Mazda's Not-So-Fine Print
Mazda Motor of America of Irvine, California, will pay a total of $5.25 million for alleged violations of a Federal Trade Commission order and state orders related to lease advertising for its cars and trucks. Under an agreement reached in October, Mazda will pay $4.05 million in civil penalties for allegedly violating a February 1997 FTC order. It was the largest civil penalty ever obtained by the Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection. The 1997 order required Mazda to disclose important leasing terms clearly and conspicuously. The FTC found, however, that Mazda's television leasing ads continued making disclosures that were in small and unreadable print, offset by distracting images or sounds, or that appeared on the screen for too short a time. Mazda will also pay a total of $1.2 million in fines and costs to 24 states as part of the settlement. "This substantial penalty should not only deter future violations of the FTC's order by Mazda, but send a strong signal to everyone in the automobile industry manufacturers, dealers and advertising agencies that important leasing information cannot be buried in fine print," said Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Jodie Bernstein. "This information is vital to consumers who are thinking about leasing or purchasing a vehicle." The 1997 FTC order required Mazda's print and television lease ads to "clearly and conspicuously" inform consumers of important leasing terms such as the amount due at lease inception, and prohibited the company from highlighting only the most attractive lease terms such as low monthly payments.

It started with a phone call to FFVA in early February from a producer in New York. “We’re doing a series about immigration policy and we’d like to talk to a farmer about illegal workers,” said Lisa Slow, a field producer for Lou Dobbs Tonight, shown each weeknight on CNN.
CNN’s series, titled Broken Borders , looked at immigration in the wake of President Bush’s initiative on immigration policy, announced in January. The producer wanted to tell a story about why farms use illegal aliens.
CNN anchor Lou Dobbs asks unexpected follow-up questions following the taped report on illegal immigrants working on U.S. farms.

Publications The Archivist Projecting Images of the Nation
Projecting Images of the Nation (page 2) During the first two decades of the twentieth century, the Department acquired most of their images from professional photographers such as Horatio Nelson Topley; John Woodruff and R. Sallows. The Immigration Program obtained their lantern slides either by hiring photographers for special photographic tours, in which they were instructed to capture specific types of images of Canada's beauty spots and bounty, or by purchasing negatives directly from the photographers. The negatives ranged in price from $3 for Sallows' to $12-$20 for one created by Woodruff. Following the First World War, the Immigration Program required access to a larger variety and volume of images to satisfy their quickly expanding lecture program, As a result, they began to obtain most of their negatives and slides from the Department of the Interior's lantern slide library which was administered by the Natural Resources Intelligence Branch. Close examination of the images used by the Immigration Program provides further insight into the predominant messages and themes that were delivered to designated audiences. Some of the lectures that were given dealt with farming in Canada, historic sites, national parks and Canadian beauty spots. In response to shifting policies which removed some of the barriers restricting the entry of urban immigrants, lectures delivered following the First World War were expanded to include themes such as industrial development, modern appliances and tools, and town and city life within Canada. The deliberate positioning of information about Canada is one of the most compelling aspects of the photographs used for immigration purposes and presents an extremely rich resource for further probing.

" Using Oneself As Material ." This Website , just like its counterpart and inspiration in the physical world, is crammed full of objects, images, sounds, stories, ideas and experiments. The first version was constructed in early 1997 with lots of enthusiasm but not much accommodation for the long-term needs of expansion and maintenance.
The current version is comprised of two main sections: The Museum
is an archive of almost 40 years of work with special focus on the discovery of Flaws Theory. Question 2: How are you transmitting the images and sounds from Crane Cam onto the Web? What kind of mikes and equipment are you using? Answer: A gasoline-powered generator is run for up to eight hours a day, providing the electricity needed to run the operation by charging two deep-cycle marine batteries. This generator is run during the day when the cranes are not present, and is surrounded by bales of hay to help dampen the sound. The generator is on land about 30 yards from the island with the camera. The two are connected by an extension cord strung between steel poles. (Crane Cam engineer Mark Christmas contributed to this answer.)

Do the children in your care know that the egg they had for lunch came from a chicken, and the milk they drink at bedtime was from a cow - or do they think it came from Safeways? There are lots of farms in the countryside to explore and even small city farms that you can discover - and this year is a particular important year to visit one, as they need our support following the foot and mouth crisis. What better way is there to introduce children to the world around them than through personal experience? Do the children in your care know that the egg they had for lunch came from a chicken, and the milk they drink at bedtime was from a cow - or do they think it came from Safeways? There are lots of farms in the countryside to explore and even small city farms that you can discover - and this year is a particular important year to visit one, as they need our support in light of the foot and mouth crisis. A great way to introduce the farm and animal topic is by providing children with a range of typical farm animals to play with, help them drive the tractor around their pretend farm, feed the animals and move them around. Talking about the different noises and sounds that you might hear.
