Britain's first zoo elephant arrived in London in 1254. It was a present to Henry 111 from Louis IX of France. Crowds flocked from so many miles to see the amazing creature, which was housed in the Tower of London, that a special shelter had to be built to accommodate the sheer number of visitors. His popularity was matched a little over six hundred years later by London Zoo's 'Jumbo' who became such a huge attraction for Londoners that there was a great public outcry when he was sold to Barnum and Baileys, the American circus. But in spite of the popularity of elephants, and in spite of their almost domestic use in Asia, very few have ever been bred in captivity. There is one very good reason for this: very few zoos that keep elephants keep an adult bull. Of the sixty or seventy elephants in British zoos, less than ten percent are bulls. The same percentage holds true for most European zoos.

Ankole-Watusi
Ankole-Watusi cattle are the show-stoppers of the bovine kingdom. Medium-sized animals, with long, large-diameter horns, they attract attention wherever they appear. These regal animals can easily trace their ancestry back more than 6,000 years and have often been referred to as "cattle of kings." The History of an Ancient Breed Long-horned, humpless domestic cattle were well established in the Nile Valley by 4000 B.C. These cattle, known as the Egyptian or Hamitic Longhorn, appear in pictographs in Egyptian pyramids. Over the next twenty centuries (2.000 years), the Egyptian Longhorn migrated with its owners from the Nile to Ethiopia, and then down to the southern reaches of Africa. By 2000 B. C., humped cattle (Longhorn Zebu) from Pakistan and India reached Africa. When these Zebu reached the region now known as Ethiopia and Somalia, they were interbred with the Egyptian Longhorn. The admixture produced the Sanga spread to the Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, and other parts of eastern Africa, becoming the base stock of many of the indigenous African breeds. The Sanga demonstrated most of the typical Zebu characteristics, such as pendulous dewlap and sheath, upturned horns, and a neck hump of variable size. Modern descendants of the Sanga, however, vary greatly in size, conformation, and horns, due to differing selection pressures by different tribes. Ankole Cattle Outside of Africa

Giant anteater born at London Zoo
After an anxious wait for Keepers at London Zoo, the Zoo's female giant anteater, Sauna, has given birth to a baby girl. These incredible animals are notoriously difficult to breed and there are less than 150 individuals in the international Endangered Species Programme (EEP) for breeding this threatened animal.
On 19 January, keepers anxiously watched Sauna on CCTV as she went into labour. At 6pm she gave birth and the new-born anteater almost immediately climbed onto Sauna's back. At only four weeks old, and weighing only 2kg, the young anteater has been suckling from her mother regularly, but is spending most of her time clinging on top of her mum's back and nuzzling her snout into her mother's thick hair.
"Sauna is being an excellent mother" commented Amanda Ferguson, Senior Keeper at the Web of Life. "We regularly weigh the baby and the vets carry out health checks to see if there are any concerns, but Sauna has had no problems producing milk, and the baby is certainly a very healthy weight at the moment."
The baby is almost identical in coloration to an adult with short course hair that has an identifiable white stripe running from head to tail, and longer hair on her tail which will become very bushy! Her unique long nose is only a few centimetres long at this stage and her strong front limbs have small effective claws that enable her to cling onto the mother's back.

Help us name our anteater baby girl
At just hours old the baby was riding on mum's back.
On 19 January 2002, at 6pm, Sauna, London Zoo's giant anteater gave birth to a bouncing baby girl. The keepers need your help in naming our latest arrival, so take part in the competition. Naming competition
We need a name for our baby anteater.
  • Can you think of a Portugese/South American name that would suit this little girl? We want to continue the Portugese/South American theme adopted last year when we named the baby's brother and sister, Sol (means sun) and Lua (means moon). E-mail your suggestion to: competition@zsl.org The sender of the chosen name will win a giant anteater Animal Adoption. About the baby anteater The birth of the female youngster is extra special, as these incredible animals are notoriously difficult to breed.

CITES - CONVENTION ON INTERNATIONAL TRADE
IN ENDANGERED SPECIES OF WILD FLORA AND FAUNA

As part of the United Nations Environment Programme, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna, or CITES, plays a central role in the world-wide fight against the trafficking of endangered plant and animal species. The CITES convention is in essence an international treaty. It was signed in Washington, D.C., USA in 1973 and entered into force on 1 July 1975. Today CITES has a "membership" of 146 nations, including the Czech Republic, which committed itself to the Convention in 1992. Member nations pledge to ban commercial international trade in an agreed list of endangered species, and to monitor closely the trafficking of plant and animal species at risk of becoming endangered. Both living specimens and animal parts and by-products (eg medicines and ointments) are covered by the Convention, and the export of these is permissible only upon official confirmation that they are not, or do not contain elements of, recognised endangered species. In the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Environmental Protection is responsible for regulating such matters. Brno Zoo has in its care many species protected by the Convention, including: sumatran tiger, leopard cat, polar wolf, chimpanzee, gelada baboon, ruffed lemur, nile crocodile, Grevy's zebra, kulan, markhor, kobus leche, sea eagle, blue and yellow macaw, green winged macaw, and others.

European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) Since 1985, the breeding of threatened and rarely kept wild animal species has been centrally managed within the framework of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP). At present about 150 species are supervised. For each of these species, there is a species commission with a species coordinator in charge, selected by the animal owners. This committee oversees and coordinates the building of breeding groups according to aspects of population genetics and furthermore promotes the zoo biology research of the species in question. Employees of the Frankfurt Zoo manage the EEPs for the gorilla, the maned wolf, the bush dog, the rusty-spotted cat, the vicuna, the sun bittern, the Socorro dove, and the rhinoceros iguana. Zoos that take part in the EEP relinquish their ownership and disposal rights concerning the species in question. Thereafter, they are only keepers of the species belonging to the EEP. The EEP logo found on the enclosure signboards indicates that species is a highly threatened species and that they are kept and bred according to the protocol for species preservation in the Frankfurt Zoo.

    What Can Zoos Do?
Download this page Each year, about 600 million visitors visit zoos worldwide. This is a unique opportunity to explain the threat for animals by the bushmeat trade -
as this exhibition does! But zoos can do even more:
    1. Origin of zoo animals
Modern, scientifically led zoos assume responsibility for the protection and preservation of wild animal populations . In Europe, 133 species are managed in EEPs and over 90% of the animals are born in zoos. Animals from these breeding programs are available to be reintroduced to the wild when possible. Members of the European zoo association, EAZA, exchange their animals according to breeding loans between themselves. Only in exceptional circumstances, for instance in confiscated smuggled animals, do animals from the wild enter zoos. Current zoo management no longer considers taking animals from the wild , as noted in EAZA's code of ethics.
