We have friends in booths at the festival who grow and sell this herb and they love sharing tips on planting, harvesting, and the many culinary and medicinal uses of garlic. Some bring garlic seeds you can buy for planting in your own garden. Our festival celebrates life, garlic, and the fine wines in Central Virginia. Many family members and friends work with us each year to continue the festival here in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

90. FamilyFun: Six Activities For Fall
The Fun of fall. Ways to celebrate autumn with FamilyFun. by Ronnie Rom. Every fall, she works on her techniques like a surfer in search of the perfect wave.

Ways to celebrate autumn with FamilyFun by Ronnie Rom
of 7 My eight-year-old , Rebecca, is no casual leaf jumper. Every fall, she works on her techniques like a surfer in search of the perfect wave. She leaps, she cartwheels, she even drags out our mini trampoline to maximize her running long jump. Our toddler, Arcadia, is never far behind. At the age of three, she already recognizes leaf jumping as one of the things we always do to welcome fall. It is a tradition, like apple picking, that my girls anticipate as the weather turns crisp. For us and for many of our friends, such fall rituals are like checkpoints that help us mark, even slow down, the passing of time just a little. One family sets off with hiking sticks and baby backpacks to witness the changing landscape up close. Another friend keeps an album, to which each family member adds a leaf every year. At our house, the season never passes without a jostling hayride through a nearby orchard, a day spent making a scarecrow, or any of our other favorite activities you'll find on these pages. Granted, it's hard not to be fond of fall when you live in New England, as we do. But no matter where you live, we think you'll find that these pastimes offer a nice change of pace for a season of changes.

Purchase dried corn cobs from a feed-and-seed store; or purchase ears of corn at the store, shuck them, cut them into 2-inch lengths, and allow them to dry for a couple of weeks.
Place trays or paper plates of tempera paints at each table. Show children how to dip the end of the corn cob into the paint, then press it onto a paper to create a flower shape.
Give each child a sheet of paper, and ask them to create a garden full of corn flowers. They may use markers or crayons to add stems and centers after flowers have dried.

Crafts/ Projects Fall Leaf Crafts and Fun
Looking for something to do with all those leaves piling up in your yard? One of Kids' Turn regular visitors, Calm , from Ontario, Canada offers these great ideas!
  • Make a mask. Collect different colour leaves. Once dry, glue them to a plain mask to make a really cool Fall mask. You might even use for Halloween.
  • Create a colourful centrepiece for Thanksgiving (October in Canada, November in USA). You can collect leaves still on the branch to fill a vase or collect fallen leaves and fill a clear glass bowl.
  • When making a hand-outlined turkey (a craft involving making a turkey out of the shape of your hand) you can use colourful leaves for the tail feathers instead of feathers. You can also use pressed leaves on homemade dream catchers (press them so they last longer and keep their colourfulness instead of turning brown)
  • Rake up your leaves and get a head start on Halloween decorations by stuffing a scarecrow with them.
  • Collect different kinds of leaves and research them to find out what kinds of trees they come from. Then make a chart for future reference. Perhaps you could try collecting seeds from the trees as well and growing them. Don't label them when you plant them and see if you can identify the tree's type from the chart you made.
  • Make a leaf wreath for Thanksgiving, or just for fall. Glue the leaves onto a circle of cardboard for the frame.

fall Leaf Ideas. Gather together some leaves that have fallen from the trees. typing paper construction paper crayons, white craft glue scissors leaves.
http://www.billybear4kids.com/holidays/thanksgiving/crafts/leaves.htm
Fall Leaf Ideas
Gather together some leaves that have fallen from the trees. Make sure they are not real crispy, you should be able to bend and move them without them breaking up on you.
You'll need:
typing paper
construction paper
crayons
white craft glue
scissors
leaves
Place the leaf down flat on a table. Then put a piece of typing paper over the leaf. With your crayon, color over the area where the leaf is laying. Press firmly with your crayon, but not too hard... you don't want to break your crayons! You can use one color if you like to... or you can use lots of pretty colors!
When the picture you've colored looks like a leaf... stop. What you've just done was made an impression of the leaf by using the texture of the leaf! You can do this with other objects... coins are fun too! Name Cards Fold your typing paper in half, then in half again. Put your leaf under the first layer ... then use your crayon to bring out the texture of the leaf. Now write the person's name on this card. When finished... put the name card on the dinner table... This will be perfect for those coming to Thanksgiving dinner! They will be able to know where to sit when it's time to eat! Thanksgiving Cards Fold a piece of typing paper in half, then fold it in half again. Put your leaf under the first layer... then use your crayon to bring out the texture of the leaf. Now write a greeting on the card. This makes wonderful gifts!
