Certainly fanaticism and militarism were underlying
factors of the reconquista...but it must be recalled that
the centuries of reconquest produced not only conflict,
but the unique pattern of convivencia in which Christians, Jews, and Muslims lived in relative tolerance and learned from and influenced each other. The Spaniards who went to the New World were heirs to the traditions of both conquest and convivencia.(1) THE TRIPARTITE CRIOLLOS OF HISPANIOLA The tripartite nature—Indo-Afro-Europeanof both Hispaniola's people and its culture has been little recognized or explored. In large part, this is because studies, particularly studies of the island’s conquest and colonization, have focused on Spaniards and Santo Domingo, which was their capital and administrative center. In Santo Domingo, as best they could, Spaniards reproduced their European infrastructures and European cultural patterns. Nonetheless, Santo Domingo was a frontier city. The culture that evolved there was not a perfect European replica because of: The Spanish colonists were even less successful at replicating their European infrastructures and European culture in the countryside than they were in the capital. In Hispaniola's countrysidein the gold mining regions, in the rural villages and pueblos, on the sugar ingenios, and in the uncontrolled regions of the islandSpaniards were outnumbered by a minimum of six-and-a-half or eight-and-a-half to one by Indians, Africans and "others" in the 1530s, long after the Indians were supposed to have disappeared and long before most of the African slaves arrived.(2)

European Cultural Studies Courses of Study:
Major (B.A.)
Program Website: www.brandeis.edu/departments/ecs Objectives European cultural studies (ECS) offers students the opportunity to study English and continental literature in translation in conjunction with one or more related disciplines: fine arts, history, music, philosophy, politics, sociology, and theater arts. Students will be able to count appropriate courses taken in clusters toward the ECS major. ECS is for those students who feel intellectually adventurous, who want to explore the interrelationships of literature with various other disciplines in order to gain a broader perspective of what constitutes "culture." With the advent of an everchanging Europe, students in ECS will be better prepared, in all areas, to keep abreast with current and future events. Many of our students spend some time abroad to get a feel for the cultures in which they are most interested. ECS majors have gone on to graduate schools (in history, politics, English, and other fields), have entered law school, business school, and advanced programs in international studies. How to Become a Major It is highly advisable that students make a decision no later than the middle of their sophomore year in order to take full advantage of the ECS major.

Vucedol culture flourished between 3000 and 2200 BC in what is now modern Croatia. Their copper metallurgy was based on a new process of mass casting. I Introduction
European activities in the intersection between the cultural and technology worlds – ‘Culture x Technology’ – have been developing strongly since the mid 1980s. In this regard Europe is of course not alone since similar progress has been occurring worldwide. However, in Europe it has been particularly dynamic due to the high concentration of cultural institutions such as museums, libraries and archives as well as the ‘live arts’. There have been considerable hopes in Europe that, as Computers and Telecommunications continued to become even more pervasive in their impact, this cultural market will lead to a significant supply sector i.e. a cultural technology industry with substantial jobs and worldwide market opportunities. However, it has been of considerable concern in the EU that this sector would be dominated internationally by large American multinationals. This paper provides an historical description of ‘Culture x Technology’ in the European Union to hopefully provide some helpful information and insights for Ukranians interested in this field and as a contribution to further research and debate in this field. It is organised as follows:
  • The origins and history of European ‘Culture x Technology’ developments

KURGAN CULTURE
I'm pleased and astonished to say that this page has been linked to by British television Channel 4 "Great Excavations". To find similar pages, go here.
The Kurgan people were an Indo-European culture existing during the fifth, fourth, and third millennia BC; they lived in northern Europe, from Russia across Germany, and various authorities have mounted a case for them being THE proto-Indo-European culture, from which all Indo-European cultures descend. Other researchers think it likely that later-day Kurgans were the "Sea People" who laid waste to the Holy Land around 1200 BC - traveling south along the Mediterranean in ships, with their women following them in wagons along the shore. The word kurgan means barrow or grave in Slavic and Turkic; Kurgan culture is characterized by pit-graves or barrows, a particular method of burial. They are also called the Pit-grave people, or Barrow people. The earliest Kurgan sites are in the Ukraine and southern Russia, from which they spread by about 2000 BC to Europe, crossing the Dnieper River. Wherever Kurgan culture spread, it was marked by common elements unlike those of the surrounding Bronze-Age cultures. These are the characteristics of the Kurgan people: They practiced animal husbandry; in rubbish dumps at Kurgan hill-forts and villages are found the bones of lots and lots of horses, many cattle, and a few pigs, sheep and goats. Few bones of wild game (such as deer) were found, so Kurgans were not a hunting culture. Horse-heads carved in diorite were found, with harness-marks cut into them to indicate bridles.

At the beginning of the new millennium, the cultural sector itself is becoming increasingly confident and self-assertive with regard to new technologies. Additionally, the cultural sector is recognised to be a significant job creator-and thus an exception- as well as making key contributions to quality of lifestyle and inbound tourism-thus contributing to additional job-creation (at least prior to the tragic events of September of September 11).
Across Europe as a whole there are estimated to be some 1,000 technology-based companies supplying and / or working with the cultural sector - both cultural heritage and ‘live arts’ - for which it is a significant part of their business, i.e. not merely supplying some generic equipment or software, but rather tailored solutions. However, it must be recognised that due to the cultural and linguistic diversity of Europe as well as other reasons comparatively few of these companies operate across Europe as a whole or even across the ‘single market’ of the European Union.
Due to a special Italian law, banks have been significant providers of funds and the most recent Italian national programme with strong support from several ministries, including, as in France, a strong Ministry of Culture is now providing significant funding for ‘Culture x Technology’ to Tuscany for a ‘New Digital Renaissance’ as well as to other regions. Similar forces and activities may be observed across the whole of Italy and, to a certain extent, the whole of Europe.

Introduction
My interest in vampires stems from a strong interest in gothic horror developed in my pre-teen years. I loved the works of Poe, the ghosts of Dickens, and of all the monsters on the silver screen, my favorite was Dracula. Like many of my youth, I ran home from school each day to watch Dark Shadows, and suffered along with the guilt-ridden vampire Barnabas Collins. It wasn't until after my marriage that I caught the collecting bug. My husband also shared my interest in horror and gave me a subscription to the Dark Shadows video series. A few months later, when on a trip to New York in 1991 he visited several secondhand bookstores, and brought back a suitcase-load of books about vampires. We were soon collectors of Vampireana in a big way.

Vladimir Ivanoff founded Ensemble SARBAND in 1986 and has been pursuing an archaeology of complex connections ever since: Above all, SARBAND endeavours to show all possible connections between European music, Islamic and Jewish music-culture. Both sensitively and intensely SARBAND celebrates the symbiotic relationship between the Orient and the Occident. CDs Artists The continuous musical collaboration within the Ensemble ensures that a dialogue on equal terms is maintained. It is the exchange of practical musical experience between musicians from different cultures that make the performances of SARBAND gripping, lively and utmost authentic. For the performance of European and Oriental medieval music the musicians draw upon the colourful palette of instruments, vocal and instrumental techniques and the art of improvisation which are still to be found in Mediterranean culture today.
