Falklands War
The Falklands War (in Spanish : Guerra de las Malvinas, or the Malvinas War ) was a conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands between March and June . Though surprised by an Argentinian attack on the islands, Britain eventually prevailed and the islands remained in British hands, in accordance with the wishes of the inhabitants. In Argentina, the conclusion of the war led to the downfall of the military junta and the restoration of a system of democracy
Background
Ownership of the islands had long been disputed. In the 16th Century , the French were first to establish a claim by right of occupation, only to be expelled by Spain , which then ceded the Falklands to England. The islands remained unoccupied, however, and the English claim lapsed. Argentina gained independence from Spain in and moved to occupy the Falklands ( Islas Malvinas ) in , but that settlement did not endure and the Argentinian claim similarly fell into abeyance. Finally, in

The Falklands War 1982

In 1982 the Royal Navy played the leading role in a remarkable war in which a carrier and amphibious task force supported by nuclear submarines recaptured the remote Falklands Islands in the South Atlantic that had been invaded and captured by Argentina.
On 2 April 1982, the day of the invasion, destroyers and frigates exercising off Gibraltar under Rear Admiral ‘Sandy’ Woodward were ordered south. They were joined by the carriers Hermes and Invincible, loaded with Sea Harrier fighters as well as amphibious ships and merchant ships were taken up from the trade for use as troopships. These were also three nuclear powered submarines to cover the surface ships. In overall command was Commander-in-Chief Fleet, Admiral Sir John Fieldhouse at his headquarters at Northwood near London. Woodward commanded the carrier task group while Commodore Mike Clapp was in charge of the amphibious ships.
First the island of South Georgia was recaptured in operations that included helicopters sinking an Argentine submarine, Santa Fe. As he neared the Falklands Woodward felt vulnerable to the threat of Argentine aircraft, both carrier and land based, missile armed surface ships and submarines. His concerns led to approval being given to sink any Argentine warships outside Argentine territorial waters; HMS Conqueror was at the time in touch with the cruiser General Belgrano which was duly sunk. This ended the threat of the Argentine carrier and surface ships, which took refuge in coastal waters. Argentine submarines were ineffective due to torpedo problems and effective British anti-submarine warfare.

History Today
August, 1996 by Hugh Stephenson
Picton Publishing 160 pp. 29.50 [pounds] In the three centuries since 1690, when they were first claimed for Britain and named after the then Treasurer of the Navy, Lord Falkland, those wind-and-rain-swept islands in the South Atlantic have claimed a place in British political and military affairs out of all proportion to their limited economic significance. Most of the history written about them has served to put them in their strategic context. Now, indirectly as a result of the 1982 Falklands War with Argentina, we have two books of quite another kind about the islands' history. The Isabella was an ordinary brig on an ordinary voyage back to England from the convict colony of New South Wales via Cape Horn. The passengers were time-expired convicts and returning soldiery, including a detachment of Royal Marines who had been part of an original group of forty-nine sent out in 1803 to help found Hobart in Van Diemen's Land and then forgotten about by the admiralty. In February 1813, with the Master drunk, she ran in the dark onto an outlying island of the Falklands group. The islands at the time were uninhabited. The fifty-four passengers and crew had no prospect of rescue.

A description of SAS operations during the Falklands war.
http://www.britains-smallwars.com/Falklands/sas.htm
SAS Operations When Argentina invaded the Falklands on 2nd April 1982, both Brigadier Peter de la Billiere and Lieutenant-Colonel Mike Rose, the Commander of 22 SAS, fought hard to have the regiment included in the task force. By early April, members of both D and G squadrons were on their way. South Georgia During the operation to retake South Georgia, bad weather trapped SAS men on a glacier and a Wessex 3 and two Wessex 5s were sent to retrieve them. The first Wessex lifted off as the wind whipped up the snow. The Wessex from HMS Tidespring lifted off, but the pilot lost his bearing in the snow and crashed, skidding for some 50 yards, with the Wessex tipping over. The other two helicopters now embarked their troops. They lifted and landed next to the crashed Wessex and took on her aircrew and soldiers. Both aircraft dumped fuel to carry the extra load. Visibility by this time was practically zero and the wind and snow had not abated. The helicopters lifted off, and the Wessex 3, equipped with radar, took off with the Wessex 5 following astern and made their way down the glacier. Seconds later, the helicopters traversed a small ridge and the Wessex 5 flared violently and struck the top of the ridge. It rolled onto its side and could not be contacted by radio. The remaining overloaded helicopter returned to the ship, some 30 miles away to the north, and disembarked its passengers. The Wessex 3 returned to the crash site, but was unable to land. They made contact by radio and confirmed there were no serious casualties. The Wessex 3 returned to Antrim to wait for a break in the weather. An hour later an opportunity presented itself and the Wessex 3 flew back and embarked the survivors and was flown back to Antrim by Lt-Commander Ian Stanley RN, who was awarded the DSO.

Introduzione

The Falklands War
Introduction Causes of the War Politically, the "junta"'s worst nightmare was unfolding. The labor unions were joining forces with "Las Madres de Mayo," an organization representing relatives of the political prisoners and disappeared. This alliance meant that the enormous Argentine middle class was uniting against the government. The Conflict ," a ship belonging to the Argentine Navy. ," General Galtieri had a very specific goal in mind: to save his government. Forcing negotiations over the Falklands was a gamble, and it was up to the British to call his bluff. The Battle for the Falklands , describes its best weapons: "She had at least six ships fitted with Exocet sea-skimming missiles, also the principal surface weapon of the Royal Navy. She had four submarines, two of them formidably difficult to detect with sonar." ," was a "just war." As Earl H. Tilford, Jr. writes in "Air Power Lessons," a chapter from Military Lessons of the Falkland Islands War, "Napoleon Bonaparte noted that in war the moral is to the physical as three to one"
