    http://www.culture.gr/cult97/thes97.html
    Thessaloniki, January 1, 1997
T he year 1997 is a year of Culture for Thessaloniki and therefore for the whole of Greece. For us, year of Culture means year of self-consciousness and promotion of our national cultural identity. The year when we welcome the European cultural diversity. F urthermore, the year of Culture is the year to emphasize on the institutions and the procedures of community partnership. Thessaloniki starts living on the rhythms and the strenuousness of the European Cultural Capital with the necessary combative optimism for the organizing of such an event of major importance. Thessaloniki Cultural Capital of Europe 1997 is a most substantial investment of capital and expectations which is going to be evaluated on the first day of 1998. N ow is the time for an unreserved participation in a European institution that allows us to demonstrate the best, the brightest and the most creative face of Greece and Hellenism. T oday, as a Minister for Culture and as a citizen of Thessaloniki, I feel honored to send to all of you an invitation for a cultural joint action and participation.

    105. The Mulatto People: A Race And Culture
This site promotes the creation of a culture for mulattoes, or people of mixed African and european descent.
    http://internettrash.com/users/mulatto/
I've taken the flashing words off this screen to explain a few things. I went to livejournal.com and read some people's take on the whole deal here. I am writing this as of November 19, 2002. It has been nearly two years since this site has been updated, yet these bashings were written two months ago. I plan to create another site, but with not as many features and with a different focus. However, before people can peg me with negative names and descriptions, they have to understand where I'm coming from on everything that I've stated. I initially intended to present the following paragraphs as numbered facts, so please pardon the inconsistencies. I bashed both blacks and whites on this site, not just blacks. I do not "behave" like a black person nor a white person. Since I obviously do not look white, whites do not have an issue with this - obviously, no one is calling me a "wigger". The problem comes in when blacks around me complained that I "talk like a white boy" (I just speak proper English, that's all), or acted as though I lived a sinful lifestyle because I wasn't into hip-hop or didn't sport urban gear. I am now 23 years old, having only lived in the "real world" for five years. I got into the mulatto thing at age 18, and left it alone for awhile at the age of 21, when I stopped updating the site. The point is, I still had the high school mentality that I had to justify who I was, what I was into, and how I behaved. And during those high school years, when I "justified" my behavior before blacks, my justification was that I'm not all black: I'm half white also. Having become frustrated with the fact that it wouldn't fly among them, I began to seek out other mulattoes who had similar issues.

    Background
The European City of Culture was the result of an initiative by the Greek Minister of Culture, Melina Mercouri. It was launched at intergovernmental level in 1985 by the Council of Ministers, which has designated at least one European City of Culture each year since then. Weimar is the most recent German city to have held the title, during our EU Presidency in 1999. This year's title-holders are the Italian city of Genoa and the French city of Lille. Cultural Capital of Europe During the German Presidency, and on the basis of Article 151 of the EC Treaty, the event was integrated into the Community framework and a new selection procedure was introduced. At the same time, the European City of Culture was renamed the Cultural Capital of Europe. This Council decision of 25 May 1999 will enter into force as of 2005. Rotation principle The new procedure is based on a rotation principle, with individual EU member states able to suggest one or more Cultural Capitals for a particular year, possibly stating preferences.

Search Culture Culture first became an active concern of the European Community as a direct consequence of the Treaty on European Union of 1992 (the Maastricht Treaty). The treaty extended Community responsibility into new areas, including culture. To achieve this, Article 3 of the (basic) EC treaty was revised to extend the objectives of Community action to make "a contribution to education and training of quality and to the flowering of the cultures of the Member States". In addition Article 151 of the Maastricht Treaty requires the Community to take cultural aspects into account in its action under other provisions of the treaty and to promote cultural diversity. The consequence of this is that culture must be taken into consideration when developing activities and policies: for example education, economic and social cohesion among Member States, job creation and eliminating social exclusion. In the initial post-Maastricht period this increased responsibility for culture found practical expression in Community programmes such as Kaleidoscope (cross-border artistic collaboration), Ariane (literature) and Raphael (heritage). These have now been superseded by the

BRISTOL CAPITAL OF CULTURE BID -
    AN ALTERNATIVE VIEW
    Last updated 26th November 2003
Bristol has always been a beautiful city, it is only comparatively
made such an effort to ruin it by constricting the traffic arteries and allowing cyclists to ride at speed
back of their heads and reflexes and reaction times of a F1 driver they need have no fear.
Oh yes, and if you visit the city centre or shops beware thieves, con artists, drunks and beggars
who inhabit the area in large numbers .
Difficult to understand why, but in November 2002, the Committee for judging the European
Capital of Culture has considered that Bristol should stagger into the last six although it is likely to be ranked sixth looking at the other candidates. Bristol, quite understandably, failed to win Britains Cleanest City for 2003 because of all the rubbish, graffiti, ruination of street furniture and shop windows with fly posting and the horror of

    http://www.uwosh.edu/home_pages/faculty_staff/earns/etchu.html
EUROPEAN INFLUENCE ON THE "CULTURE OF FOOD" IN NAGASAKI Etchu Tetsuya translated by Fumiko F. Earns
Eating may be viewed simply as a biological function based upon physical and physiological needs, but when it comes to eating habits and the content of meals, a variety of factors must be considered. For this reason, I coined the phrase "shoku no bunka shi" (the cultural history of food) and began to publish on this topic in 1960, arguing that diet changes according to regional climate, politics, history and customs, and that it displays distinctive characteristics from one region to another. In particular, I paid special attention to the culture of food in the Nagasaki region as it is quite unique in Japan and provides a keen insight into the city's colorful history of international exchange. The Opening of Nagasaki Harbor and the Culture of Food The person who opened the door for the introduction of Western culture and Christianity in the Nagasaki region was the feudal lord Nagasaki Sumikage, a vassal of the daimyo Omura Sumitada. In May 1563, Omura and twenty-five of his vassals (including Sumikage) were baptized in the port town of Yokoseura, which the previous year had been visited by the annual Portuguese ship. After the baptism, Sumikage returned to Nagasaki. Omura Sumitada's baptism meant that everyone who resided in his domain had to convert to Christianity. At this time, a Catholic church was built in Yokoseura, and bread (pan, from the Portuguese word pao) and wine were provided for use in the Mass. The word pan was already well known among the Christian population in Japan.
