How to teach someone to love
Question
Pastor Joshua,
I am so fustrated with this situation, with my kids I usually can always find a way to break through to them, but I can find a way to help my own grandmother. The things she says destroys my family especially my dad. We all have prayed about this situation for years and it hasn't gotten better. I want to be able to teach her to let go of her bitterness and forgive but i don't know how. I'm so scared that she is not going to go to heaven. If you have any advice for me i would greatly appreciate it. Sincerely, Jamie Answer dear friend

About Family Enterprise? by Randel S. Carlock Ph.D., Opus Professor of Family Enterprise I have been teaching and working with family business programs in Europe to develop personal and institutional relationships, which will create new learning opportunities for St. Thomas families. I have had opportunities to conduct several workshops in Scotland, and I am beginning to develop relationships with Scottish families. Scotland seems very similar to Minnesota in that its people are northern European and well-educated. The economy is concentrated in agricultural, tourism and high-tech manufacturing. The rolling hills around Edinburgh would remind you of the southern half of Minnesota, and the highlands are similar to the area north of Duluth. Scotland is covered with deep, cold lochs (lakes) and crossed with streams and rivers. Comparing Scottish and U.S. family business practices is a valuable exercise for St. Thomas family enterprises to clarify what is important. There are several examples of family business practice that we may find interesting, and at times even amusing. The lesson we need to consider is not whether the Scottish practice is appropriate but, rather, what it reveals to us about how we operate our family businesses. I have described six family business issues from the Scottish perspective and developed a question for you to use for stimulating discussion at your next family meeting.

Development of a Patient Charting System to Teach Family Practice Residents Disease Management and Preventive Care
Authors: Dickerman, Joel L.; COLORADO SPRINGS OSTEOPATHIC FOUNDATION AND FAMILY MEDICINE CENTER Abstract: The patient chart can serve as an excellent teaching tool for family practice residents. Designing notes which 'prompt' residents to gather patient information vital to optimal care can teach residents the concepts of longitudinal care, particularly chronic disease management and preventive care. Specialized notes developed for specific diseases can teach residents how to manage that particular disease and teach residents how to address issues such as co-morbid diseases and reduction of risk factors for end-organ disease. Notes designed for specific patient populations can help residents address issues important to that population as a whole and reinforce concepts of managed care. Specialized patient information sheets can assist in providing feedback to residents regarding their care. These sheets summarize medical conditions, patient habits, and provide a means of tracking preventive screenings and interventions. Limitations: APPROVED FOR PUBLIC RELEASE Description: Summary rept. Wealth Family Issues Growing a Great Family
Brett Anderson
Essentially I believe this long-term process is driven by a desire on the part of the family to develop its own intellectual capital, with financial capital being a tool with which it is grown. There is also the desire to maintain money, but families whose only desire is to maintain money do not make long-term goals because they fail to appreciate the two more important capitals: human and intellectual. Historically most families have been unsuccessful at preserving what they have built.
That is true. The universal cultural proverb that says "shirtsleeves to shirt sleeves in three generations," is as old as writing itself. And when I say universal, I mean that it appears in every culture I have studied. Clogs to clogs, kimono to kimono, rice paddy to rice paddy, shirtsleeves to shirt sleeves. And it is a proverb that describes human behavior in terms of creating long-term families as failure.
The theory of the proverb is that the first generation starts off in a rice paddy, meaning two people with an affinity for one another come together and create a financial fortune. They usually do it without making significant changes to their values, customs or lifestyle. The second generation moves to the city, puts on beautiful clothes, joins the opera board, runs big organizations, and the fortune plateaus. The third generation, with no experience of work, consumes the financial fortune, and the fourth generation goes back in the rice paddy. This is the classic formulation of the shirtsleeves proverb, which is as true today as it has been throughout evolved human history.

Children Now : Leadership and Local Action for Children
In the emerging national debate on values in the media, there is one group we often forget to consult children. The purpose of this poll is to give voice to their concerns. Children tell us they think kids their age are influenced by the media, that television should help teach kids right from wrong, and that the shows they're seeing now don't reflect the kinds of issues they're facing in their own lives. Most kids had plenty of good things to say about the media as well, and both their concerns and their praise should be heeded by those in the entertainment industry whose work these kids are watching. I am a Professor of Psychology and the Director of the Center for Marital and Family Studies at the University of Denver. I received my B.A. from Rutgers University and my M.A. and PhD from Indiana University. Our research program on the prediction and prevention of relationship discord and divorce and the effects of destructive conflict and relationship distress prevention on mental health been funded for the past 20 years from the National Institute of Mental Health. I am proud to say that our research team over the years has written over 100 journal articles, books and papers based on our research. We have also been fortunate to have received funding from the National Science Foundation and the Hunt Foundation. We have been developing and evaluating a research based marriage education program, and have been using and testing the program in a number of settings in the U.S. and in other countries. For example we have fortunate to have been able to work with colleagues in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air force, the states of Oklahoma and Utah, and Norway, Germany, and Australia. In addition, I consult on a number of research grants and often give talks on the implications of our research for social policy for state and national governmental groups (e.g., National Institutes for Health, State of Nebraska). I also give workshops on the clinical implications of our research and on our marriage education program to professionals around the country and in other countries.

Some of the most important lessons being taught in middle and high schools are those being taught in family and consumer sciences (FACS) classes. Bearing little resemblance to the "stitch and stir" classes of years ago, today's FACS education focuses on helping students develop the ability to become independent, to assume family and community roles, and to succeed in the workplace. "Our society has changed, and rather than concentrating on how to bake a cake or sew a dress, we look at how to read a nutrition label on food packaging and how to be a smart shopper when buying clothing," says Wanda Fox, Ph.D., program coordinator of consumer and family sciences education. Family and consumer sciences is the name of the field formerly known as home economics. At Purdue, the teacher education program is called consumer and family sciences education in keeping with the name of the School. CFS education, an interdisciplinary program with the School of Education, offers two undergraduate majors: family and consumer sciences education and occupational family and consumer sciences education.
