Passageways: True Tales of Adventure for Young Explorers website
Part 1 This teaching strategy is the first of a three-part unit plan, though it can be used separately. In this lesson, students will become familiar with the Passageways website. The lesson leads students through the website and requires that they read to find answers to a series of questions. Students will become acquainted with some of the general aspects of exploration, as well as the terms used. They will move from one thematic section to another, and visit the introductory page of one explorer in each theme. The time required for this lesson is one 50-minute session. Students can work as a class, in pairs or in groups. The National Library of Canada's Passageways website provides young learners with an idea of what it was like to venture into uncharted territory and face unknown dangers. Written and structured for children, the website is designed to be easy to use either in the classroom or at home. Discovery and Exploration

This category documents the discovery and exploration of the Americas with both manuscripts and published maps. Many of these maps reflect the European Age of Discoveries, dating from the late 15th century to the 17th century when Europeans were concerned primarily with determining the outline of the continents as they explored and mapped the coastal areas and the major waterways. Also included are 18th and 19th century maps documenting the exploration and mapping of the interior parts of the continents, reflecting the work of Lewis and Clark and subsequent government explorers and surveyors.

Films and TV series set in the past can help students (and teachers) of history to visualize the period they are studying. "Social studies is the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence. Within the school program, social studies provides coordinated, systematic study drawing upon such disciplines as anthropology, archeology, economics, geography, history, law, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, and sociology, as well as appropriate content from the humanities, mathematics, and natural sciences. The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world." Introduction
Where is Manitou Springs located, and why?
Manitou Springs has a rich and interesting history of settlement, which explains its present location in the state of Colorado. Several waves of explorers passed through the valley where Manitou Springs is now located (Fig. 1). Figure 1. The location ( x ) of Manitou Springs, Colorado. The first explorers were Native American people, including the Ute, the Anasazi, and the Navajo. These indigenous peoples revered the valley for its bountiful resources, including mineral springs and wildlife. Because these Native American cultures viewed nature with great religiosity, they practiced sustainable forms of agriculture. Ancient cliff dwellings that housed the Anasazi people may still be found in the area (Fig. 2). Subsequently, the landscape would begin to change as new explorers discovered the valley and used its resources for different purposes.

Use the Web as part of a comprehensive, integrated research strategy that includes the collections and services of the library, as well as its databases.
Isn't the Web a substitute for the library? No.
A library is a collection of full text resources in many formats that have been selected for their quality and utility. Libraries are arranged to facilitate research and use databases, including the online catalog special guides, to provide access to their collections. Libraries also purchase or license bibliographic or information databases for researchers to use.
Isn't the Web a database? No.
A database is a compilation of information that is organized into fields and can be searched logically, with dependable results. Databases may be library catalogs, indexes, or bibliographies, or they may be collections of statistics, directories of addresses, or inventories of merchandise stock. The common element is organization and reliable searchability.
It's not a library and it's not a database what is the Web?
