13763 Hwy. 903 - PO Box 37 - Halifax, NC 27839 - 252-583-1821 Our History The 4-H Rural Life Center was originally built by Halifax County in 1923 to be used as the County Home. In the mid 1950's, it was changed to a rest home where it remained in use until the early 1970's. Once the rest home closed, the center remained vacant until the early to mid 1980's when the Cooperative Extension Service decided to make it their 4-H Camp. After much work and renovation, it is today the 4-H Rural Life Center. Bringing People Together The 4-H Rural Life Center is used year round, under the leadership of Director Joe Long , a 1986 graduate of The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and a 1982 graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School. Programming includes the Summer 4-H and Youth Day Camp, Halifax County Harvest Days, rodeos, Senior Citizens Day Camp, Pre-School Nutrition Camps, Seminars on Civil War History, craft classes, and cooking classes, just to name a few. The purpose of this programming is to bring the citizens, youth and adults, of Halifax County together to enhance, enlighten, and educate their everyday lives. Funding for the Center is provided through a cooperative effort between the Halifax County Commissioners, Cooperative Extension Service, local businesses and volunteers. Welcome to Cabernet Creek Farms home of "vintage quality" llamas. A small, select operation, Cabernet Creek specializes in producing llamas with superb dispositions and great conformation. Cabernet Creek Llamas can be found nestled in the shadow of magnificent Mt. Hood. Whether for fiber, packing, guardians, or just as a companion, our llamas are bred to be structurally correct, reproductively sound, and of excellent disposition. By utilizing the best of both the North and South American bloodlines, we are able to produce outstanding out-crosses and maximize hybrid vigor. All crias are desensitized according to the Mallon Method at birth and weaned at between 5-6 months of age. Our studs are carefully selected and then paired with appropriate females to optimize the best features of both parents. All llamas are sold with full reproductive guarantees unless otherwise specified, with only our most outstanding males sold as future herdsires. Rigorous health programs, which include worming, vaccinations, and vitamin supplements, are implemented year-round. Having ample acreage allows for optimum physical and emotional development of the young llamas. Having a somewhat small herd, we are able to carefully manage our breeding program. We have a very select group of llamas available for sale at any time, including:

The 2003 National 4-H Congress
Atlanta Hyatt Regency
November 28-December 2, 2003 National 4-H Congress is the flagship event of the 4-H program. For seventy-nine years, youth from the United States and its territories have participated in this youth leadership development conference. The Congress provides youth, ages 14-19, a quality, educational, and cross-cultural experience that exceeds what any state independently provides. It is designed to address the needs and issues of youth while helping to develop capable, competent, and caring citizens. The program is built upon the Cooperative Extension System's belief that young people can be significant partners in addressing the issues that face our nation especially those affecting youth. Each year a National Design Team of Extension educators, 4-H youth, and 4-H adult volunteers analyze current youth issues and determine the most effective ways to address them. The program combines plenary sessions, seminars, discussion groups, and a service learning experience. The nation's most outstanding community leaders, speakers, and educators present the most current and timely information available. Click on the link to the left to find out more about this exciting community service project.
