The Top Three Zombie Outbreaks in U.S. History
Like vampires, zombies are great opportunists. So it comes as no surprise that zombie outbreaks often happen in the wake of natural disasters. Combine disasters with warm climates and you truly have a recipe for a major outbreak, as the following stories prove. Key West, Florida, 1935
Key West, 1935: Zombie
bodies prepared for disposal
On Labor Day, September 2, 1935, a major hurricane bore down on the Florida Keys, a string of islands separating the Gulf of Mexico from the Atlantic Ocean. The hurricane, one of only two Category 5 storms ever recorded in the United States, made landfall at Key West, the most populous of the keys. As day turned to night, heavy rains and winds of over 150 miles an hour rolled over the island, destroying virtually everything standing. Amid the destruction, infected rats began roaming the island, and by morning, the first of the zombies appeared. Many islanders mistook the zombies for dazed hurricane survivors and the plague spread across the island like wildfire. To make matters worse, the roads and bridges connecting the keys to the mainland had been washed out by the storm. The islanders had no way to escape. Scores of people drowned when they chose to leap into the choppy surf rather than face the voracious zombies. Within days, FVZA troops from all over the south converged on Key West in a variety of sea craft. They established a beachhead on the south side of the island and went about the process of extermination. It took three weeks to secure the island. A total of 3500 people were infected and destroyed, an enormous number considering that there was a zombie vaccine available at this time.

Robert Lindneux's dramatic rendering of the Trail of Tears. Andrew Jackson said in response to the Supreme Courts ruling, "John Marshall has made his decision; now let him enforce it." Jackson once wrote, "There your white brothers will not trouble you, they will have no claims to the land, and you can live upon it, you and all your children, as long as the grass grows or the water runs, in peace and plenty." The Rape of the Native American People In mid-winter, deadliest of all seasons, the United States government seizes your home, and forces relocation. The Government, established on the principles of Equality, Justice, and Protection of Property, subjugates your family to removal- arbitrarily choosing strange, unfamiliar land. Skeptical such a travesty could occur? You shouldn't be. In 1838, President Martin Van Buren committed the horrific crime against Native Americans: The Trail of Tears, a journey which forced the Cherokees from their ancestral land. The disaster itself invokes empathy for the loss accrued by the Cherokee survivors, who lived through the torment of losing their home in the southern Appalachia's. Yet the incident represents the destructive nature of American Indian Policy. The attitude and policies of the Government in dealing with Native American's sully the image of a fair and just nation. The Trail of Tears started long before the heart breaking trek began, in 1803 the Louisiana Purchase signified the origin of the theories of a peaceful removal for the Native Americans beyond the Mississippi. However, serious consideration began in 1820 with the demand for more land. A boom in foreign and domestic markets for agricultural goods coupled with revolutionary inventions such as the cotton gin produced widespread use of the plantation system. The removal of indigenous populations stood in the way of progress. Georgia, determined to rid herself of Indians, complained to the United States to fulfill the commitment to removing Native Americans from the State (a pact signed in 1802 promised Georgia the U.S. Government would relocate the indigenous population).

The world's worst natural disasters When man meets nature in force, nature wins By David McCormick , January 13, 2000
For all our technology, humanity has yet to conquer the most powerful force on Earth - nature. Extreme weather and natural disasters continue to strike with little warning, wreaking havoc on the lives of millions around the globe. Here are some the most notable and deadly natural disasters humankind has ever seen.
Swirling and spiraling - the worst cyclones and hurricanes... Flooding in Bangladesh has killed more people than any other natural disaster One of the poorest and most densely populated nations in the world, Bangladesh is periodically pounded by vicious cyclones that sweep up the Bay of Bengal, unleashing terrible flooding and resulting in tremendous loss of life. In 1970, a cyclone and the resulting floods killed 500,000 people, making it the worst natural disaster of the 20th Century. Packing winds of up to 230 km/h, the cyclone slammed into the heavily populated coastal area, where several river deltas provide fertile land. The strong winds produce massive waves, which deluged entire villages. Millions of people were left homeless. "The Great Hurricane" that hit the Caribbean in October 1780 is the most deadly Western Hemisphere hurricane on record. It killed 22,000 people on the islands of Martinique, St. Eustatius, and Barbados.
