National Anthem: O Canada
Official Lyrics of O Canada!
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free! From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
The History of the National Anthem
Summary "O Canada" was proclaimed Canada's national anthem on July 1, 1980, 100 years after it was first sung on June 24, 1880. The music was composed by Calixa Lavallée, a well-known composer; French lyrics to accompany the music were written by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. The song gained steadily in popularity. Many English versions have appeared over the years. The version on which the official English lyrics are based was written in 1908 by Mr. Justice Robert Stanley Weir. The official English version includes changes recommended in 1968 by a Special Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Commons. The French lyrics remain unaltered.

HISTORY OF TECHNOLOGY As taught by
Prof. Tim Richardson
Toronto, Canada BIOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT The purpose of this assignment
is to help you understand how individual persons can discover / invent some "technological application of science" which, depending on the surrounding circumstances, can have a long-term effect on human life.
  • Sometimes an invention is special because if it did not take place, humans would continue to suffer some bad condition. Sometimes an invention is not really an invention of a new thing, but rather a "discovery" of a principle which, when understood, allows humans to do things which they could not previously understand.example: magnets. Sometimes an invention has strong social consequences which are beneficial eg. paper for communicating; and sometimes an invention or discovery has very negative consequences, eg. gunpowder used to propel projectiles

You task is to choose a person (or group of people) from history (any time period) and describe: 1. The main discovery / invention that they are most famous for
This must be something with clear technological implications, and not just pure science

Biographical Information
LIBRARY GUIDE
A biography is an account of the special and important events in a person's life. It should not be confused with the similar sounding term bibliography , which is a listing of books and articles on a topic. Biographies may be brief and cover only basic information about a person's life such as dates of birth and death, education and vocation. A biography may also be very detailed, and cover the cultural background, outstanding accomplishments, and historical significance of an individual. Biographical sources cover both living and deceased persons, notable persons in particular countries, persons in specific occupations, celebrities, and civil and government leaders. It is helpful when searching for biographical information to know:
  • The person's full name and correct spelling (for example: Smith, Smyth or Smythe) date of birth date of death (when applicable) nationality or country of residence occupation or profession
This guide will assist you in locating biographical information. It is organized in three sections:

Muir Biography Extracts ... Web Links A Brief Biography In the spring of 1868, a young man came to Yosemite and changed the world. Muir had just turned 30 that year. His first 11 years were spent in Dunbar, Scotland. The next 11 he spent in the backwoods of Wisconsin, working through the daylight hours, clearing the forest, holding a plow to a straight furrow behind a team of oxen, digging wells through hard bedrock, and taking an adult's part in subduing wild nature. Years later, in The Story of My Boyhood and Youth , he stressed the rigours of his childhood, but he seemed to feel that his strenuous years in Wisconsin prepared him well for his later wilderness ramblings. He also prepared throughout his childhood for his life as a naturalist by a close attention to the wonders of nature. Everything, it seemed, drew his eye and his mind, and all creatures drew his sympathy, whether the mice that ate the grain he had wrung from the earth by the sweat of his brow or the intelligent old ox Buck, who figured out how to open pumpkins to feast on the succulent inner flesh. As a teenager, he had no time for school and little opportunity for formal study. Yet his mind hungered for knowledge. When his father grudgingly gave permission for him to rise before the rest of the family to read, he took to rising at one in the morning. He wrote, "I had gained five hours, almost half a day! 'Five hours to myself!' I said. 'Five huge, solid hours!' I can hardly think of any other event of my life, any discovery I ever made that gave birth to joy so transportingly glorious as the possession of these five frosty hours."

Introduction Nobody knows for certain how much money Canadians spend on games of chance each year, but to be sure, socially sanctioned/legal forms of gambling in Canada have been estimated to be worth some $20 - $27 BILLION annually. Moreover, these figures will likely increase quite substantially in the very near future, given the trend towards increased availability of gambling venues throughout many parts of the country (such as the notorious VLT's: Video Lottery Terminals). Despite some rather impressive research and programmatic undertakings in this area of study to date, there is still much to be learned about the negative consequences associated with gambling behaviour. The need for new knowledge, and an efficient and appropriate translation of same into programs and services which will assist problem gamblers and their significant others has never been greater! The role of the Internet in this regard is really quite unique. Through the Net, new knowledge can be conveyed as a means of increasing societal consciousness as well as a mechanism for improved communication amongst researchers and programmers in the field. This is also an excellent way to assist and facilitate self-help groups with their pursuits. In this regard, the purpose of the

A researcher may reveal many profound things. As individuals, however, it is rare that any one researcher provides all the keys we need for health. It is more likely we will discover some aspect of the researcher's work that truly works for us rather than everything the researcher offers. For this reason, it is important we each use our own truth detector to decide what we want to accept and what we want to reject no matter how authoritative the researcher may seem. We introduce you now to some of these rare individuals, independent researchers, who have devoted time and talents to bring us keys to creating health.
