He stopped in Hamilton, Ontario, where he married Sarah McIntyre around 1854. The newlyweds moved to Cottreville Township, St. Clair County, Michigan. Their home still stands in what is now Marine City, Michigan, not far from Holy Cross Catholic Church. The Federal Census of 1860 lists Duncan's occupation as "ship builder." He worked for one of the thriving Great Lakes ship building companies, which employed thousands well into the 20th century.

The first impression Hoover Dam makes is with its size. How can it be so big? So remote? What did it take to build it? Why is it so important? When you look at its masonry, at its angles, at the quality of the workmanship, you notice that it is also a great work of art.
As you read the dedications and inscriptions around the dam you begin to understand why it is so beautifully made. It was a labor of love. On one of the dams towers it reads:

"Civilization is a stream with banks. The stream is sometimes filled with blood from people killing, stealing, shouting and doing the things historians usually record, while on the banks, unnoticed, people build homes, make love, raise children, sing songs, write poetry, and even whittle statues. The story of civilization is the story of what happened on the banks. Historians...ignore the banks for the river." Will Durant (1885-1981)
This website seeks to combine St. Louis' history with its "story of civilization".

Famous Navy Quotes: Who Said Them... and When
"...without a Respectable Navy, Alas America!" Captain John Paul Jones , 16 November 1778, in a letter to Robert Morris. " I have not yet begun to fight! " Captain John Paul Jones said this during the famous battle between Bonhomme Richard and Serapis on 23 September 1779. It seems that some of Jones's men cried for surrender, but not John Paul Jones! Captain Richard Pearson of Serapis asked Jones if he had surrendered. Jones uttered the immortal words: "I have not yet begun to fight!" So, at least, Lt. Richard Dale later recalled. "I wish to have no Connection with any Ship that does not Sail fast for I intend to go in harm's way." Captain John Paul Jones , 16 November 1778, in a letter to le Ray de Chaumont "Without a decisive naval force we can do nothing definitive, and with it, everything honorable and glorious." President George Washington , 15 November 1781, to Marquis de Lafayette.

    Pre-Revolution
Today's Army Rangers can trace their history throughout American history back to 1670. Captain Benjamin Church organized a company of troops and designated the Rangers. Church's Rangers fought with distinction during King Philip's War with the frontier Indians from 1670 to the war's end in 1675. During the French and Indian Wars of 1754 to 1763, nine companies of Rangers were organized under the command of Major Robert Rogers to fight for the British. Rogers was a brilliant and persuasive commander and published a set of 28 Standing Orders that emphasized the need for sound tactics and being prepared at all times. Rogers' standing orders are just as relevant today as they were in 1756.

    http://www.germantown.k12.il.us/html/disasters.html
Grade 7 Natural Disasters Project Quake, 1st Ld, URGENT St. Louis, MO December 18, 1998 - A massive earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale rocked America's midsection today, wreaking death and destruction from St. Louis to Memphis to Little Rock. Early estimates put the death toll at 1,200, but with many areas still unreachable by rescue teams, that figure is expected to rise. More than 4,500 have been injured, many of them seriously. The quake is the latest chapter in the tragic history of the New Madrid fault. But where previous New Madrid quakes struck while the region was sparsely populated in the early 1800's, today's hit a thriving multi-state region in the middle of the Christmas shopping rush. It will take months to assess the quake's true impact, but a disaster of staggering proportions is already taking shape. St. Louis, located 100 miles from the fault's northern end, has been hit the hardest. Damage to that city could exceed $4 billion. Lambert Field, the city's airport, has sustained extensive damage, shutting down a vital rescue site. But the impact of this quake will also be felt far beyond the New Madrid fault line. Most of the natural gaslines that crisscross the area have ruptured, making it likely that millions of people throught the eastern part of the country will shiver through the winter without heat. Portions of the nation's electricity supply also lie in ruins, imperiling power supplies to most of the eastern United States. Further details to follow...

    Fire Disasters:
    What Have We Learned?
    By Francis L. Brannigan, SPFE
    and Harry R. Carter, Ph.D.

Every once in awhile, we need to pause and reflect on who we are and what we stand for. As the American Fire Service pauses to celebrate an illustrious history dating back 350 years, let us reflect for a moment on some of the great lessons learned from fire. Some of our greatest progress has occurred just after someone's town was devastated or many lives were lost. This is not a recent phenomenon. The earliest recorded fire prevention efforts come from ancient Rome. It was surely noted after a major fire that something should have been done to prevent the disaster or at least, have somebody to protect the citizens. This may also be the earliest recorded uttering of the phrase, "How long has this thing been going on?" Rome continued to tinker with its fire forces. When the slaves who were serving as the firefighting force became unruly, the response was to form the equivalent of what we now term a fire department. Once again, this was a reaction to a problem. The pages of history are strewn with stories of great cities that were destroyed by fire:
