Discovery and First Landings

The Islands were first sighted in 1592 by English seafarer, Captain John Davis, in the sailing ship "Desire". (The vessel's name has been incorporated in the Falkland Islands motto on the crest "Desire the Right").
The first recorded landing on the Falkland Islands was by Captain John Strong in 1690.
Maritime History
The dramatic maritime history of the South Atlantic is evident from the numerous wrecks in Stanley harbour; of particular note are:
The Lady Elizabeth - damaged in 1913 as she approached Stanley, the ‘Lady Liz’ was originally built in Sunderland in 1879. She was used as a floating warehouse until 1936 when she broke her moorings in a storm and drifted to her current dramatic location at the East end of Stanley harbour.
Jhelum - Built in Liverpool in 1849, the Jhelum was a wooden barque typical of the type of vessel that traded extensively with the sub-continent during the last century. Her crew refused to sail any further in her when she arrived, badly damaged, in August 1870 and she served as a warehouse for many years.
The Charles Cooper - This American-built square-rigger arrived in Stanley in 1866. She is the last survivor of the North Atlantic Packet ships, vessels that provided a scheduled passenger, freight and mail service between North America and Europe.

The Falkland Islands War, or the La Guerra de las Melvinas, of 1982 was a peculiar war. Great Britain and Argentina fought over an island group 3000 miles from Great Britain and claimed by Spain and then Argentina since the 17 th Century. The Argentine poet and author Jorge Luis Borgas described the events as “… Like two bald men fighting over a comb.” The Falklands War lasted from April 2 until June 14, 1982. The British lost 236 military personnel and the Argentines lost 750. The war lasted ten weeks despite diplomatic overtures by the United Nations, United States and by several South American countries. Peace was concluded after British victory over the Argentine garrisons on the Falklands. The Falkland Islands War raised serious questions of diplomatic, military, and legal origins around the world. Britain and Argentina have settled most of their differences but the question of the islands still remain.

Previous Article Contents Next Article Article by Ron Smith The Falklands War: A Moral Balance Sheet In what follows I examine the events of the Falklands War in the light of the just war tradition and come to some conclusions about the moral justifications which might be offered for the two parties involved. For the purpose of the discussion I assume that there is, indeed, such a thing as a just war and I shall, thus, not be concerned to defend this claim against the claims of pacifism in its various forms. I simply take it that there are circumstances in which recourse to violence is, in principle, morally justified and that there are morally defensible (or at least tolerable) means of prosecuting such just wars. These two aspects of the just war are frequently distinguished in moral discussion so that we have (to use the traditional Latin tags) - jus ad bellum (the justice of the war) and jus in bello (justice in the war). For any conflict it may thus be asked not only whether the belligerent parties are justified in fighting at all but also whether the way in which they fight is in accordance with the set of international understandings and formal agreements which make up the modern concept of the just war. Jus in bello Issues In the case of the Falklands conflict, there is relatively little that needs to be said in regard to the conduct of the war itself. The Falklands war was remarkable for the adherence of both parties to the laws of war and to general just war understandings. Hastings and Jenkins comment that it was 'fought with remarkable respect for decency on both sides'. The International Committee of the Red Cross also gave the belligerent parties a broadly clean bill of health in their 1985 report.

Administrative/Biographical History
The origins of the Falklands War, April-June 1982 lie in a 150 year dispute over the sovereignty of East and West Falkland, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands in the southern Atlantic. The Falklands were the most important of these and the only permanently settled islands - they were known by the Argentineans as the Malvinas. Originally discovered by the Spanish, the British had subsequently obtained and settled them, holding them despite Argentinean counter-claims. The immediate cause of the war, though, was the unauthorized presence of Argentineans, (contracted by scrap dealer C.S. Davidoff) on South Georgia. An attempt by the British in March 1982 to expel the party by force led to an excalation of hostilities, resulting in the landing of Argentinean troops on the Falkland Islands on 2nd April, the surrender of the Royal Marines on the same day, and the annexation of South Georgia on the 3rd. On 7th April the British sent a task force to recapture the islands. A series of diplomatic mediations proved unsuccessful, and on 25th April Royal Marines recaptured South Georgia. British forces landed on San Carlos, at East Falkland, on 21st May, after a period of bombardment, and the loss of ships and aircraft on both sides. The British took Goose Green and Darwin on 28th May, Teal Inlet on 30th and Mount Kent soon afterwards. Mount Tumbledown fell on 12th June and Argentinean forces, led by Gral Menendez, surrendered at Port Stanley on 14th June.

    History
The Falkland Islands are currently a dependency of Britain, but since their first discovery in 1592, the rule of the Islands has changed numerous times. Englishman John Davis discovered The Falkland Islands, but nobody went ashore until Captain John Strong, nearly 100 years later. However, it was the French who took ownership of the Islands, when they developed a settlement there in 1764. Britain attempted to claim the Islands from the French, but was unsuccessful.
The Islands were then sold to the Spanish, but again Britain attempted to claim them unsuccessfully. In 1806, the Spanish left and there was no official rule again until 1820, when the Islands were formally claimed by Argentina. The French then regained control for a short period, until, in 1833, Britain took management of the Falklands. A British Governor was appointed and the Islands have been a dependency of Britain ever since, but this has not been plain sailing. Argentina still wanted the Islands and although by the 1970s a relative friendship existed between the two countries, this gradually deteriorated. In 1977 the future of the Islands was discussed, followed in 1980 by a Foreign Office visit to see the Falkland people. Unfortunately by 1981, no mutual agreement could be reached. This led to the Falklands war of 1982.
The war ended on 14th June 1982 and the Falkland Islands were successfully returned to British control. During the war, 258 Britons died, 3 Falkland Islanders and over 1,000 Argentinians. It was not until 1990 that the two countries re-estalished diplomatic relations. British troops are still based in The Falkland Islands, around 2,000 personnel at the Mount Pleasant air base. The responsibility locally for defence and security of the Islands now lies with the Commander of the British Forces Falklands Islands.

The Falklands War (in Spanish Guerra de las Malvinas , or the Malvinas War ) was a conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands between March and June . Though surprised by an Argentinian attack on the islands, Britain eventually prevailed and the islands remained in British hands, in accordance with the wishes of the inhabitants. In Argentina, the conclusion of the war led to the downfall of the military junta and the restoration of a system of democracy.

The dream is not always what was expected when it comes to reality. Mack tells the story of a young man gone to soldiering, gone to war, taking pride in his service; faced with helplessness when the ships were attacked; blaming himself for the carnage for a long time to come. Yet it takes awhile for things like this to sink in; there is a period of denial, a period of non-acceptance, a mental trauma that puts on hold for awhile that which eventually comes out; that eventually becomes recognized as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. From the Falklands, Mack was sent to Northern Ireland where he and his mates learned of the extent that hatred for fellow beings can reach. After the war, the bombing of the Galahad, the conditions existing in Northern Ireland, with the return to the normalcy of everyday civilian life Mack found himself besieged with nightmares, extreme depression, lost of employment, lost of a marriage, all common symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Please note that these photographs were taken with a 110 camera and not very well developed, consequently they are of rather poor quality and in most cases you are not going to see a better picture by clicking on the image to get the larger version. They are all I've got.
    Views around Port Stanley
On the left is the Upland Goose Hotel, probably famous around the world after the conflict, and the less well-known Globe Hotel in the photo next to it. The chap who owned the Globe at the time had gone to the Falklands to get away from the hurly-burly of modern life and absolutely hated it when the bar was packed out every night with boistrous, boozy servicemen. Eventually we were banned but I had stopped going there anyway because I couldn't stand the noise and clamour. Besides them is a photo of the cathedral on the harbour front and a photo of a typical back street.
Be warned, the larger version of this will take ages to download, it's nearly 300k, but you might find it fun to scroll along the harbour front. Just to the left of center is the Sir Tristram, sister ship to the Sir Lancelot that were both bombed out in Bluff Cove. The Tristram was less severely damaged, see below, and was towed to the harbour to be used by the Royal Engineers for accommodation and workshops. At the center of the frame is the main jetty where we used to catch the landing craft to and from the ships, the composite photo was taken from the Rangatira where I was accommodated. Government House and all the main official buildings are away to the right of the frame.

Most people have heard of Britain's involvement in military conflicts in the later half of this century, such as the Falklands War and the Gulf War. What the younger generation does not realize is that soldiers, sailors, and airmen from Britain and the Commonwealth have been fighting small wars to defend Britain's shrinking empire since the end of World War Two. From the insect ridden jungles of Malaya to the frozen hills of Korea, in the back streets of Aden and Cyprus, from the African bush of Kenya to the rain soaked hills of the Falkland Islands, young National Servicemen and regular British soldiers have been defending the British empire and her allies for the last 58 years. This is their story. This site was started in January 1999 and the Webmasters are constantly updating various chapters. If the campaign you served in is not listed within this web site, please e-mail us and tell us about it. Please note that NEGATIVE e-mails will be ignored. It is not our intention to ignore any military conflict since 1945, it just takes time to gather all the information and publish it.
