"I just kinda got a love for hogs."
Carl Weihardt and his loving hogs
Carl Weihardt leans back against the fence to tickle the ears of his favorite sow. She came running over as soon as she saw him like a loyal dog, an expression on her face that looked for all the world like a delighted grin.
"Practically every one of them I got is pets. They know me and I know them and they're just part of the family."
Carl has been raising hogs all his life on this piece of land in central Missouria state known for its quality pigs. Hog raising has always been the mainstay of Missouri's family farmers, something to keep the lights on when the harvest was poor, and a source of friendly competition at the county fairs. Missouri farmers were proud of their hogs, up until the last few years.
Recently, the hog market has been going haywire. "It's like riding a roller coaster, got down to 8 cents a pound," lamented Carl, "Got so a bottle of medicine cost more than what a fat hog will bring you."
"It just makes me mad that the big guys come in here and make it hard on us small guys to try to keep the farm viable," Carl protested. He has watched almost all of his neighbors sell off their sows and dismantle their pens, and now has a hard time even finding a store that will sell him hog feed in his county. For those farmers who have no other options, desperation can drive them to sign suicidal contracts with these same corporations to build factory facilities on their own property (and at their own expense). The vast majority of farmers never pays off the initial purchases; and they are left with a huge debt and a big, stinking lagoon of pig excrement upsetting anyone downwind.

ELECTRICITY FROM THE WIND:
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
FOR RURAL COMMUNITIES AMERICAN CORN GROWERS FOUNDATION: It may seem hard to believe, but according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's 2003 farm income forecast, 94% of total farm household income comes from off-farm sources. Many rural families work off-farm jobs in addition to farming to make ends meet. Dan McGuire, chief executive officer of the American Corn Growers Foundation (ACGF), said that low commodity prices combined with high production costs are responsible for this. McGuire said that the farm income forecast is a compelling reason for farmers and ranchers to support wind energy because it provides a source of income and fosters economic development in rural communities. "Wind farming does pay," he said.

Eggribusiness - EGGS HIDDEN RISKS Did you know that excessive cholesterol is only one among many hazards posed by egg consumption? To keep millions of hens alive in the polluted egg factory environment, the industry relies upon antibiotics, pesticides, and other hazardous chemicals. The toxic dangers these hidden ingredients pose to consumers make the health hazards associated with cholesterol seem minor by comparison. You've seen the egg industry' slick advertisements for "farm fresh" eggs. But most eggs don't come from real farms. Today's eggs come from huge indoor factories where literally millions of hens are kept in most inhumane, disease-ridden conditions imaginable. Can eggs from drugged and diseased hens possibly be good for consumers as the advertisements claim? Certainly not. Leading public health professionals across the country warn that the wholesale misuse of antibiotics is creating hazardous strains of bacteria, such as salmonella. Many of these antibiotic resistant "super bugs" can be lethal to human beings. Insecticides are not only sprayed around the hens' cages, but are actually mixed in the feed given to the hens. "Feed through" insecticides, many of which are illegal, make the excrement that piles up in and around the cages toxic to flies and other insects. As debate rages as to what constitutes an "acceptable" level of toxins in eggs - hens, human beings, and the environment continue to be poisoned.

    Your Senators' Estate Tax Votes
The Estate Tax and Family Farms
The current estate tax rules are too complex and should be simplified.
Because of its complexity, the estate tax actually falls harder on a mid-size farm that has not done estate planning than on some big estates that have used the best legal advice. This problem can be best solved by simplifying the estate tax rules. Repealing the estate tax will actually hurt small family farms.
Estate taxes help preserve family farms by leveling the playing field and helping them compete against mega-scale agriculture. Repeal of the estate tax will only encourage further concentration of farm ownership.

    Estate Tax Background

The Estate Tax and Family Farms The effect of the estate tax on farms has been greatly exaggerated.
According to the IRS, of the 2.3 million people who died in 1998, only 650 left an estate with significant farm assets. A Treasury Department analysis found that estates that included family farms paid less than 1% of all estate taxes. On April 8, 2001, the New York Times reported that the pro-repeal American Farm Bureau Foundation could not cite a single case of a family farm lost due to the estate tax. Proponents of estate tax repeal have rejected reforms that would have protected family farms.
In 2001, the Senate rejected a Democratic reform proposal that would have tripled the family business exemption to $4 million for individuals, $8 million for couples. That reform would have exempted the vast majority of farms and small businesses that currently pay estate taxes.By taking an all-or-nothing attitude, and refusing to compromise on reforms that would protect farms, pro-repeal forces have shown that they don’t really care about family farms. In addition, 49 of the 51 Senators who voted to repeal the estate tax in 2000 also voted for the disastrous 1996 "Freedom to Farm" act that has hurt family farmers and led to greater corporate control of agriculture.

The history of our farm: The farm is located in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Western Oregon in USDA zone 8. We typically enjoy 160+ days of frost free growing season with long days and some rainfall. Our winters are generally mild, rarely dipping into the teens. Since emigrating to America in the 1600s, the thirteen generations of my paternal lineage have been farmers, either exclusively, or in conjunction with a trade or profession. Gardening is a family tradition. Our ancestors moved here from Maine, via Kansas in the late 1800s. Great-grandfather, Victor Hugo Dunton, built the house and farm at which we live. Our children are the fifth generation of Duntons to be raised on this land and the sixth in our community. This soil has sustained our family through times of world war, global economic collapses, societal unrest, and natural disasters. We believe that with proper stewardship, the farm will continue to provide sustenance for many generations to come.

One of the most promising ways to increase family farm and ranch viability is to tap into high-value niche markets. The farm and ranch share of profit in the food systems is falling. But there is an opportunity to turn that around. The “mass market” is breaking up in market segments – groups of consumers seeking unique products with specific attributes. Some are willing to pay premiums for those attributes. For example, the nationwide Hartman survey found that over half of consumers would pay a premium for food produced in a more healthful and environmentally sound manner.
That offers an opportunity for farmers to go beyond producing cheap, undifferentiated commodities to adding value and earning premiums by delivering unique products that are highly valued by different groups of consumers. That may be food that tastes better. Perhaps it is locally produced and fresher or is produced in a way that improves its flavor.
It may be food that is healthier or perceived as consistent with a healthier lifestyle – such as products raised without pesticide, hormones, and antibiotics. Or it could include products that are healthier because of what they have in them such as the beneficial fats in flax and grass fed beef.

    Sizes of Family Farms
F arming operations in Knox County vary in size ranging from less than one hundred acres to more than four thousand. The Hathaways, who own one of the largest farms in Knox County, believe that increasing the size of their operation and keeping up with the latest technology allows them to "continue in this business."
Others, like Kathy Grassbaugh, a dairy farmer from Howard Township, feel that part of the expansion of their operation has been a result from outside pressure. "I don't like the idea of getting bigger and bigger. I guess I like the point we used to be at. I don't even like it that we have gotten this big [nearly one thousand acres and one hundred head of Holstein cows]. It is almost like the fun of doing some of the things has been taken out because you are under so much pressure."
As the size of operations increases, many farmers feel their farms are becoming more business-like. Kathy's husband, Dale Grassbaugh, feels this is true. "You've got to look at farming from a business aspect now. Definitely there is still a trend, a way of life, part of farming but you have got to make decisions and they have to be business decisions."

Family Farms, Not Factory Farms Updated April 3, 2004 Family Farms, Not Factory Farms Iowa is an agricultural powerhouse. It is number one in the nation for pork, corn and soybean production. Twenty-four percent of all hogs nationally are raised in Iowa. Many of the state's industries are related to agriculture including meatpacking, which is a major source of jobs in many areas of the state. As an agricultural state, farming issues greatly impact all of Iowa's residents, effecting everything from water quality to property taxes. There have been drastic changes in the rural economy in the last decade. While farmers and their families are working hard to make ends meet, agribusiness interests, particularly industrial livestock facilities, are infiltrating our rich farmland and pushing the family farmer out of business. As factory-style animal production has gained a stranglehold in Iowa, thousands of Iowa's family farmers go under every year. The livestock factories that replace the family farms greatly distress Iowa's environment and rural economy. ICAN is committed to policies that will promote sustainable family farms and strengthen rural communities.
