Links Bird Collision Recorder WT-Bird The large-scale implementation of wind energy is hampered to a large extent by the unknown effects that wind turbines may have on the environment. The collision of birds with turbines is in that respect a point of great concern. In environmental impact studies, estimates are made of the number of birds killed. After the wind farm has been taken in operation, again investigations have to be carried out to verify if the estimations were right. Various methods for counting bird collisions in a wind farm are being used. All methods have in common that they are labour intensive, and thus expensive and time consuming. Usually the investigations end up with very few figures and large uncertainties. If reliable and cheaper methods become available for counting bird collisions, more insight will be gained in the actual size of the problem, especially in offshore applications. As part of its research on condition monitoring, ECN has developed a low cost, robust and reliable method for detecting bird collisions. Microphones detect the impact of a bird flying against the turbine, a video camera will record the event and store it on a hard disk. Periodically, operators and environmental researchers can remotely obtain the images and sounds of the recorded events and determine which type of bird has collided. The principle is sketched below.

download as pdf an interactive video installation I recently was the recipient of an award for the dissemination of this project. I'll be showing the piece soon at Propellar Gallery in Toronto. Check back for show details. Project Description A solitary, illuminated book seems to be suspended in space in a darkened room. Four, looped, audio sequences emanate from the darkness, fading in and out, surrounding the viewer. Projected onto the open book are two video sequences, one on either side of the page, approximately 4 by 6 inches each. The diptyched, video images fade in and out, revealing and then obscuring the handwritten text that is physically written onto the pages of the book. A computer, which controls both the sound and video projection components, is stored discreetly under the black, clothed table that holds the book. The images and sounds appear and then disappear again. The audio and the video are each on their own loop, therefore the piece is forever changing, constantly creating new juxtapositions. The experience reading the book is never the same, as the video both intellectually reflects and physically obscures the understanding of the handwritten story on the pages. The story is about my relationship with my grandmother at the time when she was moved off the island and into the nursing home, where she still resides. The story unfolds in multiple layers. The video sequences are composed of shots of her now-abandoned farm, the nursing home, and old family snapshots. The audio is taken from excerpts of conversations with my grandmother and ambient sounds of the nursing home. I went back to the coast of British Columbia, specifically to document her story, in December of 2002.
