Mr Speaker, Mr Speaker of the Senate, Mr Prime Minister, Honourable Members of the Senate, Members of the House of Commons. It is a rare honour to be invited to address you today, here where the common bond between our two nations is symbolised. Of course ours isn't a relationship built only on shared history and sentiment. Canadian investment in Britain has grown by over 50 % in the last six years, making you the fourth largest investor in our country. Britain is the second largest investor in Canada. Last year alone, British companies committed more than C$13 billion here. The country Voltaire likened to "quelques arpents de neige" and Edward Gibbon to ancient Germany, is today for Britain a high-tech hub of the global economy. You are world leaders now in the new economy. But there are ties deeper than commerce alone can ever be.

Time to honour a national hero
Sir John A. built this nation and was its greatest prime minister, says former PM JOHN TURNER. He deserves the recognition Americans give their most notable leaders By John Turner Part 1 of 2: '... and above all let us be Canadians'
Sir John A. Macdonald VIDEO
from CTVNEWS.com Former prime minister John Turner on Sir John A. Macdonald (Jan. 12, 2002) Brian Mulroney marks the centennial anniversary of John A. Macdonald's death (June 6, 1991) W-FIVE: Prof. Donald Creighton, John A. Macdonald biographer (January 8, 1967) Printable versions of the essay Text .pdf Take the Sir John A. quiz Click here There are many who feel that Jan. 11 should be a national holiday, for on Jan. 11, in the year 1815, in Glasgow, Scotland, John Alexander Macdonald was born. In few other countries would a national hero be so neglected. In comparing Macdonald to Washington it is probably safe to say that Sir John played a greater role in forging the Canadian nation state than Washington did in determining the nature of his United States. In addition, Macdonald was the more interesting personality. The irony is that the interesting human aspects of Macdonald's personality have been allowed to obscure the true greatness of the man. Britain will never forget her Cromwell, her Pitt and her Disraeli. The hero whose name we add to our list of immortals, John Alexander Macdonald, had much of the force of an Oliver Cromwell, some of the compacting and conciliating tact of a William Pitt, the sagacity of a William Gladstone, and some of the shrewdness of a Benjamin Disraeli. To read the biography of John Alexander Macdonald is, essentially, to read a "new world biography."

August 10, 1935
Sworn In: November 2, 1935, Quebec City, Quebec.
Born: August 26, 1875, Perth, Scotland
Died: February 11, 1940
When Lord Tweedsmuir became Governor General, Canada was graced with a very literary vice-regal couple. Lord Tweedsmuir was a prolific author, writing two or three books a year – his suspense novel Thirty-Nine Steps later became famous when Alfred Hitchcock made it into a movie. Lady Tweedsmuir wrote many books and plays under the name of Susan Buchan. During his time as Governor General, Lord Tweedsmuir continued to write and his book Augustus , and his autobiography, Memory Hold-the-Door , were penned at Rideau Hall. While he pursued his own writing career, he also promoted the development of a distinctly Canadian culture. In 1936, encouraged by Lady Tweedsmuir, he created the Governor General's Literary Awards, which continue to be Canada's most prestigious recognition of literary merit. Lady Tweedsmuir was active in promoting literacy in Canada. She used Rideau Hall as a distribution centre for 40,000 books, which were sent out to readers in remote areas of the west. Her program was known as the "Lady Tweedsmuir Prairie Library Scheme". Together, Lord and Lady Tweedsmuir established the first proper library at Rideau Hall.

Over the next sixty years, he would set records for sealing, become involved in politics, and be considered by many as responsible for the worst sealing disaster in Newfoundland's history. In 1889, Kean became the captain of his own sealing ship, the Wolf. That year, on a trip lasting eleven days, he brought home 26,912 pelts. In 1910, while in charge of the Florizel, Kean brought in a load totalling 49,069 pelts, a record that would stand for twenty-three years. By 1934, his career total reached one million pelts and his many accolades included the Order of the British Empire.

BIBLIOGRAPHY
FAMOUS FREEMASONS T HE question must be asked, what purpose is served by compiling lists of famous men who also happen to have been freemasons?
Is it to demonstrate Freemasonry's beneficial and inspiring effect on men who have gone on to make a positive impact on their world, or is it a need on the part of contemporary freemasons to "ride on the coat-tails" of others?
Without a more careful review of lodge records, there is no way of knowing if these men ever attended a meeting after their initiation, much less if the teachings of Freemasonry played any role in their lives. Harry S Truman left a record of active masonic service, while the Duke of Wellington in his later years could not even remember having joined.
And then there are those such as Henry Ford who made a profound impact on our world but whose personal beliefs may not have reflected the best of human nature. Honesty dictates that we record their names, celebrate their contributions and recognize their failings.
A list of famous freemasons is not a list of perfect men but simply of men who have tried to make this a better world. The purpose for such a list should be the remembrance of those members of the Craft who in some fashion embodied

What makes a great prime minister of Canada? What makes a poor one? What are the key factors that determine success or failure? For that matter, what do we assess, or measure: - length of time in office? - deeds accomplished? - disasters avoided? - popularity with the public? - accolades from political peers? - respect from subsequent historians? Photo courtesy of Sony Classical. Have you ever wondered who Glenn Gould’s first piano teacher was, which prime minister regularly fell through the ice on the way to visit his sweetheart, or in which part of Canada Susanna Moodie set her famous novel Roughing It in the Bush ? You are not alone. The search for biographical information about Canadians can lead one on many serendipitous journeys through the wealth of information available on the World Wide Web. The information currently available is scattered, volatile and incomplete. Memorable Canadians: An Index of Biographies Contained on the National Library of Canada’s Web Site addresses these concerns. In May 1999, I was given the challenge of organizing the biographical information on the National Library of Canada’s Web site. While the goal of this project was to create a finding aid to the National Library’s existing material, there was also a need to know what other biographical sources could be made available to National Library (NL) clients seeking information about Canada’s people. The project involved researching Canadian and international information, investigating NL material, and creating a Web "sub" site. Webster’s New World Dictionary defines "biography" as the following:
