Powered by Ezine Director When Bullies Strike: An opportunity to teach your child strength and compassion By Dr. Kerrie Saunders There may be a time when your child encounters bullying behavior - when behavior goes beyond good-natured and occasional joking. The hurt can be in the form of verbal abuse (inflicted through words, such as name calling or taunting) or in the form of physical abuse (kicking, shoving, fighting, or taking property). Perhaps an even more damaging form occurs when there is an attempt to socially isolate a child. The behaviors usually occur repeatedly and/or over an extended period of time. Many adults will tend to focus their energy on the bully's inability to celebrate, or simply co-exist, with diversity. We wonder what s/he may have against a certain belief, faith, financial state, size, shape, color, or other trait of a child, and often go to great lengths to discipline and/or re-educate the bully. Psychologists tell us that bullying behavior is learned early on, and that these children typically grew up in a home where they were either a bully or a victim. There often is no mutual respect or sense of healthy boundaries for these individuals. That is why they truly need intervention, and the earlier, the better. That being said, I think we almost always miss the other opportunity before us as guiding adults. This is our chance to use an experiential 'life-lesson' while our child is still living safely with us at home. Children who are bullied for any reason, including being vegetarian, will experience similar thoughts and feelings: embarrassment, shame, fear, anger, and anxiety, a mix which usually tends to 'turn up the volume' on the natural desire to fit in and be liked.

Carol's Web Corner Frequently Asked Questions We don't homeschool. What can we do? How do I get started in homeschooling? What if I don't have the patience to homeschool? What about treating ADHD kids with medications? ... or tapes. I can't find it on your web page. Where do I get it? 1. We don't homeschool. What can we do? Of course you homeschool. You just call it helping with homework. All of the tactics and strategies that work for me when I teach my ADHD son at home can be applied in your home as well. The ways I suggest on the teaching tips page and in my book of incorporating motion and games into learning can be used with any subject you're attempting to teach the ADHD child. I know that you are trying to teach this child at the end of what is usually a VERY taxing day, when he or she is tired and less likely to be cooperative. But that makes teaching with motion all the more important. Do your best to find your child's predominant learning mode and incorporate it in every learning moment. For the child in the traditional classroom, you must appreciate how VERY difficult it is for our ADHD kids to keep control of their impulses in a room with many children. The noise level and the panorama of things in motion will elevate their level of excitability. The distractions are almost dizzying for them. They are almost destined for trouble. I've heard it said that a teacher trying to teach this child in such an environment is like trying to thread a sewing machine while it's running. Some school systems will really work with you on these issues and others will simply claim you're not disciplining enough.

    Changing priorities
The 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) transformed the agenda for international family planning. The consensus forged in Cairo emphasized individual human rights over national development and population goals, redefined family planning as one element of comprehensive reproductive health care services, viewed health within a broader social context, and acknowledged the importance of equity and empowerment for women. Since the Cairo meeting, family planning programs have set new goals, including:
    • offering client-centered care, improving the quality of care, integrating family planning with other reproductive health services, addressing social problems that affect women's health, such as domestic violence (see RHO's

Abstinence Spokesman: Adults Must Teach Teens To Value Marriage
By Allie Martin and Jenni Parker
October 15, 2003 (AgapePress) - Although many secular advocates of "comprehensive sex education" downplay the effectiveness of abstinence-only programs, one popular Christian youth speaker says the message of abstinence is being accepted in schools all over America.
Doug Herman International speaker and author Doug Herman , who has spent more than 20 years in youth and family work, has created an effort called the "Pure Revolution Project" in order to bring the message of sexual postponement until marriage to students, families, and communities. Currently Herman tours the country, speaking to more than 250,000 teens and adults yearly on issues of character development, sexual abstinence, and spiritual passion. His past experiences as a youth pastor and a former high school coach and substitute teacher have bolstered his effectiveness in the high school assembly programs he conducts throughout the U.S. every year. Herman says he is encouraged by the proclamation made by President George W. Bush to set aside October 12-18 as "

    Family Stress Clinic
Our philosophy has always been that psychosocial issues make up a very large and very interesting part of Family Medicine, and that failure to teach residents some useful skills for dealing with those is irresponsible. We do not expect family doctors to become therapists, but we want them to have a great deal of comfort identifying, dealing with and helping patients resolve those issues, either by brief treatment or referral. The Family Stress Clinic is a vital and well-integrated part of the Department. It is physically within the Family Practice Center Many of our clients come from the Family Practice Clinic, as well as other parts of the hospital (it is a well-known service around the hospital, and a popular referral by other Departments), but also from outside the University. We have maintained a sliding fee scale over the years, so we never have to exclude anyone on financial grounds. The only patients we turn down are those who a Family Doctor would not usually encounter or attempt to work with in a counseling relationship: the severely mentally ill, complex syndromes that require specialized care, etc. The philosophy of the FSC is that you will encounter these problems in your practice; now is the time to get good at understanding them and what can be done about them. The more comfortable you are with them, the more you can help them and the less they will trouble you. Our graduates frequently cite the FSC as a very memorable and important aspect of their training.

School Debate: Teach Gay Issues? By Jessica Kowal, Staff Writer Most people don't know it, but October is officially designated Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual Heritage and History Month in School District 2 in Manhattan. Acting in honor of former district resident Harvey Milk, the gay San Francisco supervisor who was assassinated in 1978, the district's school board has voted for seven years to mark homosexuals' contributions to American society. "We use our position as a pulpit to remind people of what we think is important," said Karen Feuer, the president of the school district that stretches from the Upper East Side to Chinatown, and from Columbus Circle south to Chelsea and Greenwich Village. This district's public pronouncement, even as a purely symbolic gesture, stands out as a rare example in the city schools of official and open support of homosexuality. Even in District 3, encompassing Manhattan's liberal Upper West Side and Harlem, the school board voted down a similar resolution two years ago. Schools throughout the boroughs, which educate the most ethnically diverse student population in the United States, celebrate and honor world cultures with events tied to the Chinese New Year, African-American History Month in February, or other festivals. But while student groups or individual teachers might discuss homosexuality, the Board of Education takes no position on teaching the lifestyle, which often is a matter of pride for gays and lesbians.

The Do's and Don'ts of Teaching Home Fire Safety by Jim Bowman Fires and burns are the second most common cause of death to children under 10, next to automobile crashes. That's why Battalion Chief Kevin Wiley, of the Oak Park, Ill., Fire Department, is a firm believer in teaching children about fire safety. A few years ago, a first-grader saved himself from a fire using the "stop, drop and roll" technique that Wiley taught him. The boy's shirt caught on fire as he sat near an open fireplace while on vacation. "He dropped and rolled on the cabin floor. It saved him," Wiley says. Fire Is Not Child's Play
Children can be fascinated by fire. From the first-grader who sits too close to an open fireplace to a youth who unintentionally starts a fire, all kids need to be taught fire safety tips. Keith Patterson, director of public education for the Deerfield-Bannockburn, Ill., Fire Department, identifies and counsels juvenile fire-setters. Fire-setting, he says, is "correctable behavior." He offers parents the following advice:
    • Do teach kids that fires and fire-making are for grown-ups. (Scouts are taught to make fires, but under supervision and with emphasis on safety procedures.)

    79. Providing Effective Schooling For Students At Risk
communities can help the schools teach and nurture (For more information on familycommunityinvolvement, see the Critical issues Supporting Ways
    http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/students/atrisk/at600.htm
Critical Issue: Providing Effective Schooling for Students at Risk
ISSUE: Students who are placed at risk due to poverty, race, ethnicity, language, or other factors are rarely well served by their schools (Hilliard, 1989; Letgers, McDill, & McPartland, 1993). They often attend schools where they are tracked into substandard courses and programs holding low expectations for learning (Oakes, 1985; Wheelock, 1992). If schools are to achieve the desired goal of success for all students, they must hold high expectations for all, especially this growing segment of learners. They must view these students as having strengths, not "deficits," and adopt programs and practices that help all students to achieve their true potential. OVERVIEW: The question of what it means to be "at risk" is controversial. When children do not succeed in school, educators and others disagree about who or what is to blame. Because learning is a process that takes place both inside and outside school, an ecological approach offers a working description of the term at risk . In this view, inadequacies in any arena of lifethe school, the home, or the communitycan contribute to academic failure when not compensated for in another arena.
