E-Mail Revolutionary War Beginnings The American Revolutionary War was the outgrowth of the colonists' desire not to be taxed without the right to representation in the Parliament of England. Following the French and Indian War, England needed to recoup some of the cost of the war from the colonists. To the British it only seemed fair that the Colonies pay a share for their own defense. Britain resorted to the Stamp Act of 1765 as a means to raise money from the Colonies. This act resulted in outrage from the Colonies and led to rioting, rhetoric, and the formation of the Stamp Act Congress. These actions quickly led to the repeal of the Stamp Act; however, there were many new taxes levied to take its place. The Americans continued to object strongly to these new measures and formed organized political groups such as the Committee of Correspondence and the Sons of Liberty. "Taxation without representation is tyranny," quickly became the battle cry of the Colonies.

Let Us Now Praise Famous Men provides considerable insight into the historic events of 1930s America through its examination of Southern sharecroppers. In addition to illuminating concrete historical phenomena, the work illuminates fundamental attitude changes. Notably, James Agee and Walker Evans' method of handling their subject matter shows both a rejection of Victorian and Progressive values, and the adoption of a fundamentally different approach to addressing social issues. Unlike many who wrote before them, Agee and Evans did not criticize and berate the tenants' lifestyles. Rather, they respected the dignity of the families they profiled while sensitively presenting the hardships each family faced. Likewise, the author and photographer did not present the subject matter in the context of a perfectly ordered world that could be easily understood. Instead, Agee and Evans present a confusing world where judgments about dignity and the way humans should live are not easily made. The manner in which Let Us Now Praise Famous Men reflects attitude changes is made lucid by comparing it with earlier assessments of social issues. One work that can be compared to

This is a test of the ability to recall remote events from the past. The information you provide will be used to construct better methods to examine remote memories. Although the test consists of 100 items, the task is simple and you may enjoy trying to remember when these things happened. This year's Colonial Fair will host several special visitors. The guests will be some famous Virginians that you know: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, George Mason, James Madison, James Monroe and Patrick Henry. Your tasks are listed below.
Tasks:
You have two tasks to choose from with help from your teacher.
    1. Play the parts of a famous Virginian and Interviewer who will conduct an interview during the Colonial Fair. 2. Create a poster and brochure to advertise the interviews.
Process:
    TASK 1: Sixpairs of students will choose one of the famous Virginians. One of the members of the pair will play the part of the famous Virginian. The other will play the part of a TV reporter. The pairs will use the resources listed here to find information about the famous Virginian and write a list of questions and answers to be used in an interview to be conducted during the Colonial Fair. You will need to know the following information:

B y the 1930s money was scarce because of the depression, so people did what they could to make their lives happy. Movies were hot, parlor games and board games were popular. People gathered around radios to listen to the Yankees. Young people danced to the big bands. Franklin Roosevelt influenced Americans with his Fireside Chats. The golden age of the mystery novel continued as people escaped into books, reading writers like Agatha Christie, Dashielle Hammett, and Raymond Chandler.
