T he National Museum of Natural History receives numerous requests for information on endangered species. This pamphlet, listing references on vertebrates and citing additional sources of information, has been compiled as a public service. The prime governmental source for information on this subject is the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Division of Endangered Species, 1849 C Street, N.W., Mail Stop 452, ARLSQ., Washington, DC 20240. See site http://endangered.fws.gov/ The suggested reference list is divided into eight sections. The publications listed are not available from the Smithsonian Institution but may be obtained from most large public libraries or can be requested through an interlibrary loan. Many are currently in print and can be ordered from local bookstores. GENERAL In this section, you will find citations for publications that cover the broad spectrum of rare wildlife and wildlife conservation in various parts of the world. REGIONAL This section includes a representative sampling of state and regional publications that provide species accounts and/or status reports.

Threatened Species and Threatened Ecological Communities
Australia is home to more than one million species, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. About 85 per cent of flowering plants, 84 per cent of mammals, more than 45 per cent of birds, and 89 per cent of inshore, temperate-zone fish are endemic - that is they are only found in Australia. Changes to the landscape and native habitat as a result of human activity has put many of these unique species at risk. Over the last two hundred years many species of plants and animals have become extinct. For the other species of plants and animals whose survival is threatened a range of management and conservation measures are in place. The Australian Government is working in partnership with state, territory and local governments, non-government organisations, tertiary institutions and community groups to ensure the protection of our native species. The Australian Government mechanism for national environment protection and biodiversity conservation is the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). The EPBC Act provides for:

Information to describe these records has been gathered from museums, institutions and personal collections then entered into the Pennsylvania Natural Diversity Inventory (PNDI). In some cases, current field surveys have found these historically known locations to have been lost to habitat destruction. Although historical records may not completely reflect the known range of a particular species, they are the best documentation available to estimate the former distribution. Red areas represent species locations that are known to exist today. Many of these sites were found based on directions given in historical records, others were found by looking for species in appropriate habitats. Species ranges were identified using the PNDI information system.

    Endangered and Threatened Species
What Are Endangered and Threatened Species?
A century ago, a bird called the passenger pigeon lived in North America. There were so many passenger pigeons that people often saw great flocks of them flying overhead containing thousands, even millions, of birds. Today, there is not a single one left. What happened?
The passenger pigeon became extinct . All living passenger pigeons disappeared from the earth entirely. The passenger pigeon became extinct for two reasons. First, the forests where it lived were cut down to make way for farms and cities. Second, many pigeons were shot for sport and because they were good to eat. At that time, there were no hunting laws to protect endangered species like there are now.
The passenger pigeon is one of the many plants and animals that once lived on our planet and have become extinct. For example, dinosaurs, mammoths, and saber-toothed tigers all became extinct long ago. More recently, the dodo bird and the sea mink also have disappeared. Extinction has been going on since life began on earth. But today, extinction is happening faster than ever before.

    Threatened and Endangered Species
What are Threatened and Endangered Species? Species is a Latin word meaning "kind" or "appearance." Scientists classify living organisms into separate species based upon their physical form and the potential to interbreed and produce viable, fertile offspring. Consider horses and donkeys. While they can mate and produce offspring (mules), their offspring are sterile and cannot reproduce. Horses and donkeys are therefore separate species. Extinct - a species that is no longer living or in existence. Endangered - a species that is in immediate danger of becoming extinct and needs protection to survive. Threatened - a species that is likely to become endangered if it is not protected.

Many species of animals are disappearing from our planet. Extinct means that the entire species has died out and can never return. Endangered animals are those in immediate danger of becoming extinct. Threatened species are likely to become endangered in the future. There are 1,072 endangered and threatened species in the world. The list includes:
    • 342 species of mammals, such as the red wolf, the right whale and the mountain gorilla 273 species of birds, such as the California condor, the whooping crane and the northern spotted owl 126 species of fish, such as coho salmon 115 species of reptiles, such as the green sea turtle

Fax: 202-682-1331 What is the Endangered Species Act? The Endangered Species Act (ESA) was passed in 1973 in order to protect those plant and animal species that are at risk of becoming extinct. Species that receive protection under the ESA are classified into two categories, "Endangered" or "Threatened," depending on their status (how many are left in the wild) and how severely their survival is threatened. A species that is listed as Endangered is in danger of becoming extinct throughout a significant portion of its habitat range (the areas where it lives). Threatened species are those that are likely to become Endangered in the foreseeable future. How does a species get "listed?" How are listed species protected? The Endangered Species Act outlines a number of protective measures that are designed to preserve species that have been listed as Endangered or Threatened. These measures include restrictions on hunting, transporting and trading (buying and selling) the species. Also, the USFWS is authorized to develop recovery plans for Endangered and Threatened species, which outline the steps that need to be taken for the species to recover and eventually be removed from the ESA. How many species are protected by the Endangered Species Act?
