22. Honoring Homer Thomas
Maryellen H. McVicker, Ph.D. As a graduate student in european archeology,I have the privilege to use the collections developed by Homer Thomas.
http://mulibraries.missouri.edu/admin/HomerThomas.htm
The MU Libraries Remember Professor Homer L. Thomas and His Many Contributions to the Libraries. The following obituary was supplied by the Department of Art History and Archeology and was previously published in the AHA Newsletter, Number 8, Summer 2003. We thank Marcus Rautman, Department Chair, for sharing this with us. Homer Thomas (1913-2003) Homer Thomas, Professor Emeritus of Art History and Archeology, was born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1913. He attended the University of Chicago, the Warburg Institute in London, and the Johns Hopkins University. He completed his studies and received his Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh in 1949. He worked at the Asia Institute of New York City and the University of Michigan before coming to the Department of Art at the University of Missouri in 1950. Homer Thomas and Saul Weinberg were instrumental in re-establishing the Department of Art History and Archeology as an independent academic unit in 1960. Professor Thomas taught courses in Oriental Art and Civilization I-II, European Art and Archeology I-II, Roman Provincial and Early Christian Art, and Art of the Dark Ages. He supervised the writing of eighteen masters theses and four doctoral dissertations. Throughout his years in Columbia he played an important role in building the collections of Ellis Library, including the superb holdings in the fields of archeology and art history. He cared so much about the quality and depth of the MU Libraries' collection that he used to travel to Europe in the summers at his own expense, scouring bookstores and calling on antiquarian book dealers to acquire for the library missing items, based on his vast and detailed knowledge of the library holdings and the gaps in them.

tell >. We are all familiar with this word meaning an artificial hill, or a mound, from a previous settlement. Since the word has passed into the English language, the first librarian looked up the word in an unabridged English dictionary. The English dictionary correctly defined the word and gave the etymology as if the word came from Arabic. Using the correct tools let us examine this word's etymology. Arabic as a written language is much more recent than Hebrew. Old or Early Arabic has no surviving written records. The Talmud, which pre-dates written Arabic, has some statements containing names of objects in Arabic, making the Talmud one of the earliest sources of recorded Arabic. Classical Arabic dates from about 632 C.E. with the creation of an Arab empire. Arabic contained many dialects because the speakers were tribal and isolated from each other. However, speakers from different dialects could understand each other. Because of this isolation, Arabic had fewer outside influences than Hebrew and tended to have short vowels. Because of the synthetic nature of how Arabic developed in the classical period, most of the verbal and noun forms are created from three letter roots. Hebrew, too, has three-letter roots, but certain words have remnants or clues to earlier two-letter roots. For example some two-letter roots became words with a yod as the middle letter or via a doubling of one of the letters.

Its wealth of historic monuments was to lead France, during the first thirty years of the 19th century, to introduce legislation allowing it to list and thus protect its heritage in all its diversity and in the public interest. A model which has inspired other countries.
    • a classified building may not be transferred or sold without informing the minister.
Archaeological excavations, however, are governed by the law of 1941. A system made up of duties and incentives But protecting the building alone may not be enough. This is why the act of 1943 introduced the concept of conservation belts providing protection within a radius of 500 metres of the classified building. Any change to this perimeter is subject to the permission of the Architect of the Buildings of France. For the first time, the legislator explicitly linked heritage and planning. While the law makes works of consolidation, restoration and improvement of classified buildings compulsory, it also provides the possibility of obtaining State grants, often supplemented by others from local authorities. In terms of taxes, it creates the right to certain exemptions, for example, up to 100% of the amount of property tax in the case of classified or listed properties open to the public. Private initiatives supporting the heritage are also encouraged by tax reductions, in particular sponsorship by private individuals or businesses.

What's New @ Ramsar English Heritage launches wetlands strategy On 28 May 2002, English Heritage, the Government's statutory adviser on the historic environment (sponsored by the Ministry for Culture, Media and Sport - DCMS), organised in London a seminar on the historic environment in England's wetlands at the occasion of the launch of its Wetlands Strategy, introduced by Adrian Olivier. A handful of speakers, representing archeology and historical science, as well as ecology and the administrative bodies responsible for cultural and natural heritage management (English Heritage, English Nature), covered current issues, practice and policies for better integrated management decisions and debated what can be learnt from the past in shaping the future. The Ramsar Bureau was invited to present the new "Guiding principles for identifying the cultural aspects of wetlands and incorporating them into the effective management of sites", proposed to COP8 for adoption. English Heritage had earlier commissioned the 'Monuments at Risk in England's Wetlands' (MAREW) report to identify the state of 13,400 archeological monuments in wetlands, without counting those non-identified monuments remaining deeply buried in the alluviated lowlands and beneath upland peat. 78 per cent of this identifiable resource has been damaged or destroyed in the past 50 years through drainage, water abstraction, conversion of pasture into arable land, peat wastage, erosion and extraction, and urban and industrial development.

The Goddess The Concept of the Goddess An up-to-date, highly readable study of the female aspect of religion both in past and present mythologies. It explores the function and nature of goddesses and their cults in many cultures, including Celtic, Roman, Norse, Caucasian and Japanese traditions. Dancing in the Flames: The Dark Goddess in the Transformation of Consciousness Marion Woodman, Elinor Dickson Earthy and immensely powerful, the Black Goddess has been a key force in world history, manifested in images as diverse as the Indian Goddess Kali and the Black Madonnas of medieval Europe. But images of her have been conspicuously missing from the Western world for centuriesuntil now. Here, the authors explain the psychological significance of the divine feminine in the lives of modern women and men. Embracing the Goddess Within: A Creative Guide for Women Kris Waldherr This masterfully illustrated sequel to The Book of Goddesses shows women how to incorporate the powers and strengths of Goddesses into everyday life. Readers will learn not only the symbolism, qualities, and mythic energies associated with each Goddess, but also how to create personal rituals to access their ancient power and wisdom.

The Faculty of Philosophy was one of the four original faculties at the University of Oslo. In 1861, however, this faculty was divided into two new faculties, The Faculty of Arts and The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The fields of study covered by The Faculty of Arts range from the classical civilizations of Antiquity up to the modern world and the cultural aspects of its technology. The variety manifests itself in the nearly 80 different subjects offered: European and Asian languages, linguistic and philological studies, area studies concentrated on the history and culture of particular regions, aesthetic studies, data- and media-studies as well as a large and diverse group of cultural, historical and philosophical subjects. In the 3-year period 2000-2002 special emphasis will be laid on investment in research in European Archeology, Corpus-based Linguistics (language research based on large collections of texts in machine-readable form), Philosophy of Science, and East-Asian languages and cultures. Towards the end of 2002, these research milieux will each be assessed to determine whether to continue the investment in that particular area, or to transfer the funding elsewhere. (full document in .rtf format, download zip file 37 KB) This work concerns the chemical study of the organic materials of natural origin used for treating the inside of amphoras, for water-proofing materials of caulking and pictorial found on the ships (IV cent. BC.- II cent. A.D.) found in the urban port of Pisa.
The chemical study of these materials could, if integrated properly with available information from historical sources and archaeological data contribute knowledge to craft techniques and everyday activities of the past and furnish precious information on exchanges and ancient commercial trade routes.

(With the contribution of E.U. within the Culture 2000 framework program) Thanks to its transactional structure, the European Heritage Laboratory "Le Navi di Pisa" has been promoted as scientific support activity
Managed by the town of Pisa, and co-ordinated by the Soprintendente Archeologo per la Toscana (Archaeological Supervisor for Tuscany), the laboratory should also consider the general strategy developed by the Scientific Commission specifically established by the Italian Ministry of Culture to plan and design the creation of the Roman Ships Museum in Pisa. The activity will be based on a strict scientific collaboration, in order to widen the feasibility of future works and make possible the mutual exchange of experience and their diffusion at an international level. The exchange of experience will focus on naval archaeology and on safeguarding of submerge wood discussing on innovative aspects for the diffusion and the presentation to the public of the results and will take advantage of the knowledge acquired by the partners participating in the laboratory. The basic activity of the laboratory is much more relevant in relation to the fact that most of the ships found in the old Pisa port are in good condition of conservation; indeed the structure of the relics is still intelligible. Moreover, on an important part of the boat's superficies, there are still remnants of the wooden caulking work, and traces of the paint on the wood surface.
