Learn, Teach, and Share
If we care about saving forests, we can't afford to be apathetic in this crucial decade. If governments are sluggish or recalcitrant, citizens have to push them. A cricial mass of committed people can overwhelm and reverse official hostility, intransigence, or indifference witness the United States during the 1960s and 1970s. Civil rights, general opposition to the Vietnam War, women's rights, and environmental protection all spawned mass movements that changed the face of American life. Educate yourself
First of all, learn all you can about deforestation and about the condition of forests in your own region. Try to acquire an understanding of the difficult social and economic problems frontier forest nations face and of the kinds of help that should be offered them. Find out about your local forests how secure is the forest in your own neighborhood? Can it be bulldozed overnight for a building project? Do your local zoning regulations provide sufficient protection? Do they even consider the forest as a category of land use to be protected and managed in a special manner? Find out. If you answer these questions for yourself, you should end up with a list of topics and places that you think deserve your special attention, some of your time and commitment, and a bit of personal cash. The challenge is huge, and you will have to choose your shots carefully. Spread the word
Armed with this information and intelligence, get your family, friends and neighbors involved. Mealtime conversation about the plight of the forest, forest peoples, and plants and animals is a good place to begin. Also, encourage children to prepare their term papers and class projects about forest issues. If you are an extrovert, organize lectures, movies, slide shows, poster exhibits, and study groups in museums, libraries, places of worship, and shopping centers. Encourage your local schools to build conservation of forests and biological diversity into their science curricula.

How Parenting Child Development Helps You Create a Lifelong Mutuality and Love
Parenting is important to you because your children matter. As a caring adult, you want to give your kids the best. So you strive to understand child development and child discipline and become a better parent. You work hard for your family and give them more than you had as a child. You read parenting magazines and books. But have you ever asked yourself what you want from this relationship?
In your heart of hearts, if you imagined the best possible outcome for yourself and your family, what would you foresee?
Would you feel fulfilled if your children grew up to honor, cherish and respect you?
Every parent would.
But how do you create this, especially if you don't enjoy a healthy relationship with your parents?
And how do you change the way you raise your kids, if you're flying blind and making it up as you go along?
Where did you learn how to raise kids anyway? Did you go to school and get a masters in child development?
Probably not. (And don't worry ... you don't need one.)

Childrens Book Reviews: Books that Teach Kids How to Deal with Tough Issues and Make Good Choices
Childrens Book Reviews To children, the world is large and overwhelming. There's so much to learn and so much they do not understand. As such, Family Matters! Parenting Magazine offers parents childrens book reviews on books that will help children face tough issues ranging from learning how to deal with bullies to making difficult moral choices. Our criteria for doing a childrens book review is answered first by the question: does the book have a story line that teaches children how to better navigate their lives? Does the book offer advice based on experience that is applicable to children? Does it clarify a subject that is confusing? Does it engage the reader? Does it conjure up real life scenarios and offer insights as to how problems could have been handled with less injury to all. Does the book offer concrete ways to solve common problems? Does it open up avenues of discussion between parents and children? Are there characters in the story with whom children can identify? Is the book culturally correct?

Here's the story on historical fiction in my classroom: It illuminates time periods, helps me integrate the curriculum, and enriches social studies. Just take Amy's word for it. At the end of our westward-expansion unit, while modeling her journal entry after a fictional account we'd read, this fifth grader wrote: "Dear Diary, July 30, 1852: This journey has been heart-wrenching, thirst-quenching, and most of all, an adventure I will never forget." Blending stories into a study of history turns the past into a dynamic place. Of course, historical fiction doesn't stand alone in my instructional program; even the best literature cannot address skills and processes unique to social studies that kids must learn. I have students balance fiction with fact, validate historical hypotheses with research. Historical fiction is the spice. To help you build good fiction into your social studies program, below you'll find:

When children are involved in drama, they think first about the person they are portraying. By discussing the feelings of that person and other background events, children learn to put themselves into the "shoes" of others. Drama causes children to think and become more sensitive to the emotions and resulting behavior of others. Dramatic presentations help Bible stories come alive for children. It provides another avenue for learning and sharing about God for children who are kinesthetic learners. As children dramatize the life of a missionary, they begin to understand the hardships and commitment involved. Drama helps children apply Bible truths to their own lives as they dramatize the way God would have them act in given situations. Role-playing situations help children discuss possible consequences and solutions to problems. Here are several different ways to use drama to teach the Bible: Monologue
In a monologue, a child "becomes'' another person and speaks from that person's point of view. Monologues help children learn about the life and work of other people. Based on research about the Bible person, missionary or church helper, the child gives a first-person account. The monologue may be read aloud very simply or can be made more elaborate with props and costumes.

Home About Us Beliefs Contributions ... Spiritual Help Empower Index A/G Beliefs Age-Level Ministry Specialized Ministry Discipleship ... Return to Empower Index Teach them diligently: A case study in family life By James Bradford John Drakeford dedicated one of his books: "To my two sons, Warwick and Brenton, teachers in the art of family living, who in the process have put gray hairs in my head, bills in my pocket, illustrations in my sermons, happiness in my home, and pride in my heart." The confessions of a true parent. Few priorities rank higher in ministry than the nurturing of strong families. Family life is a microcosm of church life. The battle for values in our society will be won or lost in the family arena. It is here that either world changers are nurtured or social conformists are created. Kant, the philosopher, once remarked that "parents usually educate their children merely in such a manner that, however bad the world may be, they may adapt themselves to its present conditions." Is there an alternative to that sort of cultural accommodation? Fortunately, the clear family building mandate of Deuteronomy 6:6,7 gives us hope beyond just blending in. The transforming call is to "teach them diligently"–at home, in the marketplace, wherever one’s circle of influence permits the imprinting of the family unit with timeless vision and values.

This means, for example, that a public school or a non-profit educational institution may rent or purchase a copy of a film on video cassette, DVD or any other format and use it for instructional purposes in classrooms. http://www.worlded.org/us/health/heal/whyteachhealth.htm
Why Teach Health? Excerpt from The ABE Curriculum Framework for Health, Massachusetts Department of Education
1. Poor health interferes with the success of adult learners.
Teachers have long been aware that the academic success of students relies heavily on their physical, emotional, and family health. Adult education teachers in particular have noted that many adult students miss school often due to personal or family illness so that they cannot make the academic gains they desire. In fact, many students in ABE (Adult Basic Education) and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes have extremely limited access to comprehensible health care information and affordable health care services. This is often due to low literacy or insufficient English language skills, and myriad social and economic circumstances. 2. Low literacy and poor health are interrelated in a number of ways. Language and culture also affect access to health services and information. People with limited literacy skills in English have trouble reading and understanding health information unless it is clearly presented and linked to their realities (although even people with higher literacy skills articulate a need for personalized health information and communication). People with limited literacy tend to have less background health knowledge and vocabulary and therefore may not understand written or verbal information. They may not know about the services available to them, and may feel powerless and intimidated in relation to health professionals and institutions.

Reframing the Cultural Space of Computer and Video Games
by Kurt Squire, MIT "Mr. Squire, do you care to answer?" "Well, the Spanish Armada hit its peak in the late 16th century. They dominated the larger islands with sizable forts in Havana and Port Royale. For a brief time, the English had a colony here or there in Jamaica, and of course the French had their string of islands in the what is it, the lesser Antilles - the ones right below the English ones right below St. Kitts." I was starting to get warmed up. These obscure names and dates were flowing out of my mouth, but I had no idea where they came from. Jim Douglas, my high school history teacher, was surprised if not impressed. I was a fair student but not known for "reading ahead" or anything. "Go on. What kinds of ships did the English have?" "What kinds of ships did they have? Oh, well, only the Spanish ever had galleons, although you might see an occasional Dutch fast galleon not that the Dutch had many possessions, other than Curacao. It made for a great trading base though...Oh yeah, English ships...I can't remember, but they were definitely smaller, merchantmen / trading vessels" Again, rambling about the Caribbean. My best friend at the time, Jason, shot me an incredulous look. "Where in the hell are you getting this...is this some sort of joke?"

Teach Your Children Well
Ladies wear white socks An entire generation of children grew up without learning the simple things they would need to cope with life. Many sweet little girls did not learn from their mothers how to be thankful, obedient wives, and little boys never learned how to be real men and take care of the women in their life. I am sure today’s divorce rate reflects some of the “gender neutral” teaching. But the children in my life will know little girls love flowers and that boys take care of mamas. Black Issues in Higher Education
Feb 15, 2001
WASHINGTON From politician to professor, former Vice President Al Gore has a series of professorial duties on the horizon. Among them, the Tennessee native's first plan is to lead a series of lectures at Fisk, a historically Black university in Nashville. From his position at Fisk, he will lead a series of lectures at other predominately Black institutions. The Fisk job will be shared with Rep. John Lewis, a Georgia Democrat and civil rights leader who graduated from Fisk. Gore formally announced his plans last month to study or teach about journalism, the family and race relations at Columbia University, the University of California at Los Angeles and Middle Tennessee State University in addition to Fisk. Gore and his wife, Tipper, also plan to write a book about American families and their challenges.

Life as a Parent
This is an excellent introduction to the world of parenthood. It provides a light, common sense approach to parenting and gives good advice for each phase that your child will pass through.
How to Teach Your Children Discipline
Children have to be taught discipline. They are not born with it. Little by little parents have to teach it to them. While teaching discipline does take time and practice, it gets easier as children learn to control their own behavior. And best of all, teaching discipline does not have to hurt either the parents or the kids. This is a great article, filled with answers to commonly asked questions and contains many helpful suggestions for parents.
Emergency Illness And Injury Procedures
When parents enroll their child, they should provide child care provider with the contact information and consent that they will need if there is an emergency involving that child. A sample "Child Care Emergency Contact Information and Consent Form" is included in this section, along with first aid measures one should take under different situations.
