Captive population of Asian elephants in Europe et al. , 1993), so the male-female ratio was 1:9. Both zoos and circuses prefer to keep females. The keeping of bulls is believed to be dangerous, because of the periodic musth phases during which the handling of bulls is nearly impossible, because they show increased aggression and irritability, and decreased responsiveness to the commands of their keepers (Jainudeen et al. , 1972; Scheurmann and Jainudeen, 1972; Adams, 1981). The increase in aggression corresponds to increased testosterone serum levels during the musth phase (Rasmussen et al. , 1984; Cooper et al. Figure 1. Most manatees in European zoos are related and descend from a few individuals imported long ago, except for the four animals which Odense Zoo imported from Guyana in 2001.
Manatees show no complex social structures besides the long term unit of cow and calf. Nevertheless they are social animals preferring to live in herds. Isolated animals in captivity show stress symptoms: they eat little, stereotype, i.e. swim back and forth, doing rolls all the time and the like. As soon as they get company, this behavior seems to end.

Being a zoo elephant is not an easy life, far from it. You get fat, stressed, and unhealthy; reach puberty early; suffer fertility problems; and go to an early grave.
Asian elephants in European zoos live half as long as elephants hauling timber in tropical logging camps, Oxford zoologists say in a report published today.
Georgia Mason and Ros Clubb - funded by the Royal Society for the Protection of Animals, but working independently - analysed elephant births and deaths over 100 years in European zoos, and combed through 100 scientific reports.
The two call upon zoos to stop importing and breeding elephants until their welfare problems were solved. "We are shocked at what emerged," Dr Mason said. "We need real objective data on what captive elephants need for good welfare. Only then can we judge whether zoos can ever reliably keep these animals well."
In general, zoo animals live longer than wild animals with no predators, food available, and regular vet examinations.

Zoologists from across Europe are joining forces to save wild tigers in Siberia after an exceptionally severe winter. The tigers an endangered species have been driven out of forests by the lack of wild game and have been roaming villages and attacking pets and livestock in search of food. Several European zoos have answered an appeal for crates to move stray tigers away from areas where they have been in conflict with humans. Only about four hundred tigers are thought to be left in the wild in Siberia. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service Search BBC News Online

12/01/2001 - Updated 08:43 AM ET American zoos help Kabul animals "It was then quite a nice zoo for that part in the world," said Jones, director of the North Carolina Zoo. But that was 15 years ago. Today, the number of species at the Kabul zoo has been halved to 19, including a handful of wolves, monkeys, and a lion that was blinded in one eye when an Afghan guerrilla threw a grenade into its cage. The animals' welfare is a low priority of Kabul residents right now who have troubles of their own. In response to reports about conditions at the zoo, North American zoos and aquariums began a campaign this week to raise $30,000 to keep the Kabul zoo running for the next four to six months. By Friday, the North Carolina Zoological Society had pledges worth $26,000 from 150 donors. "Some people say, 'Isn't this a bit crazy when we've got all the human problems?"' said Jones. "I think there's ... a much larger appreciation of the animal side of this kind of conflict than what they might think."

    Basis
The veterinary prophylaxis in zoos fundamentally consists of five fields:
    • preventive measures in keeping and daily contact with animals
    • preventive measures during feeding
    • infection prophylaxis
    • parasitological monitoring
    • breeding-related measures

    General statistical results
    • the size of the zoos varis betwween 4 and 260 hectars (average size: 34 ha)
    • the zoo population varies between 270 and 15,600 individuals (average value: 2945)
    • the number of species varies between 28 and 1400 species (on average 356 species)
    • the staff membership varies from 8 to 287 (average: 96 persons)
    • approximately one-third of the investigated zoos do not employ their own veterinarian, relying instead on contracted veterinarianso
    • only one-fourth of the zoos are not visited daily by a veterinarian

Elephants should not be kept in zoos - UK charity Mail this story to a friend Printer friendly version UK: October 24, 2002
LONDON - Elephants should not be kept in zoos or safari parks because they suffer stress and die early, a British animal charity said yesterday.
The RSPCA is calling for a halt to new elephants being sent to zoos in Britain and Europe and an end to captive breeding programmes. Ninety percent of European zoo elephants have no natural grazing and the minimum enclosure sizes are more than 60 times smaller than the smallest wild territories, it said. "We hope zoos will sit up and listen," said Becky Hawkes of the charity, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. "There is no way zoos should be keeping elephants."

and the RSPCA Campaign to this topic. Harald M. Schwammer
hschwammer@zoovienna.at Statement Summary: The book A Review of the Welfare of Zoo Elephants in Europe , from Ros Clubb and Georgia Mason (Oxford University) has to be welcomed, although most data stretch back to the 1960s and across all zoos in Europe and consequently recent improvement trends are not mentioned. As theory-book together with the " Management Guidelines for the Welfare of Zoo Animals, Elephants ", compiled by Miranda F. Stevensen, as recently published by the Federation of Zoological Gardens of Great Britain and Ireland, improvement of elephant keeping methods can be enforced in selected zoos with outdated elephant-facilities and -management methods. And it has to be agreed that there exist still a lot of those. What made the RSPCA: The RSPCA was turning a useful scientific report into a highly emotive campaign,
This unfairly condemns good zoos, which are very important for education, research and conservation. This method is wrong, as it would be wrong to condemn all European universities and demand the closure of them, because in some of them problems in teaching-management or whatever had been detected. This is not the way to handle problems which for sure are existing.

With today's technological advances in Information Communication Technology, it is possible for anyone to access information, even in those countries that have no formal framework for vocational training as yet. The aim of this project is to use up to date methods of communication to improve, and in some cases introduce, Zoo keeper training throughout Europe. The training programme is delivered via the Internet, making it accessible world wide and a much more interactive way for keepers to learn.
One of the main objectives is to improve, through training, the conditions of and attitudes towards keeping captive wild animals, and go some way towards standardising levels of care.

    By Leela Jacinto
    March 28
Wildcats aren't generally supposed to eat poultry, but as the foot-and-mouth outbreak ravages Britain and prices of fresh red meat soar, the staff at South Lakes has been forced to increase the chicken quota in the wildcats' diets in a desperate bid to fight starvation. Across Britain and Europe, zoos and wildlife parks are emptying while food stocks are being depleted. At South Lakes Wild Animal Park, situated in Britain's hardest-hit district, park director David Gill said the zoo only had fresh meat stocks to last until Thursday. Vaccinations could prevent animals from getting infected, but vaccination is a difficult option for governments. Under European Union (EU) regulations, culling animals is the only way to earn a "disease free" status on world markets. If vaccinations were approved, countries would lose their status and face import bans around the world.

Drs. Koen Brouwer, National Foundation for Research in Zoological Gardens/ EEP Executive Office, c/o Amsterdam Zoo, P.O. Box 20164, 1000 HD Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
    Introduction
A European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) was initiated for the spectacled bear Tremarctos ornatus several years ago; this programme is co-ordinated by Bryan Carroll of the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust. Two years ago it was also decided to establish an EEP-programme for the sloth bear Melursus ursinus . Dick Dekker of Amsterdam Zoo was appointed as co-ordinator for this species and the National Foundation for Research in Zoological Gardens (NFRZG) is providing him assistance in organising and managing this breeding programme. The spectacled bear and the sloth bear populations in Europe suffer from the same problem: their numbers are too low for a successful breeding programme. Co-ordinators of both programmes therefore may have to expand the number of animal spaces in European zoos used for their species. Consequently, the two species could become "

(8 December, 1998) Magistrate partially revokes order after agreement is reached on conditions for relocation of animals. The Brits Magistrate's Court ruled yesterday that seven of the 30 juvenile elephants which were allegedly ill-treated on a plot outside Brits could be exported to overseas zoos. Magistrate Herman Glas partially revoked an order he made last week giving custody of the animals to the National Council of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. "The order I made last week is revoked in regard to these seven elephants," he said. Glas made the ruling after an agreement was reached between lawyers for the NSPCA and for the elephants' owner, African Game Services boss Riccardo Ghiazza. The two parties agreed that the export would take place no later than December 16 and that two NSPCA officials would be allowed to examine the animals before they are moved. Other conditions include that African Game Services must obtain medical certificates for the elephants from the state veterinarian and the NCSPCA officials will be allowed to monitor their relocation. The recipient zoos must be told by the company that the elephants may have future behavioral problems because of the alleged abuse, and must acknowledge in writing that they were aware of the court proceedings. Erfurt Zoo and Dresden Zoo, both in Germany, are to get two elephants each, and the other three are headed for a zoo in Basel, Switzerland.
