Lindsay Howeton- morural@mail.coin.missouri.edu Three independent farm families came together in 1992 to create Patchwork Family Farms, the economic development project of the Missouri Rural Crisis Center (MRCC). These families raised hogs the traditional way, in the sunshine and fresh air without the continuous use of antibiotics and with no growth hormones or synthetic growth promoters. It was evident to them, even in 1992, that concentration within the livestock industry was threatening their livelihood. Having been farmers all their lives, they looked for a way to secure their future by creating a project where they would receive fair prices and be able to market their premium quality pork products directly to consumers. Today, their vision is a successful reality. Patchwork now includes 15 independent family hog farmers located all around Missouri. Producers receive no less than 43 cents per pound or 15 percent above market price. This is significant because the average price paid to producers last year was 28 cents. Hog prices have hit such volatile lows as 8 cents per pound during the end of the 1998. This is also significant because it demonstrates that producers

Energy Hard Rock Mining Clean Air and Water Family Farms and Ranching ... Safe Food Home Family Farms and Ranching The dominant private corporations and public policies shaping the U.S. farm and food system are failing the family farmers and ranchers who produce our food. Farmers and ranchers have lost income, independence, and their farms and ranches to a system tilted in favor of input suppliers and food processors. Agricultural commodity markets and family farms and ranches are threatened by what Iowa State agricultural economist Neil Harl calls "the deadly combination" of concentration and vertical integration in agriculture.
  • Captive Supply
Senator Mike Enzi (R-WY) and Representative Earl Pomeroy (D-ND) have introduced legislation to require captive supply contracts to include a fixed base price and to be available on the open market to any interested producer. Captive supplies are livestock acquired by packers for slaughter through forwarding or marketing contracts.

Legislation passed in 1998 relieved small scale farmers of this additional burden. For other crops, such as ornamental trees and shrubs, the possibility of ad valorem taxation was eliminated. The legislation is noteworthy not because of the tax impact- farmers will save about $ 2.5 million a year, or an average of less than $ 20,000 per Georgia county- but because it targets those tax cuts to a well defined "family farm" scale agriculture. Though not originally written to include only family-owned farms, legislators agreed that a referendum specifically protecting family farms would have a greater chance of success. The legislation received unanimous support from Georgia legislators, with not a single dissenting vote cast in the General Assembly. The amendment then appeared on the Nov. 3 General Election ballot as Referendum A , which passed easily.

President The Most Rev. Raymond Burke Bishop of La Crosse Being Poor Green Ribbon Campaign The National Catholic Rural Life Conference is expressing its solidarity with farmers at this time of crisis by a " Green Ribbon Campaign ." The purpose of the campaign is to pray for and support farm families during this time of difficulty. Farm prices are at a historic low, farm families are suffering from low prices, weather-related disasters, the loss of a safety net due to the last Farm Bill "The Freedom to Farm Act of 1996". The "Green Ribbon" symbolizes HOPE . We pray for family farmers. We invite others in the religious community and in all walks of life to wear a green ribbon to show that you care. We ask everyone, urban and rural, to offer support, encouragement, and neighborly care for farm families suffering distress. We ask legislators at the local, state, and federal levels to work for more effective legislation to protect our environment, to support a family farm system of agriculture, to support healthy rural communities. Our green ribbon means that this is "A Time to Act." The National Commission on Small Farms has published a report calling for significant policy changes in agriculture. The " Green Ribbon Campaign " signifies that it is time for action to support our farm families and our rural communities.

Corporate Hogs at the Public Trough Murphy Family Farms, Illinois Residents in Knox County, Illinois, were concerned when Murphy Family Farms - the nation's 2nd largest hog producer - came to town. This company's environmental record in other states is horrendous, and the state of Illinois has weak standards for CAFOs. Yet local officials ignored these concerns. Instead, they offered the company tax exemptions and used taxpayer dollars for road improvements. Locals are now suffering from air and water pollution, and property values on adjacent lands are being reduced because of their polluting neighbor. On December 2, 1996, James Baird was reelected as Chairman of the Knox County Board. What the residents didn't know is that by voting in Baird, they also voted in a major factory farm.Baird had pledged before the election not to work for hog giant Murphy Family Farms, because of public outcry against this huge factory farm. (1) But after his victory he informed the county that he and his son, Doug Baird, were to be co-owners of The Highlands, a corporate hog farm under sole contract with Murphy.

Michigan's First Family Farms: Then and Now, the Tradition Lives On For a young person growing up in Michigan, the days are probably filled with going to school, spending time with friends, maybe playing on a soccer team, and doing a few chores in exchange for a weekly allowance. It is not uncommon for families to move to different towns or to new houses in the same town, as families grow and prosper. It’s great to be a kid most of the time, isn’t it? Now imagine daily life right around the time Michigan became the nation’s 26 th state, in 1837. Most of Michigan was covered by vast forests. In the wilderness, there were no paved roads or railroad tracks. With only a few scattered cities established in the state, pioneers had to move along wagon trails, plank roads and stagecoach routes to travel through the state. Fur trading was still the state’s largest industry, and travelers had to be on the look-out for wild animals, like bears and wolves.

Dunton Family Farms
The family farm is located in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Western Oregon. Our ancestors moved here from Maine, after a brief stay in Iowa and Kansas, in the late 1800s. Great-grandfather, Victor Hugo Dunton, built the house and farm at which we live. Our children are the 5th generation of Duntons to be raised on this land and 6th in the community. Because the farm is nearly 100 years old, we have worked since early 1988 repairing, renovating and replanting. We have devoted most of our resources - time and money - to this endeavor. We raise vegetables, herbs, flowers, fruit, nuts, and grass hay, along with laying hens, cats, and a couple of dogs. Click here to view the farm's main Web site, find a detailed history, or see what is currently "farm fresh": http://www.victoryseeds.com/dunton Our family owns and operates an old time seed company. Our mission is provide our gardening friends and customers with high quality, open-pollinated and heirloom (non-hybrid) seed varieties under our packet seed brand of The Victory Seed Company . We strive to promote the practices of sustainable agriculture, organic practices, seed saving and general stewardship of those things which have been entrusted to us during our short stay on this planet. Family farms havebeen an important dimension of Maryland Agriculture since the state's colonial beginnings through the present day. These agricultural operations diversify Maryland's production, as the three family farms highlighted in this exhibit demonstrate. The Brooke family maintained a diverse operation in which women played an integral part; the Shipley family planted vegetables and fruits for sale in urban centers; and the Davis family shifted their farm production towards dairy farming. Welcome to Rhodes Family Farms. We grow persimmons in Kingsburg, located in the Central Valley of California. Persimmons are generally ready to harvest in the month of September. We have an early variety that we pluck as soon as it is ripe (never before, of course) and send it on it's way to the many happy consumers through-out the San Francisco Bay and San Jose areas. While there are some lucky grocery stores that carry our persimmons, they are mostly only available at the Farmer's Markets we attend. Please check our schedule of markets to find one near you. 99. Family Farms In Montana History; The 1910 Expedition
Of course, though family farms have been the setting for scenes of happiness, they have also been the settings for experiences of hardship and heartache
http://www.edheritage.org/1910/folkways/familyfarm.htm
"Five unrelated persons were a bunch of travelers or settlers.
A family of five was a cultural imperative."
Elliott West T he family farm may be the most important institution in American history. In America, the ideal of freedom was more than the lofty words of politicians. In America, the dream that one could shape one's own destiny was made a practical possibility for many thousands of people because land was available. People flooding west thought little about the claims Native Americans might have to the land. They intended to struggle and to advance themselves, to "prove up." The landscape of Montana changed quickly. People carried their cultural ideals with them, and they quickly applied a geometric grid on the land, building fences along straight section lines and plowing fields in straight furrows. Towns were laid out on precise grids.
A human order was taking shape upon the land. The landscape was being humanized as settlers enacted their culture. Along the roads and in the towns, the spires of school buildings, the steeples of churches, and the clock towers of courthouses began rising as a new a moral and intellectual order transformed the geographical space into a particular human place. Montana became what historian Elliott West has called a "value-scape." Poor people pooled their cash to build school buildings and hire teachers. This was often the first activity that got a group of people in an area working together as a community. In a sense, the presence of children and the commitments of their families was the foundation upon which communities were built.
