    Redmond Fire Department
Redmond Fire Department Fire Explorer Post #007 Letter from Todd Anderson My name is Todd Anderson and I am the advisor for the Redmond Fire Department's Explorer Post. It has been the most challenging and fulfilling experience ever. I thought going into burning buildings and saving lives was difficult and exciting, then I became an advisor for 16 explorer scouts. My role as the advisor of the Redmond Fire Department Explorer Post is very simple: Provide a dynamic and challenging program that exposes the post members to a career in the fire service. This program is designed to be educational, exciting, team-oriented and rewarding.
In the fire service, safety is paramount. In the explorer post, safety is never compromised. Being mentally and physically prepared for the challenge at hand is how we do business safely in the fire service. This message, when implemented, will give each explorer a sense of pride, dignity, self worth and excellence. Being mentally and physically prepared will provide the foundation necessary for a personal character built for success.
The explorers of post #007 learn both the good and the bad of the fire service by letting each explorer experience what goes on behind the scenes. One of the most popular activities of the RFD explorers program is the Ride-Along program. Going on fire responses on the fire engine, or medical and rescue responses on the aid unit are obviously the highlight. It is also valuable for the explorer to see what the fire service is about when we are not running calls. This may consist of: Station maintenance, training, public education, code enforcement, report writing and yes, scrubbing toilets and mopping floors. Each explorer is never without something to learn because there is so much to do and experience.

    172. Antarctic Explorers: James Cook
Biography of the explorer with details of his Southern Ocean voyages.
    http://www.south-pole.com/p0000071.htm

    James Cook
James Cook was born in the Yorkshire village of Marton on October 27, 1728. His first experience at sea came at the age of 18 when he signed on as a deckhand aboard a Whitby collier carrying coal to London. He became an accomplished mathematician in his spare time and was actually offered a command of his own ship but refused and joined the Royal Navy as a seaman. His talents were soon recognized and after two years he became master of his own ship, the PEMBROKE , and was ordered to chart the waters of the St. Lawrence River in Canada. His work was masterful and the Admiralty recalled him to England and placed him in command of the ENDEAVOUR which was to take a number of scientists to the Pacific Ocean for observance of Venus. The ENDEAVOUR departed England in 1768 and after visiting Tahiti the following year he discovered New Zealand and claimed it for Great Britain. Sailing west, in 1770 he sighted the east coast of Australia. From here he sailed north and on August 22 he claimed the whole of eastern Australia as a British possession. The ENDEAVOUR returned to England in 1771 having added significantly to Britain's potential empire in the Pacific.

    180. Antarctic Explorers: Ernest Shackleton
Biography and detailed overview of Shackleton's expeditions.
    http://www.south-pole.com/p0000097.htm
    Ernest H. Shackleton
Until the age of eleven-and-a-half, Shackleton was educated at home by a governess. He then went to Fir Lodge Preparatory School, down the road from his home, Aberdeen House, in West Hill. In 1887 Ernest left Fir Lodge to go to Dulwich College. Henry desired for his son to enter the medical field but Ernest would have no part of it. Longing for the sea, Ernest left Dulwich at the end of the Lent term in 1890 and on April 19, at the age of sixteen, went to Liverpool and joined the full rigger HOGHTON TOWER , owned by the North Western Shipping Company of Liverpool. Ernest's first experience at sea belongs to sailor's folklore. The HOGHTON TOWER was bound for Valparaiso round Cape Horn. They reached Cape Horn in the middle of winter and fought against storms for nearly two months before finally rounding the Cape. Battered by the seas, the HOGHTON TOWER reached Valparaiso in the middle of August. From there she sailed for Iquique, Chile where for six weeks she loaded nitrates. The HOGHTON TOWER returned to Liverpool at the end of April, 1891, with food and water running out. It was a hard, difficult trip, especially for a sixteen-year-old old novice. Shackleton went on to spend five years sailing to and from the Far East and America. In 1896, without much difficulty, Shackleton passed for First Mate. In April 1898, he was certified as Master. At the age of twenty-four he had qualified to command a British ship anywhere on the seven seas.
