$29.95 CAN / $24.95 US Paper ISBN 0-9682702-2-0 About one million women served in the Soviet Armed Forces during WWII, yet their significant contribution to victory in that war has, so far, received insufficient attention. Publications in English have been limited to Soviet airwomen and are based on recent interviews with a handful of survivors. Unfortunately, most of these publications contain errors of fact and in some cases trivialize and sensationalize the subject. This collection includes one hundred brief biographies of WWII Soviet female air force, infantry and navy personnel, as well as women partisans and leaders of urban resistance, recipients of the Gold Star of Hero of the Soviet Union (HSU) and the Order of Glory I Class. As indicated in this collection, in the ground forces women distinguished themselves as medical personnel, political officers, tank crew members, machine gunners and snipers. Among decorated women snipers whose biographies appear in the book was Lyudmila Pavlichenko. Invited by Eleanor Roosevelt to tour the United States, she was the first Soviet citizen to be received at the White House and visited Canada, too; a Winchester rifle with an optical sight, now on display at the Central Museum of the Armed Forces in Moscow, was presented to her in Toronto. Also included in the book were biographies of four participants in the Russian Civil War (1918-1921), including the incomparable Rozaliya Zemlyachka, deputy Prime Minister during WWII, and Raisa Azarkh, senior medical officer, who met Dr. Normal Bethune, a famous Canadian (who died tragically in China in 1939) while they both served in Spain, during the Spanish Civil War. The text cited below is excerpted from the biography of Nina Sosnina, the 19-year-old leader of Malin underground in Ukraine:

Comment:  I am rather surprised to be the first person to review this book, since Donald Creighton's biography of John A. Macdonald is considered a classic in Canadian history. The book was first published in two parts, in 1952 and 1955, and both parts won the Governor General's award for these two years. At that time its topic was relatively new, since there had been only a few detailed biographies on Macdonald written in the half century before Creighton's (such as the one written by sir Joseph Pope, Macdonald's literary executor, who had at that time control over Macdonald's papers which were donated to the Public Archives of Canada in 1917) and even fewer books on the great politician have been written since Creighton's. But with all this new wealth of information now available to historians, Creighton was able to shed new light upon this famous Canadian statesman.

Ariel Sharon
Israel's new Prime Minister - biography
election of February 6, 2001: Ariel Sharon 62.5%, Ehud Barak 37.4%. Biographies of Ehud Barak, Shimon Peres and Yasser Arafat
Article added on February 13, 2001
New Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who had crashed his opponent from the Likud Party in February's election, has invited Ehud Barak to become Defense Minister and Shimon Peres to take over as Minister of Foreign Affairs. The idea of a government of national unity seems to be the best solution possible right now, with Peace Nobel Prize winner Peres as the best choice to help calming down a situation which is in danger to go definitively out of control. Although more than once in history, a hawk has turned into a dove, as the example of the assassinated Israeli Prime Minister Rabin has shown, it is doubtful that Sharon, the "Bulldozer", will be such a politician.
Negotiations with Palestinian leaders won't be easy because Sharon remains inflexible on key points. Regarding Jerusalem, the Prime Minister said that it has been "the capital of the Jewish people for the past 3,000 years" and that it is "the united and indivisible capital of Israel", "for all eternity". This is no basis for a future agreement and shows Sharon's bizarre understanding of history. Sharon also puts in doubt Camp David as a basis for peace negotiations.

Famous People in the 1881 Canadian Census
From visionary Fathers of Confederation and influential artists to free-willed journalists and dedicated suffragists, many of the personalities listed in the newly released online version of the 1881 Canadian Census make legendary figures come alive for today's Canadians. Many of the people whose names appear in the census represent the optimism, pluralism and expansionism of the then-infant nation. "This is the period in which Canada expands across the continent and consolidates that expansion," says Rod Macleod, professor of history at the University of Alberta. "It's an absolutely crucial period to the founding of Canada." Of particular note is the inclusion of various Fathers of Confederation, who met in conferences during the late 1860s and early 1870s that led to the creation of Canada. Most notable among them was John A. MacDonald, the nation's first prime minister. The Canadian Pacific Railway, which opened the West for settlement, was completed during his term of office in 1885. "This is also a time when we see a pattern of interreligious strife and the appearance of many political and social issues, including the rise of prohibition," said Macleod.

He was loved. He was hated. But no matter what your opinion of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, he changed the face of Canadian politics forever.
On Thursday September 28, 2000, Trudeau passed away at the age of 80. He suffered from Parkinsons disease but the official cause of death was prostate cancer. Trudeau was considered flamboyant and enthusiastic. Many people in Canada feel he was one of the best Prime Ministers the country has ever known. He served the country for 16 years longer than any other Prime Minister, with the exception of John A. MacDonald (Canadas first) and McKenzie King(during WWII.) bodyOffer(26706) Pierre Elliott Trudeau was born in Montreal, Quebec on October 18, 1919. His father died when he was still a teenager. His mother, who died in 1973, was bilingual and spoke both English and French in the presence of her children. Trudeau attended the London School of Economics, the Jesuit College Jean-de-Brebeuf, Harvard and McGill. He graduated with honors and was called to the bar of Quebec in 1944. He first appeared in Canadian society in 1949, when he supported the union during the famous Asbestos Strike. Years later he edited a book on the subject. From 1950 to 1951, Trudeau served as advisor to the Privy Counsel in Ottawa. He then returned to Quebec to fight for social change. He opposed Maurice Duplessis Union Nationale at this time.
