History of the Fair
Postcards from the Past S hortly after the discovery of gold, the state’s first daily newspaper Alta California encouraged the formation of an agricultural society to enhance the State’s reputation as an ideal place for farming and industry. Eager to meet that challenge, the California legislature created the State Agricultural Society in 1852. Eighty enthusiastic individuals signed up to be part of the initial effort to plan an agricultural exposition. In 1854 the first California State Fair was held in the city of San Francisco. T ravel was a hardship for many in those days so organizers arranged for the Fair to move locations each year. Sacramento, San Jose, Stockton and Marysville hosted the Fair for the subsequent four years. Pioneer residents quickly recognized tremendous riches in the fertile soil and agriculture, California’s number one industry, was born. The Fair was the yearly source of entertainment and education for early settlers, drawing huge crowds of as many as 15,000 on a single day. W hen the Fair did return to Sacramento in 1859, a decision was made to find a permanent home. Sacramento was a bustling city with more than 2,500 buildings and a newly installed water system using two and a half miles of pipe. Six square blocks between E and H Streets from 20

Rydell, Findling, and Pelle do a wonderful job of describing the influences that helped shape the Worlds Fairs and expositions held in the United States between 1853 and 1984. Initially designed to boost local economies, the fair promoters gradually shifted to more national agendas; imperialism, cold war, and capitalism. The book is a great resource for those not aware of how much impact these fairs have had on our countrys development!

Chicago, the phonograph, and the Fair
(April 1993) "As they entered the Manufacturers and Liberal Arts building through one of the many small entrances on the north, the greatness of that more than forty-four acres of exhibits did not impress itself upon them. The first objects that me their gaze were the graphophones or phonographs." From a contemporary account, The Adventures of Uncle Jeremiah and Family at the Great Fair, Chicago, 1893. (Courtesy APM Press)
I t was the grandest Fair of all time. 1993 commemorates the 100th anniversary of the World's Columbian Exposition, which itself commemorated the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the New World. The site appropriately was Chicago, a heartland city of one and a quarter million souls, risen from its own ashes of 1871. Chicago dedicated Jackson Park, a 526 acre lake front site seven miles south of the Loop. Native architect Daniel Burnham conceived an immense, neo-classical vision on a wooded island surrounded by lagoons. There was a statue of the Republic at one end, the Columbian Fountain at the other. One structure, the Manufactures Building, was boasted as the largest ever erected, over 30 acres. Gondoliers imported directly from Venice patrolled the lagoons. Because of its color and because of the use of "staff," a plaster-like material, this section of the Fair was known as the White City.

From 1885 to 1915, the Liberty Bell traveled coast to coast and brought its hope of unity and patriotism to hundreds of thousands of citizens that may never have been able to visit Philadelphia. These road trips greatly increased the Liberty Bell's popularity. The Liberty Bell's trip to San Diego by way of San Francisco in 1915 was its last outside of Philadelphia. Since that time the Liberty Bell has been moved only three times within the city of Philadelphia. It was featured in two parades during the Liberty Loan drives of 1917 and 1918 and then it was moved in 1976 from Independence Hall to its new pavilion across the street on Independence Mall.
