may help to make the management of small resource-poor farms more effective. The presentation is conceptual rather than empirical and its orientation is to small farms that are inevitably becoming less subsistence and more commercially oriented as development occurs.
1. THE CONCEPT OF MANAGEMENT
1.1 History of Management Thought
1.2 Definition of Management

1.3 Major Features of Management

1.4 Definition of Farm Management
Management is nothing new. It is something we do every time we choose between alternatives as we attempt to make the most of our lives. Women and men have been necessarily acting as managers ever since the origin of Homo sapiens.

FARM MANAGEMENT IS OUR BUSINESS
Farm Management Group. The Farm Management group is part of Wageningen University and Research Centre, Department of Social Sciences . We focus on both research and education in the field of economic and management problems at farm level. The group comprises about 40 people from the Netherlands and other countries. About half are permanent and temporary staff and the other half are PhD researchers. In addition there is a continuous stream of students and visiting researchers. Members of the Business Economics publish regularly in scientific journals, and they score high in the Dutch academic ranking lists. Farm Management focuses on the decision choices facing a farmer, given available resources and goals pursued. Farm management and decision making are subjects that complement activities in other groups of the Social Sciences Department of Wageningen UR. The Farm Management Group also has close relations with the Plant and Animal expertise groups in both research and education, as well as various faculties outside Wageningen UR. The Farm Management Group is well integrated into the corporate structure of Wageningen UR and not only provides professional education and research on the subject, but is also ideally positioned to make optimal use of technical expertise available.

http://agebb.missouri.edu/mgt/bull1b.htm
Swine Economics Report
Ron Plain
June 7, 2004
Hog slaughter continues at record levels. During January to May 2004, commercial hog slaughter in the U.S. totaled 41.95 million head, nearly 400 thousand more than in the first 5 months of 1999 and 288,000 more than in January-May 1980, the previous record holder for the start of a year. Prior to this year, daily hog slaughter had never exceeded 390,000 during the period between January and August. (At least not according to my records.) Thus far in 2004, we've had 6 days in February, one day in March, 4 days in April and 2 days in June with slaughter above 390,000. This huge slaughter was not unexpected. The market hog inventory in USDA's last quarterly hog report only slightly underestimated the actual slaughter during the last 14 weeks, and 75% of that miss was due to an increased number of slaughter hogs being imported from Canada. The record for annual hog slaughter is 101.554 million head in 1999. It looks like 2004 will break that record by nearly 2 million head. Records are made to be broken and with more people to feed, one can't be too surprised by what's happening with hog numbers. What is surprising is the strong prices that have accompanied this record kill. During the first five months of the year, barrow and gilt prices have averaged nearly $47.00/cwt pf live weight, 27% more than a year ago and the highest for any January-May since 1997. It looks like this week's slaughter will exceed 1.9 million for the first time ever during June, and we had some $60 hogs today at Sioux Falls.
