European Explorers A WebQuest for 5th Grade
Designed By Amy Barnum
amybarnum@yahoo.com
Introduction Task Process ... Conclusion
Introduction Thirty foot monsters, untamed seas, unknown lands, strange peoples, gold, riches. What awaits the ancient explorer on his journey? Throughout this quest, you will become familiar with the life of an explorer, his dreams, his life at sea, his accomplishments, and his effect on the new found land. Task
Your task is to take the identity of an European explorer as he searches the unknown world. You will be writing a proposal for your quest, keeping a journal of your experiences, and creating a map of your voyage. Upon your return, you will be informing your sponsors of your amazing journey, sharing your experiences with them. Process 1. Choose an explorer from the Explorer List 2. From the explorer's point of view, you will need to write a proposal to the governing authority for your quest. Your proposal should contain:
  • Where you are going, the route you will take, what you wish to accomplish in your voyage Why it is beneficial for them to sponsor you (What's in it for them?)

Abbreviations and Acronyms Used in Scouting
Compiled and Edited by: Ric Koval, February, 1996, "As part of my Wood Badge Ticket For Course C-36-94
"I used to be an Antelope" This listing of "Abbreviations and Acronyms Used in Scouting" grew out of a long series of questions asked by new Scouters and new Scouts alike. The abbreviations we used were confusing people and not leading to the clarity of purpose we need. Also, it almost began to sound like technical jargon, designed to keep new people out rather than include and welcome them into the Brotherhood of Scouting. After four years in Scouting as an SA, I had the opportunity to participate in Boy Scout Leader Wood Badge Training. Upon completion of weekend course C-36-94 (Viking Council, Mpls. MN), I undertook the difficult task of "writing my ticket". I wanted to do something to help the Scouts and Scouters of my local council (Twin Valley Council, Mankato, MN). So, among other things, this list is provided to be included in pack, troop, and post policy booklets to aid understanding of the language of Scouting. This list is NOT exhaustive; there are many other terms used for programs and offices and titles that are not included. Some of the acronyms and abbreviations in this list may not be used in your local council. Some are not "official" and were abbreviated to fit this list. What this list is, is a primer to help get started on "Scoutspeak". Add your own, remove the ones you don't use. Scouters are pointed toward the resources below.
