Bliesbruck-Reinheim (Moselle et Sarre)
By Jean Schaub, Jean-Paul Petit, with Philippe Brunella and alii
In the middle of Europe, near Sarreguemines, on the either side of the French-German border, between the regions of Moselle and Sarre, the european archaeological park of Bliesbruck-Reinhem, gives the visitor a diversified picture of the common past of the inhabitants of the "Blies" valley. Two key periods of the western civilisation are represented in this park: the period of the celtic habitations and necropolis with princelyfashion tombs (between 650 and 400 B.C.) and the Gallo-Roman period revealed by the presence of roman public baths built between the 1st and the 3rd century A.C. In Sarre, the famous princess of Reinheim's sumptuous grave (4th B.C.) containing all her treasures (golden necklaces and bracelets, sets of precious stones, ceremonial pitches...) undoubtedly attest the celtic dignitaries' prestige and spiritual world. In Moselle, the Gallo-Roman areas of Bliesbruck, with their craft buildings (blacksmith, caster, potter and baker workshops) equipped with underfloor heating system and demarcated with porticos, show its inhabitants' wealth and indicate they were concerned with exploiting all the economic and agricultural ressources of this pleasant valley, just as the Celts must have been five centuries before.

EU culture commissioner makes proposals for the future
At the meeting of the EU Culture Ministers held in Salamanca on 18-19 March, Viviane Reding, Commissioner for Education and Culture, referred to the importance that the new EU Convention will have in shaping the enlarged EU and the role culture will have on this process.
Culture's role was handicapped, in her view, because the decision-making process of unanimity and co-decision have resulted in poorly funded programmes like Culture 2000. C2000 expires in 2004 and the DG for Education and Culture is thinking about its replacement - 'Culture 2000 Plus' (!!) In the light of discussion with the Ministers the Commissioner considered three possibilities for the next EC action and programme relating to culture:
1. focusing on strategic thematic priorities such as the mobility of artists and works of arts, and further training of artsprofessionals;
2. implementing some of the suggestions of the Parliamentary reports of Ruffolo and Gracia Moura, namely co-operation
between the Member States, co-operation between and with third countries, cultural industries, education, training and other sectors;
