Monarchies of Europe
Index and Introduction
British Royal Family
My interest in European Royalty started about 18 years or so ago when I became intrigued with the inter-marriages between Queen Victoria's descendants and other European Royal Families.
I started off with one large genealogical table using a simple word processor, gradually moving across to a combination of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
I then tried my hand at my own Web Editing about 5 years ago and found that I could provide hyper-links between various parts of my Web Page. This was the stimulus I needed to start my Monarchies of Europe Web Site. The original genealogical table was too large to produce as one Web Page, so I took the plunge and started to produce separate Web Pages for individual Royal Families
I have produced separate genealogical tables and hence corresponding number of Web Pages for most of the main European Royal Families (45 to date) and update or add to them on a regular basis. Visitors to my site can readily click between the pages for any inter-marriage. The genealogical tables are very comprehensive and I believe they include all the descendants of Queen Victoria.
Wherever possible I have traced the lineage via the male line of the family, one of the notable exceptions being the descendants of Prince Phillip of Greece (Duke of Edinburgh) which are traced via Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain II of Great Britain.

On that April day, Jan van Riebeeck arrived with 3 ships and a company of 90 men, women and children. In 1657 nine of these settlers established a settlement in the Liesbeeck Valley. They grew crops to supply the Cape and the many passing ships. As shipping traffic increased around the Cape, these farmers needed more labour to replenish the passing ships. Jan van Riebeeck brought in slaves from places such as Java, Madagascar and Angola to work on the farms. The Cape Coloured people started emerging due to mixed marriages between Europeans, Asians and the indigenous peoples. The Dutch, through the Dutch East India Company, governed the expanding Cape Colony from 1652 to 1795. During this period many European settlers arrived, including the French Huguenot refugees (about 200, mostly young and married) in 1688.

by Donna Przecha Printer-friendly version Moving Around in Europ While U.S.-based genealogists think of emigration primarily between Europe and the U.S., it's also important to pay attention to historical migrations within Europe. Donna Przecha traces the dates and causes of some of the larger migrations to give you a better picture.
Reasons for Migration
William the Conqueror
One of the first large migrations that is significant to genealogists was after William the Conqueror came to England. While it is almost impossible to trace your family directly back to the Norman invasion, many people are able to find their family name in the Domesday Book, the census taken by William. When William, who was from Normandy in France, conquered England, he moved his court to London. Many Norman families also moved to England and eventually became English, but this large influx of immigrants had a big influence on the language, architecture, laws and customs of the country.
German Emigrants
Economics as a Cause of Migration
After the 30 Years War, areas of Alsace-Lorraine were decimated and villages abandoned. The King of France promised the Swiss freedom of religion and offered land if they would migrate to this area. Economic conditions in Switzerland had not been good and many felt they could do better in France. Many of the German-speaking residents of Eastern France can trace their ancestry back to Switzerland.

by Raymond S. Wright III, Ph.D., AG
Censuses are popular with genealogists. They name almost everyone in locality and often include important information about household members. Most family historians are familiar with United States decennial censuses, but may overlook them when searching for ancestors in European records. Most nations in Europe created census records at some point in their history. Unfortunately, these records were often destroyed as soon as statistical reports were compiled. Germany is a case in point. The state archives of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Schwerin, Germany, has a large collection of census records naming individuals. Some date from the first quarter of the seventeenth century. Denmark's earliest census was taken in 1769, but the second census in 1787 began the practice of naming individuals and recording facts about them and their families. Like most European censuses, Danish censuses are not indexed, but are worth searching for important information about ancestors and their families. Genealogists should remember that Schleswig-Holstein, Germany was part of Denmark until 1864. Sweden and Norway have census-taking traditions similar to Denmark, but began recording individual information about one hundred years earlier. The Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, has microfilmed many of these censuses.

My name is Hein Bruins and I live in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Genealogy is one of my many hobbies, along with travelling, practicing sports, going to the theatre or a museum and sozializing with my friends. I grew up on a cattle-farm in Groningen in the north of my country and I am working in the tourist industry and in the film and TV industry.
I started to be interested in royal genealogy at primary school when I saw a family-tree of the House of Orange, the Dutch royal family, in my history-book. Since those days I have collected quite a lot of information about European royalty and nobility. I am glad to finally be able to share my findings with other people. I don't claim that my genealogical charts are totally complete and up to date. Therefore I welcome critical notes, suggestions, adjustments, additions, questions and information about recent developments at my e-mail-address. I will regularly up-date my pages and add new ones.

May/June 1997 vol. 15 no. 3 Eastern European and Jewish Genealogy
For the person tracing both eastern European and Jewish family history, there is a wonderfully robust collection of sources available for obtaining both specific family data and sound genealogical research strategies. Many sources are also available to assist one in finding particular types of records and identifying record repositories. A "must-use" source for Jewish and eastern European research is a quarterly publication entitled Avotaynu: The International Review of Jewish Genealogy (Bergenfield, NJ: Avotaynu, Inc.) This work represents the best in information offerings for genealogists pursuing research in these areas. While the title may tempt one to believe it is solely for Jewish research, such a belief would be quite incorrect and most inappropriate. Many have called Avotaynu the most important source for conducting any type of historical research in eastern Europe.

    Genealogy and Family Heritage
Genealogy is the account of human pedigrees, describing and documenting familial relationships and ancestors. And it has become one of today's most popular and intensive avocations. From the personal perspective, genealogy is the archaeological and anthropological study of one's family heritage and ancestry. This ancestor-hunting is enjoyable, satisfying, and always full of surprises. It has all the intrigue of mystery. It has the thrill of the chase. It challenges and teases with unsolved puzzles. Up to the 20th century, most families ignored documenting their heritage and family relationships. After all, they tended to live in groups of extended families, maintaining a single family Bible and other treasures. But with the advent of the automobile, families fractionated and dispersed, often losing track of who and what their parents and grandparents had loved and treasured. Family Bibles and papers often end up in flea markets as generations far removed from the ancestors give away the documents of their heritage, not really knowing what they lose.
