Introduction
The Falkland Islands are a group of islands in the south Atlantic. The two main islands, East Falkland and West Falkland, lie 300 miles [480 km] east of the Argentina coast. About 200 smaller islands form a total land area of approximately 4,700 square miles (12,200 square km). The capital and only town is (Port) Stanley. The government of the Falkland Islands administers the British dependent territories of South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands, and the Shag and Clerke rocks, lying from 700 to 2,000 miles (1,100 to 3,200 km) to the east and southeast of the Falklands. The total population of the islands in 1991 was estimated at 2100.
Argentina has claimed the islands since 1820. Britain had occupied and administered the islands since 1833 and had consistently rejected Argentina's claims. The Falklands War , chronicled below, started after Argentina invaded and took control of the islands in April 1982. During the war, the British captured about 10,000 Argentine prisoners, all of whom were released afterwards. Argentina sustained 655 men killed, while Britain lost 236. Argentina's ignominious defeat severely discredited the military government and led to the restoration of civilian rule in Argentina in 1983.

Aside from the land battles, most of the war is fought between Argentine aircraft and the British ships and carrier-borne Harriers. Argentine losses are heavy, but so is the Royal Navy's, and only the hit on "Glamorgan" by a land-based Exocet at the end of the war is not due to aircraft. Just before the San Carlos landings, this is a useful point to summarise the main Argentine aircraft involved and the losses they sustain, as well as inflict. LIFE Through a montage of interviews, music and archive newsreel footage, When Britain Went to War relives the days in 1982 when a task force was dispatched to fight for the return of the Falkland Islands from Argentinian invaders. Scarred by inner city riots, unemployment and the aggressive policies of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the UK was ill at ease with itself. Although few people had heard of the Falkland Islands, Thatcher tapped into a vein of patriotism for the grand old days of the Empire. Even with British influence shrunk to a number of tiny South Atlantic and Caribbean island territories, the principle of sovereignty was paramount.

Thereafter three firsts are generally accepted - Capt John Davis makes the first British sighting in , Dutchman Sebald de Weert first accurately plots the westerly Jason Islands in , and the first British landing is made in on the north coast by Capt John Strong who names Falkland Sound after Lord Falkland of the Admiralty. Spanish Control - The Treaty of Utrecht confirms Spain's continued control of her traditional territories in the Americas, including the offshore islands, but by now the French, many from St. Malo are visiting the islands from which they receive the name Les Iles Malouines, subsequently the Spanish Islas Malvinas. In the 's, Admiral Lord Anson, back from his voyage around the world recommends them as a naval base because of their strategic position near Cape Horn.

20. Falklands War: Causes
It is very easy to point at the falkland Islands sovereignty and assumethat the war was inevitable, but history is rarely so simple.
http://www.freenetpages.co.uk/hp/cmackenzie/website/cause.htm
The Causes of The Falklands War It is very easy to point at the Falkland Islands sovereignty and assume that the war was inevitable, but history is rarely so simple. After all the sovereignty issue between Britain and Argentina had been running for over 150 years and had not resulted in war until 1982. Perhaps then the real question about the cause of the war should be why 1982? Why after 150 years of non-violence did Argentina decide that force was the answer? 1) That any invasion would be successful against such a small military force; 2)That although Britain would be annoyed it would have neither the resources nor the political will to fight for a group of islands, with no strategic or economic value; 3)That the UN (and in particular the United States) would not intervene; It is clear then that the Falklands War was inevitable after 1981 and the coup which brought the Junta to power. What is also clear is that circumstances on the ground led to the invasion being moved forward, which fatally surrendered the initiative over to the British, in that they could counterattack before the winter and by expelling the Argentineans before winter ensure that their victory was complete by not having to negotiate and possibly give concessions. If the Junta intended the Falklands invasion to settle the issue, they in fact succeeded but only in the complete reverse. Negotiations on the islands future, painfully slow before the conflict, were now suspended permeantly. There could be no handover from London now British blood had been sacrificed. In this regard the overriding cause can be seen as Argentine frustration, but the war would see this frustration replaced by the humiliation of surrender and the ignominy of defeat.
