Perhaps the word travelers is more fitting for such an experience, but we have both had extensive experience with adventure learning projects and in the course of events have become acquainted with numerous present-day explorers of world renown. Since we have always been members of the support teams this is our first firsthand adventure of this sort so in our minds it is truly exploration. We will do our very best to report situations, events and experiences in a professional manner, but we feel it necessary to advise participants that it is very likely that there will be times when our enthusiasm is easily recognizable as that of novice explorers! We anticipate an inspiring experience and will do our best to communicate the flavor of the entire adventure to you. Return to Table of Contents

Easier - There have always been explorers. Explorers are people who travel to or investigate unknown places. In traveling, they make or follow a route, path, or trail. Prehistoric men and women who ventured out across the continents were among the first explorers. Harder - Explorers are usually thought of as people who purposely visit and study an unknown geographic area. The golden age of exploration began in the fifteenth century as sailors from Europe ventured out and explored the world, locating routes across its oceans and continents and defining the earth's physical shape, size, and positions. Today however, explorers are persons who systematically search, examine, and investigate for the purpose of discovering unknowns in all aspects of our universe; making new discoveries and expanding frontiers in science, medicine, technology, and our environment.

STANFORD, Calif. The way to kick-start a humans-to-Mars program is to take a do-it-yourself approach and focus on research needed to open the Red Planet to explorers and eventually settlers, a guru for Mars exploration says. Private monies are being spent to study how to combat the long-duration effects on mice and humans of microgravity en route to Mars, and to better assess the skills required of people that voyage that great distance to open up the next "New World" for humankind, says Mars Society President, Robert Zubrin. "I am myself of the pragmatist school. If humans-to-Mars can be done publicly or privately, I want it to be done," Zubrin said. "Whether it’s started by a NASA base or a private consortium, it will develop into an independent branch of human civilization." Zubrin made these statements Thursday at the Mars Society’s fourth international convention, held here at Stanford University through Sunday. Images

CUETZALAN, Mexico (CNN) British Royal Navy divers have led to safety all six explorers trapped in a warren of caves in eastern Mexico. But Mexican officials, angry that they were not informed of the British explorers' expedition, detained the rescued men while questions over their visas are sorted out. Among the cavers were four members of the British navy. Over several hours Thursday night, the men swam out of the cave one at a time. They had been trapped in the flooded cave for a week. Each emerged in apparent good health and spirits, officials said. The men were to be taken to a nearby military hospital to be checked out.

Explorers of the New World: A webQUEST of discovery Introduction Task Process Resources ... Evaluation Introduction Explorers from every era have braved the unknown to discover new lands. Religious fervor, greed, trade, empire building, and a thirst for knowledge have all played parts in the motivation of these explorers and the countries who sponsored them. The world we know today has been shaped by their adventures and continues to be expanded by those continuing the quest for new discovery. As important as these explorers have been and continue to be in the world's history, they are largely forgotten outside the classroom. In today's modern age we travel without a thought across vast oceans which once posed seemingly impenetrable barriers to the known world. TOP Task Congratulations! You have been given the opportunity to nominate an explorer for the latest series of trading cards by Top Cards . Working alone or in a group, you will search various resources to find information on an explorer of your choice. Once you have gathered your information, you will create a trading card for that explorer to submit to Top Cards, and a persuasive essay to convince them of your explorer's worthiness. Only 15 explorers will be chosen for the first pack of cards to be produced, so be convincing! TOP Process
  • If you are working alone, choose an explorer you wish to nominate, and narrow down his achievements to a particular voyage you wish to highlight. If you are working in a group, choose an explorer for the group to nominate, and each person in the group should choose a different voyage from that explorer to present in card form. If your group has more people than the explorer has voyages, you may pair up to create your cards.
