studyworld Champlain : One of the Great Explorers Samuel de Champlain discovered and rediscovered many locations in the New World. He was trained in seamanship, navigation and map making. Champlain wrote a book on how the Indians lived. The book had the best information about the Indians at that time. He made many voyages to the New World. Champlain was born in Brouage, France in 1567. Samuel went to war in Brittany when he was a young man. After the war he received a reward of money. He was given command of a small ship going to the West Indies. This voyage was the beginning of his adventures to the New World. After a long time of exploring he was nicknamed the "Father of New France". Champlain was helped by his uncle, a general of a fleet of the King of Spain, to get the command of the ship going to the West Indies. He first saw the New World under the Spanish flag. Champlain cruised the West Indies and along the coast of the main land from Panama to Mexico. He saw the ancient ruins of Mexico City. Champlain was the first to suggest digging a canal to connect the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean. He was asked by Aymar de Clermont, Governor of Dieppe to explore the St. Lawrence. The leader of the expedition was a merchant named Pontgrave. Aymar de Clermont equipped two ships that were slightly larger then a fishing boat. The ships entered the Strait of Belle Isle. As they traveled Champlain saw the ruins of Cartier's old fort at Tadoussac. He also saw Mt. Royal which Cartier named sixty years before. The Indian village of Hochelaga had disappeared, and there were only a few Algonquin Indians.

Idea
Discuss the effects of European exploration on the world's resources:
  • The Europeans desperately wanted two resources: spices and gold.
  • In pursuit of these resources, Europeans began exploring the coast of Africa and searching for a route to the Far East.
  • In time, efforts to find an inexpensive route to the Far East led explorers all around the world.
  • Along with gold and spices, the explorers found many other valuable resources. Unfortunately, they didn't always appreciate and take care of the things they found. Sometimes areas became overpopulated and the ecological balance was destroyed. Sometimes native people were killed for their gold or their land. Ask the class to name different resources found by the explorers. List them on the board: spices, gold, silver, land, forests and lumber, new fruits and vegetables, fish, plants, animals and furs, birds, rivers and waterways, Indian cultures, and so on. Print The Explorers' World of Resources activity sheet and make copies of the crossword puzzle for students. When students are finished, check the crossword together as a class. * To open, view, and print the activity sheet(s) you'll need a free copy of

Renaissance Explorers Some men were drawn to the seas out of a curiosity to discover more about the world. One such man was Prince Henry of Portugal, known as Prince Henry the Navigator. With the help of mathematicians, astronomers, cartographers, and other navigators, Prince Henry sent expeditions to explore the west coast of Africa. These explorations led to trade for gold and ivory and, soon after, slaves. Later, Portuguese sailors discovered the route around the southern tip of Africa that would take them to India entirely by sea. From The Western Tradition series.

New World Disorder
A Review of Explorers of the New World
John Butterfield Explorers of the New World, a feature-laden if one-sided exploration of the European journeys through North and South America, promises a multimedia investigation of the travels, findings and impact of age of discovery. It's said that history is written by the winners. So is this CD-ROM. That's its biggest problem. Because in this case the winners annihilated cultures while they amassed credits in the history books. Explorers of the New World makes a token effort to acknowledge the devastation, but effort is so timid and shallow that it ends up more insulting than illuminating. A more balanced portrayal not only would have been more historically accurate; it also would have added drama and intensity to what should be a sweeping tale of adventure, tragedy, greed, envy and courage. Instead, we get short, shallow McNuggets of information, gussied up with technological bells and whistles. Technically impressive bells and whistles, though. Future Vision Multimedia incorporates a well-thought-out, well-illustrated interface to introduce viewers to the adventurers who ransacked and reconnoitered the Americas from 1492 to the early 1600s. After an introduction touting the excitement and adventure to follow (mercifully skippable on return visits), the viewer finds a landscape peopled with costumed figures, and a few standard navigation tools: a compass (onscreen through all scenes) to jump from section to section; a timeline; a searchable database of explorers; a guided tour(nicely done) to explain maneuvering through the disk; and "Impact" a look at how items from Europe (cattle, smallpox) affected the Americas and (coffee, turkeys) vice versa.

This virtual exhibit from the US Library of Congress addresses the following questions: What was life like in the Western Hemisphere and the Mediterranean before 1492? What spurred European expansion? How did European, African and American peoples react to each other? What were some of the immediate results of these contacts? The exhibit also examines the first sustained contacts between American people and European explorers, conquerors and settlers from 1492 to 1600.

Spanish Explorers: In Search Of ? A WebQuest for 5th Grade Question l Background Information l Tasks l Resources l Activities l Assessment Question Why did the Spanish explorers risk their lives to explore new lands? Background Information The age of exploration was driven by a combination of many forces. European countries had a variety of political, religious, and economic reasons to explore new lands. Individual explorers often shared some of the same motives as the nations they represented but often they had their own reasons for exploring. The Spanish conquistadors were one group of explorers who sailed for Spain. They explored the Americas during the first half of the 1500's. It was during this time that the Spanish dominated the settlement of the Americas. Task Imagine you are a conquistador on a ship sailing to the New World during the 16th century. You have decided to tell the members of your crew all about your hopes and dreams for the upcoming seafaring adventure. You must choose one of the explorers in the table below to research. quest for the Northwest Passage and North Pole, the early explorers to Antarctic thenineteenth century when operations took place in every ocean of the world.
http://www.south-pole.com/homepage.html
Welcome to the home page of South-Pole.com. This site is dedicated to the heroic explorers of our polar regions and the surrounding islands. The tales of these brave souls were often related in expedition mail sent home to anxious loved ones and beneficiaries. As you browse through this site, you will witness an extensive mix of reference material that will be useful to philatelists and students of polar history alike. For example, to the left you will notice a letter addressed to Capt. Nathaniel B. Palmer (1799-1877), who went to sea at the age of 14. At the age of 20, he played a major role as captain and part-owner of the HERO on the Fanning-Pendleton Sealing Expedition. The following season, as commander of the JAMES MONROE , he and British sealer George Powell together discovered the South Orkney Islands.
While the history of Arctic adventure essentially begins with the nineteenth century quest for the Northwest Passage and North Pole, the early explorers to Antarctic seas made sojourns solely for commercial reasons, some of which, incidentally, made new discoveries. The majority of these voyages, along with the highest development of the whaling and sealing industry, came in the nineteenth century when operations took place in every ocean of the world. Many of the peri-Antarctic islands were discovered by sealers or whalers and the first landings on half of them were made by men engaged in the whale and penguin oil industry. A particular problem with many sealing voyages was the secrecy with which the industry was conducted; should a captain and crew discover a new sealing area, they normally concealed its location in the hope of having no competition when exploiting it on subsequent voyages. The early sealing industry declined as the population of Fur seals and Elephant seals were reduced to such an extent that the industry became virtually unprofitable.

The Club also donates funds to provide financial relief for orphanages, students and displaced refugee population in the remote areas of the world. Canyon Explorers Club trips are run on a share-the cost, share-the-responsibility basis; leaders volunteer their time and services free of charge. Current membership number is about 450. The Club started in October of 1972 by organizing and leading a series of annual backpack outings that traversed the unmaintained and cross-country routes of the Grand Canyon; hence the name" Canyon Explorers". Through careful planning and group arrangements we are usually able to minimize costs, and as individual participants of share-the -cost, share-the-responsibility group travel, we acknowledge and accept responsibility for our own individual well-being and safety as well as the well-being, safety, progress and integrity of our group. All of our trips emphasize the out-of-doors and natural science. The trips vary in difficulty from strenuous backpacking and technical mountain climbing to quite easy hikes, tours and campouts. On many trips it is feasible to divide the group so that persons seeking different levels of activity can go on the same outing and have an enjoyable time. Most of our members live in Southern California, so most of our trips originate from there. However, with leader permission, members may join a trip at whatever location is most economical and convenient for them.
