Expressionism
Edvard Munch

(Norwegian, 1863-1944) The Scream (African, 1800s) Puberty
Munch (pronounced Muenk) was a Norwegian painter and printmaker whose intensely psychological and emotional themes was a major influence on the development of German Expressionism in the early 20th century. His painting The Scream is regarded as an icon of the existential anguish of the post-industrial modern age. It may have been partly inspired by the raw quality of African tribal art (the early 20th century was the first time the public saw such works in art museums). Munch tended to focus on intense emotions, such as those expressed in Puberty , which presents the fearful period of a girl's life as she faces the uncomfortable transition of becoming a woman.
Death in the Sickroom The Dance of Life
The troubling nature of many of Munch's works can be partly explained by events of his early childhood, as well as the overly religious (and repressive) society in which he lived. Raised in Norway (which is dark and cold throughout much of the year), his mother died of tuberculosis when he was only five. Later, after developing a close attachment to his sister, she suffered the same fate. Art was, for Munch, a way to express his emotions of grief. Throughout his life he was also known to be obsessed with women, though he was never to marry. The Dance of Life focuses on the changing nature of woman as she matures from innocence into full sexuality, and then to old age - where she is again regarded as non-sexual.

document.write(getTableBegin('Http://www.artistportfolio.net/images/bar16_gg.gif','Art Movements','valign=top height=200')) EXPRESSIONISM KEY DATES: 1905-1925 A term used to denote the use of distortion and exaggeration for emotional effect, which first surfaced in the art literature of the early twentieth century. When applied in a stylistic sense, with reference in particular to the use of intense colour, agitated brushstrokes, and disjointed space. Rather than a single style, it was a climate that affected not only the fine arts but also dance, cinema, literature and the theatre. Expressionism is an artistic style in which the artist attempts to depict not objective reality but rather the subjective emotions and responses that objects and events arouse in him. He accomplishes his aim through distortion, exaggeration, primitivism, and fantasy and through the vivid, jarring, violent, or dynamic application of formal elements. In a broader sense Expressionism is one of the main currents of art in the later 19th and the 20th centuries, and its qualities of highly subjective, personal, spontaneous self-expression are typical of a wide range of modern artists and art movements. Unlike Impressionism, its goals were not to reproduce the impression suggested by the surrounding world, but to strongly impose the artist's own sensibility to the world's representation. The expressionist artist substitutes to the visual object reality his own image of this object, which he feels as an accurate representation of its real meaning. The search of harmony and forms is not as important as trying to achieve the highest expression intensity, both from the aesthetic point of view and according to idea and human critics.

I revised it after the professor's critique. Here's the final product. Do not try to present this as your own report. Expressionism and Caligarisme
Despite the enormous attention given by film historians to Expressionism there are few films that might appropriately be classified as Expressionistic. Doctor Giesenfeld would limit the list to three: Von Morgens Bis Mitternachts Das Cabinet Des Dr. Caligari , and Genuine Some film historians such as Barry Salt would expand the list to include Torgus Raskolnikov Das Waxenfigurenkabinett , and, arguably, Metropolis . (199) Of course quite a few German films had elements that could be classified as Expressionistic. Nosferatu was a commercial horror film with Expressionistic design and acting. It can not be called purely Expressionist. But even limiting the list to

REVIEW: Translated through Google this page provides a biography of Mary Wigman, identifying her as being in the top 100 Dresdeners of the Century (the article is from Dresdner Neueste Nachrichten). Although it begins by discussing her great significance, it does not really engage with the importance of Wigman's avant garde approach. The translation is difficult to read, although this being only a biography, it suffices for general information. The page is perhaps worth perusing if only to discover that the author's name, Gabriele Gorgas has also suffered in translation, and she appears, somewhat unfortunately, as Gabriele fermenting gas.

Denishawn Dancers program. Katherine Dunham's Ballet Negre made its only appearance at the Beaux Arts Ball in Chicago. The attempt to create and sustain a Negro ballet company did not succeed. (The first Negro ballet performed European-style pantomimes at the African Grove Theater in New York City, in 1821, under the direction of James Hewlett. Dancers doubled as actors in plays by Shakespeare.)
White recitalists were still reacting to the 1930 police raid on recital halls, justified by an 1852 law supported by the New York Sabbath Committee, which stated "no performances on Sunday, including Negro or other dancing."
The Denishawn School came to an end. Ruth St. Denis began planning for her Temple School of Spiritual Art, and Ted Shawn envisioned an all-male dance company.
Dancers were divided in their thinking about the German movement in modern dance, and particularly about Mary Wigman. Doris Humphrey warned aspiring dancers about copying Wigman's style and urged them to concentrate on developing their own style. Martha Graham's "Primitive Mysteries" was hailed as a masterpiece of choreography. Helen Tamiris, one of the first white dancers to use black spirituals (1927), announced performances for the newly organized Modern Dance Repertory Company.
The Beginning: Hemsley Winfield and Edna Guy
An actor by profession, Hemsley Winfield appropriated the philosophy of the Harlem Renaissance with reference to developing a sensitivity about the depth and breadth of black culture and the role of the arts in projecting "the new Negro." Hemsley attended concerts by leaders in the American modern dance movement and created a style of choreography that was part German Expressionism, eclectic, and African American. As organizer and director of the Negro Art Theatre Dance, he had directed a small group of dancers as early as 1928 for appearances in plays written by his mother Jeroline. The decision to pursue a dance career resulted from his successful appearance as a substitute dancer in his company's production of Oscar Wilde's " Salome." The first appearance of his dance company, the Bronze Ballet Plastique, on March 6, 1931 in Yonkers, New York, was sponsored by the Benefit for Colored Citizens Unemployment Relief Committee. The event went unnoticed.
