The Best Children's Literature
(On The Net) Purpose: The compilation of links to available texts of the best works
of literature for children and young adults (two separate sections) on the Net. Because we all know very adult six-year-olds and very childish teenagers
I have forgone age specific reading suggestions. Suffice it to say that
you will find in the "children" section those works which might either be read
to a younger child or which a younger child might read on his or her own; while
the "young adult" section contains mostly those works which might present
some difficulties for the youngest readers.
This compilation will be an ongoing project from now on; and, naturally, your
help will always be greatly appreciated: If you know of an excellent work
for children or young adults, please let us know about itIf we judge it to be worthy of inclusion in this page we will most certainly include it. (Please be sure, first, that the text is either in the public domain or its author has given permission for it to be on the Net.) Also, if you find that any of the links on this page are down, we

Fables and Fairy Tales, by Leo Tolstoy
Yeah, ok, it's Leo Tolstoy. It wasn't really what I expected. These are more like fables than fairy tales, and they lose something in the translation. Read it for a glimpse of Russian life, for an amusing brush with socialist rhetoric directed at young children. It's a fast read and an intriguing peek into life in the ussr. TrackBack

As a teacher, I have found a tremendous amount of literature activities for the elementary classroom on the internet. I decided to share the results of my internet search with you.I created this web page to share what I have found. It is full of literature activities.
Some of the titles have more than one link listed. All of the links are different.Check out the grade above and below the one you are looking at, too!
Please Note: The links which originate from AOL, will not work on other browsers. You will get an error message. If you find a link you think will benefit your class, ask a friend with AOL to copy it for you.

O nce upon a time there was a poor widow who lived in a lonely cottage. In front of the cottage was a garden wherein stood two rose trees, one of which bore white and the other red roses. She had two children who were like the two rose trees, and one was called Snow-White, and the other Rose-Red. They were as good and happy, as busy and cheerful as ever two children in the world were, only Snow-White was more quiet and gentle than Rose-Red. Rose-Red liked better to run about in the meadows and fields seeking flowers and catching butterflies, but Snow-white sat at home with her mother, and helped her with her housework, or read to her when there was nothing to do. The two children were so fond of one another that they always held each other by the hand when they went out together, and when Snow-White said, we will not leave each other, Rose-Red answered, never so long as we live, and their mother would add, what one has she must share with the other.

Comics for Christmas by JULIET WATERS
This pull-out board game designed by graphic novelist Chris Ware bears a very slight resemblance to that old standard, the Game of Life. Except that the pit-stops are places like Jack's Beanstalk strip club, The Enchanted Forest planned community and The Princess Pea's Natural Shoppe. The goal of this game is to complete a story board with chits that allow you to make up a fairy tale as you go and then invent a moral at the end.
As explained in the instructions: "The smart child will note that each storyboard is arrayed with a number of blank circles, and that these circles are coloured in a corresponding manner with 70 little circular 'chits'... The smarter child will note that the game board is coloured with an exactly matching assortment of shades, as well. The smartest of all children will then deduce that, due to the similarity of these colours, some sort of relationship exists between the playing pieces, the spaces on the board, and the spaces on the storyboards. This child should be immediately excused from play and signed up for top-level government service, as he or she is obviously more gifted than the adults who currently hold such positions."
Sadly, by the time that child opens this book, let's say as a Christmas present, he will have missed his chance to become an election officer in Florida. But by playing "Fairy Tale Road Rage" he can still learn a lot about absurdity, moral relativism and the often-random art of storytelling by reading and re-reading this uniquely fabulous collection of stories by some of the best North American adult comic artists and illustrators.
