Evolutionary biology is a subfield of biology concerned with the origin and descent of species , as well as their change over time. See: Evolution Evolutionary biology is a kind of meta field because it includes scientists from many traditional taxonomically -oriented disciplines. For example, it generally includes scientists who may have a specialist training in particular organisms such as mammalogy ornithology , or herpetology but use those organisms as systems to answer general questions in evolution. It also generally includes paleontogists who use fossils to answer questions about the mode and tempo of evolution, as well as theoreticians in areas such as population genetics and evolutionary theory. The Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Ecology, Evolutionary Biology and Behavior is a multidisciplinary program of study and research leading to a Master's specialization or dual-major Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolutionary Biology and Behavior and one of the traditional disciplines offered by thirteen participating departments. The questions below are of interest to us at Michigan State University. Our Ecology, Evolutionary Biology and Behavior faculty and graduate students ponder these and many other fascinating questions. Do these sorts of questions interest you?
  • How do evolutionary changes in component populations influence community structure and ecosystem function?
Are ecological communities structured by universal "assembly-rules" or is each community a unique product of history, chance and environment?
Can demography and population genetics provide conservation biologists with accurate assessments of minimum viable population size?

Magisterium Is Concerned with Question of Evolution
For It Involves Conception of Man Pope John Paul II Message to Pontifical Academy of Sciences
October 22, 1996 To the Members of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences taking part in the Plenary Assembly With great pleasure I address cordial greetings to you, Mr President, and to all of you who constitute the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, on the occasion of your plenary assembly. I offer my best wishes in particular to the new academicians, who have come to take part in your work for the first time. I would also like to remember the academicians who died during the past year, whom I commend to the Lord of life. 1. In celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Academy's refoundation, I would like to recall the intentions of my predecessor Pius XI, who wished to surround himself with a select group of scholars, relying on them to inform the Holy See in complete freedom about developments in scientific research, and thereby to assist him in his reflections. He asked those whom he called the Church's Senatus scientificus to serve the truth. I again extend this same invitation to you today, certain that we will all be able to profit from the fruitfulness of a trustful dialogue between the Church and science (cf. Address to the Academy of Sciences, n. 1, 28 October 1986, L'Osservatore Romano English edition, 24 November 1986, p. 22).

    Welcome to EBIO!
Welcome to the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department (EBIO), a department in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado at Boulder (UCB). Undergraduate Studies lead to the BA degree while graduate studies within the department lead to the Ph.D. or MA degree in biology. The Department is one of many at UCB that deal with the life sciences. The EBIO Department has a broad range of coursework and research ranging from ecosystem to genetic processes, in the context of ecology and evolution. The department recently changed its name from Environmental, Population, and Organismic, and Biology ( EPOB ) to Ecology and Evolutionary Biology ( EBIO ). You may still see the old name in campus information sources or catalogs for a while. The importance of a broad undergraduate education in Biology cannot be understated and our recent restructuring has put the department of EBIO in a unique position at CU to prepare students for advanced research in all aspects of Biology, as well as giving them a broad general undergraduate education. Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
The Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) program is designed to provide the broad education needed to describe, understand and conserve the Earth's biological diversity in all its forms. Matriculating students will have the skills to conduct ecological, behavioral, systematic, molecular, and other evolutionary biological research, as well as to formulate and implement environmental policy. Graduates may pursue academic careers as researchers and teachers, or professional positions in national or international conservation, environmental, and multilateral aid organizations. All Ph.D. students in EEB must complete the Environmental Policy Certificate program, for which they receive a separate degree.

Independent research begins early in the graduate program, which is designed to prepare students for careers in research and higher education. Each student develops a flexible course of preparation individually arranged to meet his or her specific needs. In addition to course work, students receive much of their training through seminars and colloquia.Seminars each semester address topics of particular interest to current graduate students, and weekly colloquia in each of the graduate programs on campus give students contact with visiting scientists from a wide variety of disciplines. The Graduate Program in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology is centered in Walter Hall and is a closely knit academic family that currently includes 13 principal faculty members, 13 graduate students, and several postdoctoral associates. This small size gives our students the opportunity to interact in a personal and flexible program tailored for students within whole-organism biology, while resources in the other graduate programs on campus simultaneously give students the advantage of a large program. Campus-wide, there are over 25 faculty and 35 graduate students with active interests in organismal biology, addressing problems at all levels of organization. CIRCULAR REASONING IN EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY - IMPACT No. 48 June 1977 by Henry M. Morris , Ph.D.*
A significant development of recent years has been the fact that many evolutionary geologists are now also recognizing this problem. They no longer ignore it or pass it off with a sarcastic denial, but admit that it is a real problem which deserves a serious answer. The use of "index fossils" to determine the geologic age of a formation, for example, is discussed in an interesting way in an important recent paper by J.E. O'Rourke. "These principles have been applied in

The Comparative Method in Evolutionary Biology
Paul H. Harvey + Mark D. Pagel
Oxford University Press 1991 Amazon A book review by Danny Yee The comparative approach in evolutionary biology involves looking for correlations in characters between different members of a taxon. Using each species as an independent data point for statistical purposes is not valid, since species are often not independent because of a shared evolutionary history. The Comparative Method in Evolutionary Biology discusses several ways of using phylogenetic trees to separate the different components of the variation, thus allowing the use of simple statistical methods. Different methods are given for coping with discrete character variables, continuous character variables, and allometric relations. Prerequisites: basic statistics and basic biology. 6 July 1992
