"There are bad dreams for those who sleep unwisely." So begins Dracula Opening Night , and finished on video, not celluloid, it remains the first feature film directed by Guy Maddin in six years. That Maddin, who has tried (and often failed) to maintain a level of artistic freedom, could immerse himself in the project-for-hire, and deliver a Dracula that is compulsively (or is it impulsively?) watchable, is cause for celebration. Though the period of feature-film inactivity was just as long between Careful (1992) and Twilight of the Ice Nymphs (1997), the years that followed can be seen as a long, waking nightmare for the lone-wolf director. With The Heart of the World (2000), he woke up from the dormancy, and the rest of the Canadian film establishment finally took notice. The adrenaline shot of the masterpiece The Heart of the World Beau travail (1999) and Moulin Rouge (2001) can be considered dance films

Biographies Eiko (female) and Koma (male) were law and political science students in Japan when, in 1971, they each joined the Tatsumi Hijikata company in Tokyo. Their initially experimental collaboration soon developed into an exclusive partnership. The following year, Eiko and Koma started working as independent artists in Tokyo. At the same time, they began to study with Kazuo Ohno, who along with Hijikata was the central figure in the Japanese avant-garde theatrical movement of the 1960s. Neither Eiko nor Koma have studied traditional Japanese dance or theater forms; they have preferred to choreograph and perform only their own works. Their interest in Neue Tanz, the German modern dance movement which flourished alongside the Bauhaus movement in art and architecture, and their desire to explore nonverbal theater took them to Hanover, Germany in 1972. There they studied with Manja Chmiel, a disciple of Mary Wigman, a pioneer of German Expressionism in dance. In 1973, they moved to Amsterdam, and for the next two years toured extensively in Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Tunisia. It was the late Lucas Hoving, a wonderful dancer who had toured with the early Jose Limon Dance Company, who suggested that they go to America. Their first American performance

Martha Graham Dance Company - Reflections of a Post-Modern Dancer

February 3, 2002 Potemkin , I will never see Graham dance Lamentation and I will rarely get to see her company in its current post-Graham era. So when I finally laid eyes on those muscle bound, grief stricken bodies, I was swelling with anticipation. What I saw was everything I had hoped for, but I was also incredulous; So this is what the fuss is all about? Although I was raised on Graham, the choreography that has inspired me is the new cutting edge, which continues to reject what Graham stood for. I in no way deny that Graham was one of the major artists of the twentieth century. I am simply noting what happens to a student when the good part of her education is predicated on the work of one woman, while the work itself, because of the nature of dance, remains almost entirely absent from her study. Phaedra was the most traditionally theatrical of the four works on the program. The program notes declare that the piece is about "unbridled desire", and no one does desire like Graham. Although I do not identify with its characters the way I might in a film or play, its depiction of exaggerated egos entangling themselves with their archetypal emotions is almost comic at the same time that it is tragic. Christine Dakin portrays the tormented heroine with as much expertise as one could hope for. Miki Orihara is a charismatic and evil Aphrodite. I wanted her to fall off her circular flat, from which she suspends herself, while at the same time I could not take my eyes off of her delightful scheming.

While we often think of the beginnings of modern dance as an American phenomenon, Germany had its own very active movement. Experimental choreographers, including Rudolf von Laban, Mary Wigman and Vera Skoronel, spearheaded the German rebellion against the formalism of classical dance. Though she only lived to age 23, Skoronel opened a dance studio and formed her dance group in Berlin, helping to lay the foundation for her peers. These iconoclastic artists created Ausdruckstanz (also called New Dance), influenced by the drama and expressionism of contemporary visual artists Wassily Kandinsky, Emil Nolde, Oskar Kokoschka and others.

    Kirchner's tapestry
The expressionist as painter, sculptor - and more. HANS VARGHESE MATHEWS
ERNST LUDWIG KIRCHNER's would be one of the best known names among the painters who are called expressionists, and anyone with an interest in 20th century art is likely to have come across his work somewhere. A history of Expressionism would have to give him a deal of room on account of the painting alone, certainly; but his sculpture in wood interests the eye as much as the painting does, nowadays at least, and though that may be due to the relative dearth of sculpture one would want to call expressionist, the fact is worth noting. It is not entirely surprising that Kirchner should have carved well, of course; a serious study of his work would have to talk about how the woodcut print shaped the painting - especially since Kirchner used the medium himself - and one can see that it did do so when a work like The Street of 1908 is set next to the more characteristic Women in the Street of 1915. The fact remains, though, that Kirchner is known as a painter; and the career of the epithet "expressionist" in talk about 20th century visual art has made it seem as if painting best serves the impulses behind the work labelled so (whatever those impulses may be). Now, from the look of the painting one hardly expects that an expressionist painter will take to designing tapestry: and if what one most easily recognises as Kirchner's work is the painting done in the three or four years preceding the First World War, it will seem very surprising that he should have done so.

How to use the Internet for searching for visual arts information
    Introduction

Searching on the Net can be a frustrating business: you know roughly what you're trying to find but somehow useful results seem to elude you. So how can you make your searches on the Web more effective and just as important how can you gain an idea that you are accessing quality information ? This article tries to give you a common sense approach to searching on the Net and some suggestions of what to do in the case of complex searches, for instance for academic or research purposes.
    Getting Your Search Right
There are a large collection of search engines available but how to choose the right one for you? One approach is to go to a site with a large collection of these and try queries in them and see which ones give you satisfactory results. Because search engines use different approaches to finding webpages and because some search only the web address for a term whilst others search the whole file, results can vary from one search engine to another and finding the right one is to some degree based on your experience of searching and personal preference. Try some basic searches in the following and see which suit you best:
