Sounds and Pictures in Words: Images in Literature for Young Adults
Connie S. Zitlow
Louise Rosenblatt 1978, 32 Literature is one of the arts, and reading literature is an artistic, or aesthetic, experience that has something in common with such other aesthetic experiences as listening to music, watching dance, or looking at paintings. ( Bruce E. Miller 1980, 3 Great stories give us metaphors that flash upon the mind the way lightning flashes upon the earth, illumination for an instant an entire landscape that had been hidden. ( Paula Fox, quoted in Zitlow, 1997, 413-414 Students can learn a great deal from experiences with literature that has powerful imagery, works written artfully by an author who is willing to test the boundaries of the genre, works that require the same type of thoughtful contemplation and effort one uses when viewing a piece of visual art. Why then should teachers ignore the imagery in a body of literature that is available to a generation of students who view and listen everyday? An important way we as people think and learn is by using images, such as visual connections and sound associations. The use of images, or imagery, is a primary underlying structure in language, media, and mind. It is a basic element in communicating and creating, an integral part of thinking, speaking, listening, reading, and writing. "Language and images are inextricably linked in how we generate them, how we make meaning from them, how we use them, and how we remember them" (

SACRÉ BLEU! Shooting our way through France, Switzerland, and Morocco by Fred Muchnik
of Studio Productions International I have spent several months putting this project together; interfacing with a Paris-based line producer (the talented Helene Levy), working with the Boston-based executive producer (the savvy Jonathan Stark), and our Betacam videographer (the always merry and bright Dillard Morrison). During the first half of our journey we will be accompanied by the ever-bubbly Cherie Mitschke, one of our language experts. During the second half Cherie will be replaced by the serio-comic, highly dependable and self-deprecating Tom Pauken. This is going to be fun. The next morning is Rosh Hashanah and, after paying my respects, I spend fifty dollars and enjoy a para-glide over the lower Alps, (see photo; note the Sony dvx-1000), which means jumping off a cliff (attached to a professional para-glider, of course) with a parachute one can steer. This fabled city sits on a rock surrounded by water. Its cathedral tower points straight up into the sky starkly defining the town in contrast to the peaceful water that surrounds it. The Mont is famous for its high and low tides; dramatic shifts in the surrounding water level that, in the past, have left many a person and/or cow stranded or drowned. Dillard sets up his Betacam along the shore one morning before dawn and awaits the incoming tide. As day breaks, water begins rushing in and he tapes the definitive Mont Saint Michel shot, complete with red gradated filter to lend the image a touch of class. Like the cows of yesteryear, Dillard just barely makes it out of their without getting soaked.

Introducing: The Pumpkin Quintet of Katashina.

Naturally, born and grew up here in Katashina.
From left to right: piano, guitar, drums, tenor sax, and bass. The story about them dates back to October last year. I found some strange-looking pumpkins at a farmer's store by the road. I liked them and put them on the table, until April this year when they rotted. I threw them away to backyard and forgot. In August, they revived and appeared in front of me. New, strange-looking, beautiful pumpkins. September 27, 1998-2001 Caution: An Omnidirectional Solo Fighter. Imagine you are out for a walk. You see a big chestnut tree. At its root you will see a bunch of chestnuts. Now, what are you going to do with this? Chestnut bur hurts you. But you can't keep yourself from collecting nuts. Big ones are sweet, you know well. Chestnut bur can be observed as art.

With An Oink-Oink Here And A Bow-Wow There.....
A Review of AlphaBonk Farm
Rich Cunningham During World War II ( or maybe after, this was all before my time), there was a popular song called "How They Gonna Keep Them Down On The Farm (After They've Seen Paree?"). Well, it this game had existed then, it may have helped solve that problem. And it would definitely have helped their children learn their ABC's. AlphaBonk Farm, at first glance, seems to be just another game, one that teaches children the alphabet, and tosses in a few games and hokey graphics to entertain the young ones. But, after installing and playing this game, uh, testing this game, it has a lot of subtle nooks and crannies that make it an enjoyable and educational program for young ones to learn on. From the greeting by Friendly Farmer Alphred A. Bonk, you meet a cast of characters that act as guides and mentors to the young player. These include Bunji the Frog, Velma the Swine, and Clyde the Parrot. There are 6 major areas to be explored in the game and these are: Poke 'n' Prod, Down Home Picture Tour, Rhyme Time, Seek 'n' Find, Farmer Bonk Stories, and Fun Farm Facts. There are 26 letters in the alphabet (see, I did play the game) and each letter has 5 activities associated with it. This leads to an almost infinite variety of games and challenges as well as continuous discovery opportunities for even the most advanced player. An example of one of the activities can describe best how the game flows. In Poke 'n' Prod, children click on Bunji the Frog and he gives them things to work with. The player then moves these items around and makes them interact with each other. For example, the letter "E", for egg, the children can put them in an incubator, fry them in a pan, or put them in some dye. Like Newton's Law of Gravity, each action has a reaction, and the variety of the interactions is almost infinite (and sometimes very funny; try dying an egg and putting it in the incubator).

To say of it "Here is a magnificent novel" is rather like gazing into the Grand Canyon and remarking, "Well, well, well; quite a slice." Doubtless you have heard that this book is not pleasant. Neither is the Atlantic Ocean. -Dorothy Parker O ne of the main characteristics of experimental films is that they tend to make hash of the terms we use to speak about narrative features, and James Benning's haunting, beautiful, and awesome Deseret (1995)-his eighth feature- length film-performs this valuable function from the outset. To say that Deseret is "directed" and "written" by Benning requires some bending of the categories. He "directed" it insofar as he conceived the project, filmed the images, recorded the s ound, and edited the sound and images; he "wrote" it insofar as he compiled and edited the texts that are read offscreen by Fred Gardner, though he didn't write them. In a Hollywood film the directorial tasks described above would be carried out by a prod ucer, cinematographer, sound recordist, editor, and sound editor; it's anybody's guess what the compiler and editor of the text would be called (researcher? script editor? production assistant?).

Great Toy
Our daughter loves the little people toys! Especially the Farm! We started buying little people for her on her first birthday and she still plays with them now that she is over 3. This is a great gender neutral toy for children to enjoy! I even bought this for our nephew who lives 2 states away. We were not certain what kinds of toys he would play with and what kinds of toys he already had. It ended up being a good gamble. He really enjoyed this toy and now he has many more pieces his parent bought for him since they found out he enjoyed this so well.

Great for language development
I am a speech pathologist working with birth to 5 yrs old. This toy is a favorite with all of my clients and has served years of duty, being transported from car to home to car to classroom almost every day. I bought it several years ago though and the sounds worked only for a few months, even when i changed the batteries... not sure exactly what happened, but I thought Fisher Price would have been slightly more durable mechanically. I am not heart broken tho because the songs were a little too much for me- they kept goign off during transport. Other than that, I love it and the kids love waking the farmer up and having the farmer kick the dirty animals out of his bed: "Get out of my bed you muddy pig!"

This story has a great story line to focus on animal sounds. It is a lot of fun for children to mimic animal sounds. This is great because being able to see an animal or its image and recognize or make the sound is a skill the children will need to see letters and associate them with sounds: a pre-reading skill.
Visit Totcity.com and have fun with their great Animal Sound Game . Click on the right animal to identify the sound it makes. Click the screen again to see the next set of animals and sound.
Offline Activity - Animal Sounds:
To do an offline animal sound activity use coloring pages or color posters (links to images below) and distribute the images. The children can color, decorate and cut around images, add a Popsicle stick to make hand puppets. Use these to play the games suggested below. Make a presentation first of each animal on the board or flannel board and practice the animal sounds, then conduct one or both of these games.
