History

Founded by a group of Shreveport’s leading citizens in 1906, the State Fair of Louisiana will celebrate 100 years in 2006. The founders’ primary interests were to provide an institution to assist in developing the agricultural and industrial resources of the area and for the betterment of the citizens.
The State Fair of Louisiana, though it is located in Shreveport, and is the official Fair for the State of Louisiana, has no formal ties to either the City or State. It is a private, not-for-profit membership organization whose members represent a broad cross-section of Louisiana citizens, who have exhibited interest in the goals and objectives of the Fair. The Fair is governed by a Board of Directors, elected from the membership. Fair operations are directed by the President and General Manager, assisted by a full-time staff; as well as hundreds of volunteers.
Location
The State Fair of Louisiana is situated on approximately 157 acres and is located just off Interstate 20, with access from Jewella and Hearne Avenues. The Fairgrounds are located about three miles west of downtown Shreveport. (click here for map) Fairgrounds Although it is one of the state’s largest single attractions and the State Fair of Louisiana's largest fundraiser, staging the annual exposition is but one of the many activities held on the Fairgrounds. The Fairgrounds facilities, including the 10,300 seat Hirsch Memorial Coliseum, are used weekly for a multitude of “off-season” functions, such as musical concerts, hockey games and other ice events, sporting events, livestock shows, rodeos and motor coach rallies.

All the Worlds a Fair: Visions of Empire at American International Expositions, 1876-1916 > Customer Review #1: Worlds Fairs and the Leisure Class

Robert W. Rydells book, All the Worlds a Fair: Visions of Empire at American International Expositions, 1876-1916 is far different a study than Roy Rosenzweigs, yet it offers some interesting insights into how the moneyed leisure class still indulged in luxuries of their own. Rydell writes that the impetus behind worlds fairs was to boost the economy while maintaining an American authority over the displays. Just as saloons and amusement parks were necessary for Americas working class, the Worlds Fairs were designed for the leisure class.
The world fairs of 1876-1916 betrayed a much more sinister agenda. Ideas of American progressed became related to scientific racism. The widening concern over immigration by the leisure class eventually promoted eugenicist ideas about the hierarchy of white populations.

One of the greatest of the World's Fairs of the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries was held in St. Louis in 1904. The Fair's organizers intended the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, as it was also called, to be educational. David Francis, president of the Fair, noted, "So thoroughly does it represent the world's civilization that if all man's other works were by some unspeakable catastrophe, blotted out, the records here established by the assembled nations would offer all necessary standards for the rebuilding of our entire civilization." Taking place just six years after the US acquired a colonial empire at the end of the Spanish-American War, the Fair's centerpiece was the Philippine Reservation, visited by nearly all of the 19 million people who attended the Fair.
Philippine Scouts (NARA) The US government sponsored the Reservation in hopes of justifying its decision to keep the Philippines in a colonial relationship. Government officials wanted to show that, unlike other colonial powers, the US was not exploiting its colonies but rather selflessly bringing civilization and progress to them. By showing that the Filipinos were not yet ready for independence but would make rapid progress under American rule, the government hoped to quiet the many critics of US imperialism.

In 1901 the Bostock-Ferari Midway Carnival Company presented a huge wild animal show, plus other attractions, at the Pan-American Exposition at Buffalo, New York. DAVE PAGE waded through the huge amount of information available on this event and got to the heart of what Frank Bostock was really doing in America.
Until the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, or to use its correct title "World's Columbian Exposition", the term "Midway" was unheard of, but this event was the key that opened the door to the business of amusing large numbers of people for profit in the United States. After Chicago Expositions became all the rage and spawned a new type of showman - the concessionaire. Running these shows almost became a profession in its own right and they were staged so frequently during this period that some concessionaires had almost continuous employment for their entire careers. Expositions were gigantic lavish events all about trends, developments, innovations and attitudes. They needed huge temporary cities to accommodate them that took years to plan and build and months to remove afterwards. The 1901 Pan-American Exposition at Buffalo, New York, was just such an event. Its huge colourful buildings along its own grand canal were offset by lakes with their electric fountains, triumphal bridges, open spaces and bandstands. Meanwhile, an "Electric Tower" announced America's technical superiority - and there were buildings dedicated to agriculture, machinery, transport, manufacturing, art and music.

American international expositions, like their counterparts in other countries, trace their origins to London's 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition, the first world's fair. And like it, America's expositions drew on and reshaped an earlier tradition of agricultural and mechanical fairs. Equally important to the promotion of a vision of American progress were displays of nonwhite people, frequently arranged by anthropologists from the Smithsonian Institution and universities. These so-called living ethnological exhibits of Africans, Asians, and American Indians, often arranged along exposition midways, introduced millions of Americans to Darwinian ideas about racial advance and lent legitimacy to the imperial ambitions of exposition organizers. St. Louis fair authorities, for instance, organized twelve hundred Filipinos into a "Philippines Reservation" that was intended to promote American colonial policies in that nation. Set against the backdrop of temporary but palatial "white cities" constructed on the main exposition grounds, these exhibits underscored the racist nature of turn-of-the-century American society. When the First World War caused many Americans to call into question the ideas of progress and of science and technology acting as guarantors of the nation's future, industrialists and scientists launched a cultural offensive with a new generation of world's fairs. Just as the 1926 Philadelphia Sesquicentennial Exposition was faltering owing to the failure of many exhibitors to have their displays ready for opening day, business leaders in Chicago decided to organize a fair to commemorate the centennial birth of their city and turned to the National Research Council for scientific expertise in formulating a philosophy for their exposition.

    Centennial Exposition
International Cotton Exposition Exposition Universelle Internationale Jamaica Exposition ... Panama California Exposition W orld's fairs and expositions held in the United States and abroad in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries celebrated the past while introducing visions of the future. Both the past and the future were highly idealized, almost utopian. The World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893 presented what Catholic World proclaimed was a "city of realized dreams." Discussing the same exposition, Frederick Douglass stated that "the spirit of American caste made itself conspicuously felt against the educated American negro, and to this extent, the Exposition was made simply an American Exposition and that in one of America's most illiberal features." Conflicts over representation at the fairs whose dreams were realized were common but changes were made slowly if at all in an era when Jim Crow segregation laws were being established throughout the South, women did not have the right to vote, and the American empire was extended from the Caribbean to Asia. Displays of Filipinos as "primitive peoples" were among the most popular attractions at later fairs. During Philippine Day activities at the Panama Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915, Philippine Resident Commissioner Manuel L. Quezon referred to the lasting effect of those displays: "I have traveled to every part of the United States and I have been saddened to learn how many misapprehensions exist here as to the real conditions in the Philippine Islands; due, probably as much as anything else, to the exhibition of the native Igorote village at the St. Louis Exposition ten years ago."
