Sir John Alexander Macdonald Father of Canada Sir John A. Macdonald Sir John A. Macdonald. (January 10 or 11, 1815 - June 6, 1891) John A. Macdonald was Canada's first prime minister, and was knighted for his efforts in bringing about Confederation. His role in creating Canada, and the realization of his dream to build a transcontinental railway, have fixed his place as a nation-builder in Canadian history. John Alexander Macdonald was born at Glasgow, Scotland, the son of Hugh Macdonald and Helen Shaw. When he was five years old, the family moved to Kingston, Upper Canada. At the age of 15, he began legal studies in Kingston, and by the age of 19 opened his own law office there. He became known as a quick-witted and ingenious trial lawyer. Later, he was named solicitor for both of Kingston's banks. He was married twice, to Isabella Clark on September 1, 1843 (d. 1857), and to Susan Agnes Bernard on February 16, 1867. Macdonald was interested in public life from an early age, holding offices with a variety of boards and societies before becoming an alderman for Kingston in 1843. In 1844 he entered provincial politics as a Conservative member for Kingston, acting as receiver-general. After the defeat of the government early in 1848, Macdonald spent the time in opposition working for the interests of his party. He helped form the 1854 coalition with Upper Canadian reformers and French Canadians, creating the Liberal-Conservative Party (forerunner of today's Conservative Party.) With this coalition in power, Macdonald was appointed to the office of attorney-general. Later he acted as co-premier, first with

He and his wife had been married less than a year when they came to live in Rideau Cottage, on the grounds of Rideau Hall. Thirty-eight years after that first introduction, Georges and Pauline Vanier came to live at Rideau Hall as the newly appointed vice-regal couple. The appointment of Georges Vanier was announced at a Cabinet meeting in Halifax presided over by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The respect and affection which General Vanier inspired made him an appropriate successor to the popular Governor General Vincent Massey. Although Canada was experiencing turbulent times and General Vanier suffered from a heart condition, he reacted to the news of his appointment with the deep faith that was his constant companion. The most famous of the Canadian Fathers of Confederation, Sir John A. MacDonald was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He was a brilliant politician and in addition to successfully arguing for the independence of Canada, he supported the trans-continental railway system that united the country. John Alexander MacDonald came to Canada with his parents, Hugh and Helen (nee Shaw) at the age of five. In Scotland, Hugh MacDonald was a businessman whose ambition exceeded his abilities; the family came to Canada, where Helen's sister had relatives, hoping for a fresh start after a couple of Hugh's ventures failed. The family arrived in Kingston, Ontario in 1820. At this time, Kingston was one of the largest towns in Upper Canada. Later, John A. would be a leader of the community, but when his family first arrived, they were relatively poor. A Scottish commitment to education prompted the MacDonalds to send young John and his sisters to public school to receive what schooling he could. When he was fifteen, his parents took John out of formal schooling, and arranged for him to become a lawyer's apprentice. Despite his youth, the following few years brought a rather meteoric rise for John's career. He was articled to Kingston lawyer George Mackenzie, who saw enough promise in the young boy to entrust him with the management of a second firm in Napanee, two years later when John was seventeen.
