The Falklands War (in Spanish Guerra de las Malvinas , or the Malvinas War ) was a conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands between March and June . Though surprised by an Argentinian attack on the islands, Britain eventually prevailed and the islands remained in British hands, in accordance with the wishes of the inhabitants. In Argentina, the conclusion of the war led to the downfall of the military junta and the restoration of a system of democracy Table of contents 1 Background 2 Build Up 3 Failed diplomacy 4 Invasion ... edit
Background
Ownership of the islands had long been disputed. In the 18th Century , the French were first to establish a claim by right of occupation, only to be expelled by Spain , which then ceded the Falklands to England. The islands remained unoccupied, however, and the English claim lapsed. Argentina gained independence from Spain in and moved to occupy the Falklands ( Islas Malvinas ) in , but that settlement did not endure and the Argentinian claim similarly fell into abeyance. Finally, in the islands were settled by the British. Argentina nevertheless continued to argue that the 'Malvinas' were Argentine territory. (For more details on the origin of the dispute see

    Falkland Islands War of 1982
The Falklands Islands War of 1982 was an undeclared war where Argentina suffered heavy military losses and the military junta was discredited.
The Falkland Islands are a group of islands 300 miles east of Argentina. The two main islands are East Falkland and West Falkland. There are about 200 smaller islands that together form a total land area of approximately 4,700 square miles. The capital is Port Stanley. The Falkland Islands include the British territories of South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands, and the Shag and Clerke rocks. The population of the islands in 1991 was about 2,100. Argentina has claimed that the islands belong to them since the early 1800's, but Britain has occupied and governed there since 1833. Argentina's own history claims that Esteban Gmez of Magellan's Spanish expedition in 1522 was the first to see the islands. According the Encyclopedia Britannica the English sailor John Davis might have been the first to identify the Falklands in 1592. The Dutch explorer Sebald de Weerdt sighted the islands around 1600. England's John Strong made the first recorded landing in the Falklands in 1690. The British laid claim to the islands and named the sound between the two main islands after Viscount Falkland. bodyOffer(16504) In 1764 the French navigator Louis-Antoine de Bougainville began the first permanent settlement on East Falkland. Natives of St. Malo populated a French fishery there, which is why the Argentines call the islands "Islas Malvinas". The following year the British settled on West Falkland Island. The Spanish bought the French settlement in 1767 and considered the islands part of their empire. In 1770 a Spanish fleet arrived and asked the British to evacuate, which they refused to do. This was the first sign of conflict between Britain and Spain over the Islands. The Spanish returned with a larger force and convinced the British forces to leave on July 14, 1770. The British threatened to go to war over the island in 1771 and reoccupied West Falkland, then left the island in 1774.

    History
Although there's some evidence that Patagonian Indians reached the Falklands in rudimentary canoes, the islands were uninhabited when Europeans began to frequent the South Atlantic in the 17th century. A British expedition made the first documented landing in 1690, whereupon they claimed the islands for the crown and named the sound between the two main islands after a British naval officer, Viscount Falkland. The name was later applied to the whole island group. No European power established a settlement on the islands until France landed a garrison at Port Louis on East Falkland in 1764. (A small community of fishermen from St Malo lent the islands their French name, Žles Malouines, from which the Spanish Islas Malvinas derives.) When Spain caught wind of the settlers' presence, they pressured the French government to remove the garrison by citing the papal Treaty of Tordesillas, which had divided the New World between Spain and Portugal. The French complied, and in 1767 the Spanish went on to oust a British settlement at West Falkland's Port Egmont too. (Under threat of war, Spain restored the settlement the following year; the British gave it up of their own accord in 1774, though they held tight to their territorial claims.) The Spanish erected a penal colony at Port Louis, only to abandon it in the early 18th century as the town's ranks swelled with maverick whalers and sealers. In the late 1820s, nearly a decade after Buenos Aires declared its independence from Spain, a government-backed entrepreneur from Buenos Aires, Louis Vernet, moved to the Falklands and asserted himself as its governor. In 1831, his seizure of three American sealing ships triggered reprisals from a hot-headed US naval officer, whose retaliatory attack left Port Louis beyond restoration. Vernet scampered back to Buenos Aires, leaving a token Argentine force in Port Louis until 1833, when they were expelled by the returning British.

The Fleet Air Arm currently operates BAe Sea Harriers and Westland Commando helicopters. Smaller, attack helicopters such as the Westland Wasp and Lynx have been deployed on smaller vessels since about 1960, taking over the roles once performed by fragile biplanes such as the Fairey Swordfish.

    Royal Signals inthe Falklands War
The war came as a surprise when, on 2nd/3rd April 1982, Argentine forces attacked and occupied British colonies on the Falkland Island and South Georgia. Altogether 600 officers and men of the Royal Signals subsequently took part in the conflict which became known as OPERATION CORPORATE. The Task Force set out from Portsmouth on 5th April 1982. The first Royal Signals involvement was with the SAS detachments that were inserted to obtain information about the enemy. One brave effort by Sergeant JG Mather, who was awarded the Military Medal, became the subject of one of the Corps’ paintings, CONTACT WAIT OUT, by Peter Archer. 30 Signal Regiment put up a Communications Centre at the staging post on Ascension Island and Royal Signals detachments provided Rear Link communications from most fighting units. By 1st June 1982, 5 Infantry Brigade HQ and Signal Squadron had landed at St Carlos using mainly CLANSMAN radios. 30 Signal Regiment, with detachments from 1 and 19 Infantry Brigade Signal Squadrons, formed a unit to support the Land Forces HQ. 50 Signallers ran 15 nets on HMS FEARLESS which was the Main Force HQ. 30 Signal Regiment also provided satellite communications back to UK and secure telegraph for two Brigades. The satellite detachments are pictured on the cover of The Vital Link - The Official Corps History. SOME OF THE CAPTURED EQUIPMENT FROM THE WAR The Museum displays include a range of captured Argentinean military equipment including Radioset TRC300-4, Transceiver Radio RT3600, DATOTEK encryption equipment and weaponry.

    Falklands/Malvinas War
The Falklands War was by far the largest and most extended series of naval battles since the Pacific campaign in World War II. Designated Operation CORPORATE by the British, the five month war included the world's most significant amphibious operations since the Inchon landings in 1950, a logistics pipeline of over 7000 miles, and a winter combat arena 3300 miles from the nearest friendly base at Ascension Island. Argentina's claim on the Falklands (which it calls the Malvinas Islands) was based on sheer proximity to Argentina's mainland and its purported “inheritance” of sovereignty from the failed 1810 Spanish government. This claim had great emotional significance for the Argentinean public, and had been part of public school history curricula for generations. The actual motivation for Argentina's April 1982 invasion was a more immediate threat to General Leopoldo Galtieri’s ruling military junta: internal instability in Argentina threatened to topple his dictatorship. Galtieri needed a uniting diversion, an outside conflict to distract the public and maintain domestic control. On 19 March 1982, Argentina initiated the conflict by landing 30 scrap metal salvagers on South Georgia Island and raising the Argentinean flag. The next day, HMS Endurance was dispatched from Stanley with half the Falklands garrison embarked -— 22 Royal Marines and one lieutenant. They were under orders to deport the salvagers back to Argentina. Endurance arrived on 23 March and landed the Royal Marines. On 26 March, 100 Argentinean troops arrived by sea, purportedly to defend the salvagers. The outnumbered British force observed the troops until 03 April, when the Royal Marines on South Georgia surrendered after the fall of Stanley. This Argentinean diversion on South Georgia achieved surprise, and provided a pretext for the 02 April invasion of East Falkland Island and the capture of Stanley. Additional Argentinean reinforcements arrived steadily, and within 24 hours over 4000 Argentinean troops were on the islands.

UK Chief of the Air Staff flies Argentinean aircraft 20 years on
20 years after flying Harriers in the Falklands War, the UK Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Peter Squire has just concluded a visit to Argentina. Sir Peter met with his Argentinean counterpart, General Walter Barbero. 20 years ago, they were on opposite sides of the conflict. Sir Peter was a Harrier pilot commanding the RAF's No 1 Squadron, whilst General Barbero was flying Boeing 707 reconnaissance planes that "spied" on the British fleet. The meeting of the two chiefs is the first time they have met although they both flew on opposite sides in the Falklands War. The former opponents are now very much colleagues and part of the aim of the visit to Argentina was to build further, the relationship between the two countries. Talking about the possibility that he may have been in a position to have shot General Barbero down, Sir Peter Squire said: "It would not have been personal. We had great respect for our opposite numbers in the Argentinean Air Force. We thought they flew with great courage and skill".

    HISTORY
The Lodge gratefully acknowledge Ms Pam McIlroy's assistance in preparing the following text. The building now known as The Burgh Lodge appears to have originally been two separate properties, according to early records in the legal documents of the 18th and 19th centuries. By a disposition of 17th March 1749 Robert Young, a weaver of Newbigging, sold certain subjects in Falkland to John Lawson, a merchant of Falkland. In 1802 John Lawson sold the property to William Gulland, a surgeon of Falkland, and by 1847 after passing through various members of the Gulland Family the owner was Dr. William Gulland a physician and surgeon in the Royal Navy. Concurrently with the above transactions by a disposition of 5th March 1746 Robert Brydie, a Baillie of Falkland, coveyed cerain property to his son George. By 1863 after several changes of ownership this porperty beonged to Walter Lamond, a plasterer of Falkland. Another member of the Gulland family, William, a lawyer, acquired this property from Walter Lamond in 1880, confirmed by Sasine registration on 30th April of that year. The Guland family therefore now owned two properties in the Back Wynd which together, by 1899, were in the possession of Charles Gulland, Writer of Falkland, and his wife Mary. On 25th May 1920 Mrs. Mary Gulland, the widow of Charles sold the properties acquired by earlier members of the Gulland family to the Falkland War Memorial Committee.
