The primary focus of the Old World Archaeology Program is European archaeology, with an emphasis on Iron Age Celtic cultures. Associate Professor Bettina Arnold, the Program Director, is ... The " Landscape of Ancestors " project directed by Professor Arnold in southwest Germany provides experienced undergraduates and graduate students who are interested in Old World archaeology with an opportunity to participate in on-going excavations and analysis of material from sites in the vicinity of the early Iron Age Heuneburg hillfort. A study of ceramic material from the 1999-2000 excavations at Tumulus 17 is currently being conducted by a Masters candidate in the program, and there is the potential for other projects involving the interpretation of textile fragments and small finds. Excavation of a second burial mound in the same mound group as Tumulus 17 is planned for 2002, and subsequent field projects are expected in the course of the next few years.

What's New @ Ramsar Wetlands and cultural heritage conservation Report on the 2nd General Assembly of the European Archaeological Council Nick Davidson
Deputy Secretary General, Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, Iran, 1971) European Archaeological Council The Europae Archaeologiae Consilium (European Archaeological Council, EAC) is a network of representatives of national and subnational cultural heritage management organisations and agencies, established in 1999 and currently representing 21 European countries. Its primary mission is: "to support the management of the archaeological heritage throughout Europe and to serve the needs of national archaeological heritage management agencies by providing a forum for organisations to establish closer and more structured co-operation and exchange of information." The EAC held its 2 nd Developing cooperation between Ramsar and EAC Over the past six months, EAC has been in dialogue with the Ramsar Bureau with a view to establishing a programme of cooperation to increase recognition of the importance of the cultural management of wetlands, in order to ensure that, in particular, cultural heritage conservation is taken fully into account in wetland management planning and implementation. There is a great deal of common ground between the objectives of biodiversity conservation and cultural heritage conservation in wetlands, notably that for both of these interests the underlying objective is that the wetlands must remain wet and that appropriate hydrological management is essential to achieve this.

PRE-REQUISITE(S)
RATIONALE:
General knowledge about the Pre-European past of the Australian continent is often ill-conceived or based on socio-cultural evolutionary stereotypes. This unit introduces students to the complexity and diversity of the Pre-European past, placing Aboriginal cultural adaptations among the most successful in human history. Fundamental to an understanding of Aboriginal culture is an awareness of its past. From an understanding of the human past through archaeology, students are in a position to assess the extraordinary achievements of Pre-European hunter-gatherers on the Australian continent.
SYNOPSIS:
This unit will address the major issues and examine the archaeological evidence relating to Australian "prehistoric" archaeology, including initial colonisation of the continent, environmental history, the pattern of Pleistocene adaptations and late Holocene Change. The unit will also address theoretical approaches as case studies and deal with the problems associated with the practice of archaeology as it relates to "living cultures". It is felt that this course will provide an essential background for those interested in pursuing an archaeology career as a sub-discipline within anthropology or for those with a general interest in Australia's human past.

The LRC Reference Services have developed subject guides to help you get started in your investigation of a subject. Our subject guides are usually based on a program of study or on a specific topic and include: titles and call numbers of relevant reference books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, periodical indexes, journals, internet sites, and other suggested resources. Useful keywords, call number ranges, and contact names are also included. Some topics are interdisciplinary in nature and useful information can be found in more than one subject guide. For example, a student writing a research paper on the effects of diet and exercise on health, would benefit from consulting the Nutrition, the Health and Fitness, and perhaps even the Physical Education Subject Guide.

Tour the Smithsonian After its First Fifty Years
    Department of Archaeology
The National Museum began early to be the depository of collections, now become the largest in the country, of objects illustrating North American archaeology-that is the state of aboriginal culture before it became modified by European influence. These prehistoric relics, derived from mounds and other ancient burial-places, on or below the surface of the ground, in caves, shellheaps, etc., are made of chipped and ground stone, copper, bone, horn, shell, clay, and to a small extent of wood and vegetable fibres. "Similarity of shape afforded the principal guidance in arranging these specimens, many of which leave a wide scope for conjecture as to the uses to which they were applied by the makers." Three separate series have been laid out for exhibition in the great upper hall of the old Smithsonian building by Dr. Charles Rau, who is curator. First a synoptical collection illustrating European archaeology, by means of typical specimens arranged serially in the circle of table-cases occupying the center of the room; this should be examined first, as it condenses into brief space the whole range of prehistoric workmanship. The general collection illustrating the archaeology of all North America forms the second, and most important part of the exhibit; the third part being independent special collections relating to limited localities. The general collection occupies the table-cases on the floor and proceeds in classification as the cases are numbered, from 1 upwards; the wall cases being devoted to the special local exhibits.
