Evolution
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
This article is about evolution in the biological sense. For other possible meanings, see Evolution (disambiguation)
Evolution is any process of growth or development that entails change. The word stems from the Latin evolutio meaning "unfolding" and before the late 19th century was confined to referring to goal-directed, pre-programmed processes such as embryological development. A pre-programmed task, as in a military maneuver, using this definition, may be termed an "evolution." One can also speak of stellar evolution chemical evolution cultural evolution spiritual evolution or the evolution of an idea . Other kinds of evolution include evolutionary algorithms (which include genetic algorithms ) which attempt to mimic processes similar to biological evolution in a computer program , most frequently as an optimization technique and as an experimental framework for the computational modelling of evolution. Modern usage
In the 19th century the word "evolution" was identified with improvement. It was clear to European thinkers at that time in the wake of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution that human societies evolved; many people have claimed the same about the evolution of biological species. In the 20th century, most social scientists came to reject the strict identification of social and cultural change with improvement (see also

Much work focuses on the large-scale composition, methylation, expression, structure and function of repetitive DNA motifs that make up the majority of most animal and plant genomes. A particular area of interest is the behaviour and evolution of retroelements and pararetroviruses. We use a combination of genetic, molecular and cytological methods - molecular cytogenetics - including in situ hybridization (hybridisation), fluorescence microscopy, electron microscopy, flow cytometry, DNA microarray and oligonucleotide hybridization, as well as molecular biology. Repetitive DNA in the genome is important for evolutionary, genetic, taxonomic and applied studies, providing polymorphic markers. Repetitive sequences include microsatellites or simple sequence repeats, retrotransposons and retroelements, genes, and tandemly repeated elements. Our work is important in showing the evolution of th

This is the central point of my website : the home-page. On this page I discuss what has kept and is keeping me busy. You can navigate by the button-bar on the leftto my CV, contact-information, my phd-topic, and see where I currently work. The boxes on the right will lead you to the journal of memetics, some linux topics and a number of photo pages. The photopages are either about something: (pet-snakes and frogs anbd a tree-guide) or just about how beautifull photos can be. My tree-guide is an attempt to show how to recognise trees, but in a diffenrent way. I try to show a lot of detail but also much variety within a species. For some time the photo-pages will be ungoing work though:-( The top-button bar takes you to pages on more general topics that interest me: On the academic side memetics (evolution of ideas and habits, but see a better definition there) and evolutionary theory (and philosophy of evolutionary theory). The other pages are less theoretic: my linux pages with various topics. The democratic/civilization page and the hate pages are about what makes me angry. I hope my pages are usefull for some!

Evolution, Science, and Society: evolutionary biology and the national research agenda At the invitation of their respective Society Presidents, representatives from the American Society of Naturalists , the Society for the Study of Evolution , the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution , the Ecological Society of America , the Society of Systematic Biologists , the Genetics Society of America , the Animal Behavior Society ), and the Paleontological Society met in Indianapolis on April 22-23, 1995, to discuss the need for preparation of a "White Paper" defining the challenges and opportunities facing the study of evolution. At that workshop, co-chairs D. Futuyma (editorial) and T. Meagher (organizing) were elected to seek funding to support workshops to develop background material for a white paper document as well as an associated executive summary and to coordinate and oversee their writing and publication. A Working Group representing major disciplines in evolutionary biology was convened to draft these documents with support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

Welcome to the home page for Biology 203 - Evolution at Old Dominion University. Whether you're a student in my course or just an innocent by-surfer, I hope you'll find something of use and/or interest here. One quick note on the relative brevity of the page: perhaps because evolution is both so broad in scope and so fundamental to all branches of biology, relatively few indices of "purely"evolutionary topics seem to exist. Instead, you'll find information and resources about evolutionary practice and theory embedded within the resources devoted to fields ranging from population ecology (population genetics models and software) to systematics (computer programs for reconstructing phylogenies) to artificial life (interactive animations demonstrating the effect of natural selection). So as you're surfing, be sure to look everywhere that's where you'll find it! Meanwhile, if you know of a good site I should include, please let me know

PICT.ESSAYS ... CRS.MATERIALS 1. The Continuity of Man and Animals
Today, I wish to talk about Darwin's biological considerations on morality. There are other people who treated the same or the related problems in the 19th century, e.g. Spencer or Huxley ; but it seems to me Darwin is by far the most important. When I began to study the Darwininan evolutionary theory some twenty years ago, I was very much impressed by Darwin's persistence with his thesis of the continuity of man and animals. In The Descent of Man , published in 1871 (2nd ed., 1874), this thesis is put forward as follows [Q1]: It has, I think, now been shewn that man and the higher animals, especially the Primates, have some few instincts in common. All have the same senses, intuitions, and sensations, similar passions, affections, and emotions, even the more complex ones, such as jealousy, suspicion, emulation, gratitude, and magnanimity; they practise deceit and are revengeful; they are sometimes susceptible to ridicule, and even have a sense of humour; they feel wonder and curiosity; they possess the same faculties of imitation, attention, deliberation, choice, memory, imagination, the association of ideas, and reason, though in very different degrees. The individuals of the same species graduate in intellect from absolute imbecility to high excellence. They are also liable to insanity, though far less often than in the case of man. (

In addition to state-of-the-art departmental laboratories, students have full access to the analytical laboratories and other facilities of the UCSC Institute of Marine Sciences. The campus is located on Monterey Bay, which has the largest concentration of marine research programs in the country. Terrestrial biologists have access to all of California's natural environments through the University of California's Natural Reserve System . More than two-thirds of our faculty participate actively in field studies throughout the Pacific Basin (from Alaska to Antarctica), in Pacific Rim nations (Latin America, the Far East, and Australia), and beyond.
