Prof. Louis Grant, chairman of the University Hospital Board and Professor of Microbiology, UWI, speaking at the official opening of the School of Physiotherapy. By Dr. Rebecca Tortello
The saying "we likkle but we tallawah" can be applied to many aspects of Jamaican life, not the least of which is Jamaica's contribution to world science. This article, the first in a two-part series featuring Jamaican scientists, considers the work of Professor Louis Grant, microbiologist, one of those whose work had immense local and international impact.

DR. THE HON. THOMAS P. LECKY, PH.D., O.M., O. J., O.B.E. (1904-1994) By Dr. Rebecca Tortello
Thomas Lecky, was born on a small farm in Portland in 1904. The first Jamaican to receive a Ph.D. in agriculture, his work would revolutionize the Jamaican dairy industry and improve the lives of countless small farmers. Young T.P. received a merit scholarship to attend the Farm School at Hope Gardens in St. Andrew (now part of the College of Arts and Sciences, CASE, Portland). From an early age T.P. was closely attuned to the challenges of small farming having watched his father lose his banana crop as a result of hurricanes three years in a row. Aware too that many of his friends and family members in Portland suffered from an unbalanced diet, he became particularly interested in cattle, convinced that milk and beef could help satisfy protein needs that were not being met. Livestock also seemed a wiser bet than a focus on crops alone. After graduating, Lecky went to work for the government at Hope in 1925. He became closely involved with assessing the suitability of new breeds of cattle being introduced to Jamaica and testing their reaction to local conditions. Lecky learned that the cattle in Jamaica at that time were not well suited to life on hillsides where many small farmers had holdings. Hailing from a hilly region himself Lecky became one of Jamaica's earliest environmentalists, a strong advocate for conservation of hillsides. He believed that all small farmers should have cattle because besides producing milk, every year a young animal could be sold to help pay for school fees.

The PD-9 Region includes Culpeper, Madison, Orange, Fauquier, and Rappahannock Counties. Administrators ONLY CIVIL WAR HISTORY Cedar Mountain During Civil War A new threat to the Confederacy lurked in Northern Virginia in the summer of 1862. The Lincoln Administration turned to Major General John Pope. Pope forged an army out of several union commands embarrassed by Jackson in the Valley and christened his new fighting force the Army of Virginia. Vexed by Pope's move on Culpeper Courthouse, Robert E. Lee quickly dispatched Jackson to Gordonsville with the grave order: "I want Pope to be suppressed." Outnumbered by Pope's forces, Jackson looked for an opportunity to strike. Pope unwittingly divided his army along the Rapidan River. Jackson then advanced hoping to isolate a portion of Pope's army near Culpeper. Pressing forward on August 9, 1862, Jackson's troops encountered Union cavalry and artillery blocking the road near Cedar Run. Confederate Brigadier General Jubal A. Early hastily formed a line of infantry and artillery on the shoulder of Cedar (or Slaughter's) Mountain. Confederate artillery firing from the mountain as well as from a small wooded knoll known afterward as the Cedars dueled with Union artillery posted on the Mitchell Station Road.

The forums are held at the White House
The White House has cancelled a poetry forum over fears it would be taken over by ant-war protests. The discussion was to be hosted by US First Lady Laura Bush on the works of Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes and Walt Whitman. But some poets indicated they wanted to protest about proposed military action against Iraq during the meeting on 12 February. "While Mrs Bush respects the right of all Americans to express their opinions, she, too, has opinions and believes it would be inappropriate to turn a literary event into a political forum," Noelia Rodriguez, spokeswoman for Mrs Bush. The first lady has hosted a number of the literary events to honour American authors and their impact on society, often turning into lively debates. Laura Bush is a campaigner for educational standards Connecticut's poet laureate Marilyn Nelson said she had accepted an invitation from the White House.

90. Images Of Greatness
Fourth and fifth graders write about the lives and characters of twelve famous individuals.
http://www.kyrene.k12.az.us/schools/brisas/sunda/great/great.htm
History is sprinkled with the legacies of a few unique and courageous individuals: writers, artists, explorers, statesmen. We researched thirteen famous people in an attempt to prove the hypothesis "People who achieve enduring fame are those who dare to be different." We did discover these great achievers truly were different from many in the society of their times. When comparing their personality traits, we also noted many reoccurring characteristics such as courage, risk-taking, a passion for their work, and a strong determination.
So what contributes to a person's achievement of greatness? Look over our chart (it's quite large so scroll over to view it all) and draw your own conclusions! Then read our analyses of how these great individuals earned their enduring fame.
After you read our essays, test your knowledge of famous quotations made by these thirteen "Images of Greatness".
