Issues and Answers: Fact Sheet on Sexuality Education
Sexuality education is the lifelong process of building a strong foundation for sexual health. Sexuality education takes place on a daily basis in homes, schools, faith-based institutions, and through the media. While this topic is often discussed, myths and misunderstandings persist. This fact sheet is designed to clarify this issue for parents, educators, health care professionals, policymakers, the media, and others so they can better understand the complexities and the importance of sexuality education. (Published in the SIECUS Report, Volume 29, Number 6 - August/September 2001) LEARNING ABOUT SEXUALITY Issue: What is sexuality education? Answer: Sexuality education is a lifelong process of acquiring information and forming attitudes, beliefs, and values. It encompasses sexual development, reproductive health, interpersonal relationships, affection, intimacy, body image, and gender roles. Sexuality education addresses the biological, sociocultural, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of sexuality from the cognitive domain (information); the affective domain (feelings, values, and attitudes); and the behavioral domain (communication and decision-making skills). Issue: Where do young people learn about sexuality?

A father’s greatest influence is not what he teaches his children, nor the pride he instills through great accomplishment or recognition. It is who he is, the presence he shares, the time spent with his kids, the love for his family he models, the values and priorities by which he lives, the commitment he makes to his God. Educate Your Children
With Stories About Work
By S ue S hellenbarger
From The Wall Street Journal Online For a nation up to our necks in work, we teach our kids precious little about our jobs. A continuing 10-year University of Chicago study of 250 young adults shows many teens don't understand the career paths open to them or the steps needed to travel the path of their choice. "Many middle-class parents think their children will get this knowledge from the school or college counselor," says Barbara Schneider, a University of Chicago sociology professor who has written a book about the study. In reality, parents need to work harder to convey what they know about the world of work, she says. A good way to fill kids' knowledge gap is through an age-old art: Telling stories about your work. Relating workaday dramas and the values that guide you on the job can teach kids a lot about what it takes to succeed. My first clue that my own family mirrors this national problem was when I overheard my son, then nine years old, tell a friend: "Mommy types for a living." To deepen his understanding of my work, I've since tried to engage him with stories about the adventures that drew me to it, such as how I once joined Muhammed Ali for a training run, and how I almost got arrested covering a farm-trade story in Colombia. Intrigued, my son, now 13, has begun asking how he can find and prepare for an equally interesting job for himself.

The survey found that "Eighty-nine percent of the 212 children's sites surveyed collect personally identifiable information directly from children; only 54 percent of the children's sites disclose their information collection practices." Finally, the FTC found that "fewer than 10 percent of the sites directed to children provide for some form of parental control over the collection of information from their kids." The FTC makes the following recommendations:
  • Don't give out your account password to anyone, even someone claiming to be from your online service. Your account can be hijacked, and you can find unexpected charges on your bill. People aren't always who they seem to be in Cyberspace. Be careful about giving out your credit card number. The same applies to your Social Security number, phone number and home address. child's growth. In a sense, you might compare adoptive parenting to an interfaith marriage. In each, the family confronts issues that other families don't. For example, as an adoptive parent, you will have to deal with matters besides the usual child-rearing ones. But that's nothing you can't overcome. Adoption has become a common, everyday phenomenon in our society. According to sociologist David Kirk, one out of every five people in this country has some kind of close connection to adoption. They either have a relative or good friend who was adopted, or they have adopted children who were adopted themselves. Although no accurate data exist, estimates are that there is a pool in this country of about eight hundred thousand adoptees under the age of eighteen. That's five to ten million people!

October 18, 2002 (AgapePress) - Intelligent design advocates are pleased with new changes in science standards for Ohio public schools. Earlier this week, the Ohio Board of Education recommended that students be taught the controversy surrounding the theory of evolution, and how to critically analyze the theory. The board also deleted the naturalistic definition of science that was previously in the draft guidelines, replacing it with a definition that allows for consideration of all logical explanations for phenomena in nature. The newly proposed definition reads: "Science is a systematic method of continuing investigation based on observation, hypothesis, testing, measurement, experimentation, and theory-building which leads to more adequate explanations of natural phenomena." It replaces a statement that said scientific knowledge is "limited to natural explanations for natural phenomena based on evidence from our senses or technological extensions." Jody Sjogren is with the group Science Excellence for All Ohioans (SEAO), which spearheaded public support for the new standards. She says her group believes the new definition is a "vast improvement" over the previous one, and one that is "very consistent with one of our major points in the 'Teach the Controversy' approach."

Project TEACH Instructors' Handbook

History of Project TEACH
Project TEACH stands for Treatment Education Activists Combatting HIV. TEACH was initiated in Philadelphia in 1995 by Julie Davids and Jeff Maskovsky, two members of ACT UP Philadelphia, working in collaboration with two local organizations, Philadelphia FIGHT and We the People Living with HIV/AIDS, Inc. Philadelphia FIGHT brought together people living with HIV and other AIDS activists, clinicians, and researchers to sustain a community research initiative and bring cutting-edge treatment and research information to the impacted communities of Philadelphia. Today it is the largest provider of HIV/AIDS medical care in the region. We the People, a groundbreaking PWA coalition primarily led by people of color, was a central force for effective community mobilization in struggles for housing, benefits and inclusion of people with HIV in decision-making processes. As treatment activists and organizations rooted in the day-to-day experiences of people with HIV in Philadelphia, the initiators of Project TEACH designed the program to move towards the stated goals of people most impacted by HIV in the mid-1990s current and former drug users, people of color, and women. They felt that crucial medical and HIV-specific information was not reaching their communities, and that they did not have meaningful participation in debates and decisions that impacted their communities. They felt that people were dying because they did not have information that would have saved or prolonged their lives.
