Thinkers and scholars have addressed in one way or another the existence of a totalitarian potential in Western thought. Some of them propound an alternative of embracing the Christian tradition, viewing the dissociation from this tradition, and the struggle waged against it by the followers of the different totalitarian trends, as the source of Western totalitarianism. This outlook is also manifested in classical conservatism and in the neoconservative ideology of today, and though it certainly has strong positive features, a Christian alternative will not withstand the test. When Christianity and totalitarianism are compared, not in terms of their explicit ideas but in terms of their modes of thought, it emerges that the roots of totalitarianism lie precisely in Christianity itself. On the other hand, it is precisely in authentic Jewish modes of thought that there lies a real alternative to Western totalitarianism. Therefore, the definition of Western civilization as "Judeo-Christian" is fundamentally erroneous. However, how can the well-known fact of the disproportionate participation of assimilated Jews in the totalitarian experiments be explained? The article tries to prove that this resulted from the phenomenon of

Profile
The Institute for European Cultures (IEC) is an independent, non-profit institution of higher education which is involved in both research and teaching. It offers a supplementary course of study in "European Cultures" to students of the humanities. The IEC was founded in the autumn of 1995. In September 1996, teaching began. The foundation and development of the institute were a French-Russian-German project which was carried out as a part of the European Union's TEMPUS program for reform in Eastern European higher education. The three institutions which founded the IEC are: Russian State University for the Humanities (Moscow, Russia), Ruhr-University (Bochum, Germany), and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris, France). By founding the institute and developing its curriculum, the Russian and Western partners made an important practical contribution to the renewal of Russian higher education in the humanities.

COMMUNITY PROJECT PROFILES
DESCRIPTION
The celebration of the "European Culture Days" was established in 1991, based on a European Community Initiative. The celebration lasts for one month and Serbia and Montenegro participated for the first time in late 2003. Prokuplje Town decided to participate with the theme "The Fortress," referring to the ancient fortress sitting on the mountain in Prokuplje. Some examples of activities held in 2003 include a painting event by children, a play performed at the fortress and an art competition. IMPACT Over 1300 children and hundreds of adult citizens of Prokuplje participated or attended events organized for "European Culture Days." For one day, Prokuplje felt what it was like to have cultural events in town, and felt proud of their cultural heritage. Prokuplje Town will organize this event yearly, and will try to organize other events throughout the year.

Living with Today's Caesar "From European Culture to American Civilization"
By:
Sartaj Aziz The U.S. victory in Iraq and its long-term consequences are being widely debated in the media and the various think tanks around the world. The motives identified range from the control of Middle Eastern oil, to safeguarding Israel's security. Future predictions focus on the growing alienation between the Western and the Muslim worlds, leading to more not less terrorism in the future. Some observers are more worried about the emerging global order, in which powerful countries can act unilaterally without the UN's endorsement, to pre-empt possible (and not actual) threats to their security, thus destroying the post-war international diplomatic and political system based on the UN Charter, to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a nation state. But in this fateful debate, one important dimension remains unexplored - the historical evolution of the Western World and the intricate relationship between Europe and America.
