Archaeology: The Programmes
Archaeology (General) BA F400/Archaeology (General) BSc F402
These degrees are designed to provide a general training in archaeology, covering both theoretical and practical approaches, while also giving students the opportunity to follow their interests in terms of periods, geographical areas and special fields of study. Students reading for both of these degrees take the same core courses in their first and second years. Those following the BSc route will normally then concentrate on a choice of more science-based course units, although they may also choose a proportion of arts-based units. Suitably qualified students may also take course units in the other UCL science departments.
Syllabus for F400 and F402
Note: Each single course unit (1 unit) is equal to 15 credits in the European Credit Transfer Scheme
(ECTS), a half unit is 7.5 ECTS. This is a full programme of 4 units per year, equal to 60 ECTS.

Examiner: B. BARKER

PRE-REQUISITE(S)
RATIONALE:
General knowledge about the Pre-European past of the Australian continent is often ill-conceived or based on socio-cultural evolutionary stereotypes. This unit introduces students to the complexity and diversity of the Pre-European past, placing Aboriginal cultural adaptations among the most successful in human history. Fundamental to an understanding of Aboriginal culture is an awareness of its past. From an understanding of the human past through archaeology, students are in a position to assess the extraordinary achievements of Pre-European hunter-gatherers on the Australian continent.
SYNOPSIS:
This unit will address the major issues and examine the archaeological evidence relating to Australian "prehistoric" archaeology, including initial colonisation of the continent, environmental history, the pattern of Pleistocene adaptations and late Holocene Change. The unit will also address theoretical approaches as case studies and deal with the problems associated with the practice of archaeology as it relates to "living cultures". It is felt that this course will provide an essential background for those interested in pursuing an archaeology career as a sub-discipline within anthropology or for those with a general interest in Australia's human past.

Most chamber tombs were probably built during the 4th millennium B.C. , and the stone circles generally date somewhat later. Megalithic monuments may be divided into four categories: the chamber tomb, or dolmen ; the single standing stone, or menhir ; the stone row; and the stone circle. Chamber tombs were usually covered with earth mounds, forming a barrow . Menhirs sometimes stood alone near the entrance of a tomb or on top of the mound. Sometimes they were set in long rows called alignments, as at Carnac in Brittany; in other places they were arranged in a circle, the most elaborate of which is Stonehenge in England (these are known as cromlechs outside Britain). The individual stone slabs may reach 65 ft (20 m) in length and 100 tons (90 metric tons) in weight. Such massive structures testify to the engineering feats possible with the concerted efforts of relatively ill-equipped peoples. See G. Daniel
