FHWA bicycle safety education resource center
At what age is it safe for children to begin to bicycle outside quiet neighborhood streets and ride on the street instead of the sidewalk?
Experts differ slightly on this issue. While there is no "magic age" that determines when it is safe to ride on arterial roads, children in the 9-12 year-old age group likely have developed the cognitive skills that allow them to bicycle on the road.
"Younger kids [under the age of 9 or 10] generally do not judge closing speeds well," explains Preston Tyree, education director of the Texas Bicycle Coalition in Austin.

Developmental stages Your ability to adapt and change will be tested in the coming years as your child starts the transition to adolescence and adulthood.
It's all about to change
Physical changes will affect your child in these years as pubic hair appears. Growth spurts can leave your child feeling gangly and awkward. Your daughter's breasts will begin to develop and she'll probably begin her periods sometime between 11 and 13. The arrival of spots can send your pre teen into a spin as she worries about being attractive to others. Strong sexual feelings may surface as your child approaches 13 and privacy will become increasingly important. Your son may be experiencing unwanted, embarrassing erections. ...sexual feelings may be appearing as your child approaches 13... Over these years your child will become much more interested in the opinions and friendship of others outside the home. Your views will start to be rejected. This is a necessary part of growing up as your child becomes his or her own person with ideas and values separate from the family.

What's New F1 Report: Talking to Adolescents 06:14 PM CDT on Wednesday, October 15, 2003 Mary Eddings/Online Producer When your pre-teen asks a sensitive or embarrassing question, does the cat get your tongue? With issues like school violence and AIDS facing young people today, keeping the lines of communication open is more important than ever. Even though teenager, Kristi Haines likes talking to her mom, she admits their conversations aren't always easy. "I give her an attitude most of the time, or just, like, ignore her," says Kristi. But her mom, Susan Haines has learned to stand by her daughter. "It's trial and tribulation. You're gonna make mistakes and you just have to be there," says Ms. Haines. According to Behavioral Health Clinician Andrea Budweiser, "It needs to start from the moment your child is born, talking and communicating with them in various forms so that when they do hit 13 or 14, when things are getting tough, you already have the open lines of communication. Initiate the Conversation - Experts say kids start to clam up by the time they're in middle school. Draw your child out by asking about her day, her friends and her activities.

The BabySitters Club
One of my youngest daughter's favorite book series is about a group of girls who have formed a special and unique club. It has increased in popularity over the past few years, and today's FamSite is about that club.
Called the Baby-sitters Club, this site is a great place to find out about the books and other material relating to this group of kids. Created by Ann Martin, they have become a staple (in my house at least) for the pre-teen and young teen set. Their adventures are told in book form, on CD-ROM, in video and on the Internet. Here you can meet them, write to the author, take a trivia quiz, get babysitting tips, and visit the fortuneteller.
So point your browser over to this site, and let your younger ones know about it. It is a great introduction to a great series of books.
