the amerindian presence
the ciboney
The first inhabitants of Barbuda were hunter gatherers who came by canoe from Yucatan in Mexico about 3000 to 4000 years ago . These people are called Ciboney, "the stone people" from the Arawak language, or "pre-Ceramic" as pottery is not associated with their sites. Artefacts include blades fashioned from the large gastropods that the Ciboney harvested, while celts, picks, hoes, and water vessels were made from Queen Conch, King Helmet, and Trumpet shells and whelks. The best evidence for their presence is along the southwest coast of Barbuda from Coco Point to River and up to the southeast corner of the Lagoon. This is the Strombus Line, made of piles of Queen Conchs ( Strombus gigas ) that had been harvested for their nutritious meat and thousands of chert flakes from Flinty Bay, in Antigua. These hard sharp stones would have been used to cut meat for cooking or drying. Habitation sites are along the coast near Codrington, River, Sucking Hole, Factory, and Goat Pen. Human remains carbon-dated as 3100 years old were found at Boiling Rocks, near Spanish Point.
the arawaks
The Arawaks or sub-Tainos came from Venezuela and Guyana at about the time of Jesus Christ. The earliest human remains are at Seaview, near Two Foot Bay, and date from 1600 years ago. The Arawaks were excellent at horticulture. They cultivated sweet potatoes, corn, peanuts, cotton, tobacco, and numerous fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants. The bitter cassava plant provided the staple of the Arawak diet. They peeled, shredded, squeezed, and sifted the starchy tuber to remove the cyanide and then baked cassava as bread on griddles the size of pizza pans. Fish, turtles, manatees, and other seafood, birds and their eggs, iguanas, small mammals, and land crabs provided the protein in a very well balanced diet.

Geneticists Trace Migration of Mideast Agriculturists to Europe
By Kurt Holden
"[Dr. Cavalli-Sforza] finds that after the introduction of agriculture in the Middle East about 10,000 years ago, farmers from there spread at the rate of one kilometer, or five-eighths of a mile, a year, eventually settling throughout Europe. " New York Times July 27, 1993 The world generally credits the Sumerians, who lived in the marshlands created by the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in southern Iraq, with the development of civilization. Although nearly contemporary river valley civilizations also developed in the Nile Valley of Egypt and the Indus Valley of Pakistan, the Sumerians seem to have been the first people to live in cities and to create a system of writing. Scientists also regard the "fertile crescent," an arc linking Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Israel/Palestine, as the site of the earlier "neolithic revolution," when hunter-gatherers first learned to plant crops, and then created permanent settlements to cultivate, guard and harvest them. The evidence is the fact that wild ancestors of the food crops associated with traditional Middle Eastern and European agriculture are native to the fertile crescent.

It examines the contemporary life and history of Africa through its triple heritage: what is indigenous, what was contributed by Islam, and what was acquired from the West. The coexistence of these legacies helps to explain the diversity of the continent and the African people. 1. The Nature of a Continent The examination of Africa as the birthplace of humankind and discussion of the impact of geography on African history. The program includes the role of the Nile in the origin of civilization and the introduction of Islam to Africa through its Arabic borders. 2. A Legacy of Lifestyles African contemporary lifestyles are examined by tracing the influence of indigenous, Islamic, and Western factors. The program compares simple African societies with those that are more complex and centralized, and examines the importance of family life. 3. New Gods

Underwater Archeology
It is possible that a great number of moments of the skill and industry of man will, in the course of the ages, be collected together in the bed of the ocean than will exist at any other time on the surface of the continents. Charles Lyell, 1872 Acheologists use underwater archeology to explore sunken ships, covered civilizations, and hidden organic elements beneath the water's bottom layer. The definition of archeology is fundamental to understand the uses of underwater archeology. Archeology is the study of past events. Archeology stems from many different fields of science, such as: biology, geology, and chemistry. The main goal of underwater archeology is to reconstruct past cultures and ways of life of ancient civilizations. Many laws and regulations exist in countries to prevent archeologists from stealing or destroying their findings. European countries have well developed underwater archeology programs. Sweden and Finland are the leading countries in search of underwater cultures. The water creates new obstacles for archeologists to deal with. For example, mud covers the sunken artifacts, metal remains rust, and wooden items decay under the water. Pottery, ceramics, and ammunition from World War 2 were found at Ponza.
